History
The original game involved two teams of nine players each, who tried to throw
a soccer ball into peach baskets fixed at the opposite ends of a gymnasium. The
baskets were replaced by metal hoops and nets in 1893, and the dribbling was
introduced in 1896 .
The first professional basketball league was formed in 1898, and the first
national governing body, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), was established
in 1900. The National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded in 1946 as
the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and changed its name in 1949
after merging with the National Basketball League (NBL).
The NBA is the most popular and prestigious basketball league in the world,
consisting of thirty teams from the USA and Canada. The NBA’s regular season
runs from October to April, with each team playing eighty-two games. The
playoffs are a best-of-seven series format, and the winners of each conference
meet in the NBA Finals, which determine the league champion.
Equipment
Basketball is a sport that requires minimal equipment to play, but there are
several items that can improve performance, comfort, and training. Here is a list
of some of the essential basketball equipment:
Basketball Hoop: A hoop is a raised vertical rim with a net attached to it. It is
mounted on a backboard, which is a flat rectangular board made of transparent
glass or wood. The standard height of a basketball hoop is 10 feet above the
ground .
Carry: In basketball, a carry is a violation that occurs when a player lifts the
ball facing the sky and pauses dribbling for a while or places their hand
underneath the ball before continuing to dribble . This rule is to prevent players
from gaining an advantage by using their body to shield the ball from defenders.
Travel: a travel is a violation that occurs when a player moves illegally with the
ball. Specifically, a travel occurs when a player takes more than two steps
without dribbling the ball or moves their pivot foot before releasing the ball.
Moving screen: A moving screen is a type of illegal screen that occurs when the
screener moves their feet or body to block the defender . It is an offensive foul
and results in a change of possession.
