Exercise 1
Water Quality Standard for Agricultural Production
I. Theoretical Background
Water is not just a basic necessity for life, but it is also an essential resource in agriculture.
From irrigating crops to providing drinking water for livestock and poultry, water plays a crucial role in
ensuring a successful harvest and healthy animals. However, it's not just the quantity of water that
matters; its quality is equally important. Poor water quality can have a significant impact on crop
growth, animal health, and soil productivity. Contaminants such as bacteria, heavy metals, and
pesticides in water can affect the nutritional content of crops, reduce yields, and even cause diseases
in animals.
Some of the ways to improve the water quality includes: testing the water sources, treating
the water to remove contaminants, and implementing best management practices. By embracing
these measures, we can protect the health of the general public, increase productivity for agricultural
produce, and encourage the sustainable utilization of our invaluable water resources.
This exercise aims to determine the quality of water used for irrigation and other activities in
agricultural production. This is also aims to assess the water quality parameters relevant to crop
health and environmental sustainability.
Firstly, sample of water was acquired at Malacampa, Camiling, Tarlac. Dissolved Oxygen
(DO) meter and pH meter were used in identifying the DO and pH level of the water sample. The
instruments were prepared and calibrated first before usage. Then, the probe of the two instruments
were submerged into the water sample and when it stabilized, the data obtained were recorded. The
trial was done twice for the DO and five trials for the pH level.
IV. Results and Discussion
V. Lifelong Learning
Water quality is a crucial factor in increasing productivity for agricultural produce. The
water sample used for this exercise doesn’t meet the standard for DO level, however, passed in
terms of pH level. It is important to take into considerations these factors for future decision
making most importantly to ensure that the water we utilize is free from any harmful contaminants,
meet or pass the standards for both for the well-being of humans and animals.
