Key Terms:
INFANCY NARRATIVES- stories in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke that relate Jesus’ birth and early life.
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION- the catholic doctrine that at the moment of her conception, Mary was preserved
from all sins, including original sin.
VIRGIN BIRTH- the catholic doctrine Mary conceived and gave birth to Jesus solely through the power of the
Holy Spirit.
ASSUMPTION- the catholic doctrine that Mary was assumed into heaven body and soul at the end of her life.
VISITATION- Mary visited her child-bearing cousin Elizabeth, the recognition of Jesus’ presence by his relatives,
Elizabeth and John.
ANNUNCIATION- Jesus’ conception within Mary.
MAGI- non-Jewish members of the priestly caste of Persians, serving as chaplains to and representative of the
royalty. The MAGI were known for their understanding of astrology and the occult. They appear in Matthew’s
infancy narrative.
INCARNATION- the official church teaching that God became fully human in Jesus.

1. DIVINE MOTHERHOOD PROCLAIMED AT COUNCIL OF EPHESUS 431
➢ Known as Mary, mother of God
➢ Greek term Theotokos of Birthgiver of God
➢ Further explained by the council of Chalcedon 451

2. PERPETUAL VIRGINITY
3. IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
➢ Declared by Pope Pius IX in his apostolic constitution “Ineffabilis Deus”
➢ December 8, 1854

4. THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY


➢ Proclaimed by Pope Pius XII on his “Encyclical Munisficentissimus Deus”
➢ November 1, 1950
Key Terms:
ELIZABETH & ZECHARIAH- both childless and old
MESSIAH- announcement made by angel Gabriel to Mary
MAGNIFICAT- song similar to Hannah’s song
PALESTINE- the land where Jesus lived , ISRAEL, the holy land promised land of Canaan was called Palestine
by greeks.
ISRAEL- name given by God to Patriarch Jacob. Also refers to the Political make-up of the jewish people during
the history. Divided into 12 tribes of Israel .
GALILEE- northern region of Palestine
SAMARIA- central region of Palestine ( a south of galilee)
À- people of samaria who were considered heretics.
JUDEA- southern region of Palestine , dry, barren and craggy land.
JERUSALEM- capital city of judea, the holy city
TORAH- the law, the first five books of the bible, the Pentateuch Temple was
PHARISEES- devout, largely middle-class jews who loved observances too much. Portray them as stressing
external of the Messiah. They believed in life after Death.
SADDUCEES- political leaders, mostly priests, did not accept the whole of the Old Testament, did not expect the
coming of messiah.
SCRIBES- the scholarly teachers among the Pharisees
SANHEDRIN- the Jewish traditional council
ZEALOTS- freedom fighters who sometimes used violence to overthrow Rome’s control.
ESSENES- men who usually lived in desert communities in order to live a pure life.
SHEMA- the main commandment of the Jewish people which was prayed daily Deut _6:4-5
SABBATH- Jewish day of rest
SYNAGOGUE- the local center of prayer
JESUS- a Galilean
NAZARETH- where jesus grew up, a small town
CAPERNAUM, CANA & BETHSAIDA- important places in galile, where jesus had his ministry.
CAPERNAUM- was a home base for jesus public ministry
SAMARITAN BELIEF- accepted the law of moses (torah)
SHRINE ON MOUNT GERIZIM- temple in Jerusalem as the center of jewish worship.
NORTHERN REGION MIDDLE REGION
GALILEE: upper and lower REJECTIONS: writings of the prophets and the
LAND: Northwest Agricultural Area wisdom writings
SOURCE OF WATER: Jordan River
OCCUPATION OF THE PEOPLE: farmers &

Key Terms:
METANOIA-a change of heart and lifestyle, repentance, conversion
PROPHET- Gods’s messenger , someone who could read the signs of the times, hears Gods’s word and proclaims
it.
JOHN THE BAPTIZER- the prophet, relative of jesus.

JOHN’S PREACHING:
1. Prepare the way of the Lord
2. Make a straight path for the lord
3. Repent
4. The day of the Lord is at hand

JOHN’S SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS: LK 3:10-14


1. Those who have should share with those who do not have.
2. Treat one another fairly.
3. Do not abuse your power.
4. Do not cheat of take bribes.

Key Terms:
MISSION- special work we are tasked to undertake
CHRIST- the anointed one, the messiah
PROPHETIC MISSION- proclaiming the truth in one’s life
KINGLY MISSION- serving others , the greatest powers
PRIESTLY MISSION- bringing people close to God
BAPTISM- the beginning of jesus public life, the acceptance of his mission
TEMPTATION- any person or thing that entices us to do wrong or to omit what is good, also known as an
INVITATION SIN
SIN- a refusal to love
VENIAL SIN- an offense that weakens our relationship with God
MORTAL SIN- a serios sin that destroys our friendship with God and causes us to lose grace and eternal life
ORIGINAL SIN- an inclination to sin and not a personal sin (selfishness, self-centeredness, pride)
WEALTH, POWER, HONOR- 3 Temptations in the desert symbolized.

A. TURNING STONES TO BREAD- about wealth ( easy and maximized )


B. JUMPING SO THE ANGEL OF GOD WILL CATCH JESUS- about power (desire of power)
C. WORSHIPING THE DEVIL- about prestige or honor
