LISTENING PART 1 _ LISTENING ANSWER SCRIPTS

I. Topics

Exercise B _ Track 66
Scripts
1. [F-Au] Well, what did you think of that? Was it as good as all those reviews we read?
[M-Am] Hmm. I'm not so sure. The acting was good, and I liked the music, but the plot was
terrible. It made no sense at all.
[F-Au] Yeah, I agree. And the special effects weren't very impressive, were they? I mean, there
was no point making it in 3-D.

2. [F-Br] Oh, these look absolutely wonderful. And they smell amazing! Thank you. Where
should I put them?
[M-Au] How about over there by the window? Is there room on that table?
[F-Br] Yes, that's a good idea. I'll go and get a vase and put them in water.

3. [M-Cn] I don't see why you don't apply. It's a great opportunity, and the salary is good.
[F-Au] Yes, but it's not really a position I'm interested in. I worked in sales before, and it's too
stressful.
[M-Cn] I know what you mean, but there's no harm in sending in your resume, is there? At least
you'll get some interviewing practice, and they might have a different job you can do.
[F-Au] No. I don't want to worry all the time about meeting targets, and there's too much travel.
It's not for me.

4. [M-Am] OK, so that's one coach-fare ticket to Singapore. You 'll be staying at the Mandarin
Oriental for five nights, breakfast included.
[F-Cn] Great. And then the flight to Hong Kong is confirmed?
[M-Am] Yes. You leave on Friday, at ten o'clock, staying three nights, meals included, at the
Grand Hotel before heading back to New York.
[F-Cn] OK. That sounds fine. Do you want me to pay a deposit now?

5. [M-Am] Tina? I think there's something wrong with my monitor. I can 't see the cursor on the
screen, and it makes it impossible to get anything done.
[F-Au] Oh, that sounds serious. Have you tried turning it off and on again?
[M-Am] Yes, I've done that and the problem is still the same. I can't use it at all. I need to figure
this out quickly because I have some spreadsheets I need to print.
[F-Au] It might be the mouse, you know. Let's check the connections and see if that makes any
difference.

II. People
Exercise B _ Track 67
Scripts
1. [M-Cn] So, what seems to be the problem with Charlie?
[F-Am] Well, normally he runs around the house full of energy, but for the last few days he
hasn't really moved much at all. He seems to have no energy, and he's not eating his food.
[M-Cn] I see. Is he losing a lot of fur as well?
[F-Am] Yes, he is. It's all over the floor and furniture at home. We're really worried about him.

2. [F-Cn] Hello. I'd like to bring these back, please. I'm not sure if they're overdue.
[M-Au] OK. Let me see. Umm... yes, they are, I'm afraid. They should have been returned last
Friday. There's a charge of $8 on your account.
[F-Cn] Oh, I'm so sorry. I forgot all about them. I haven't even read them!
[M-Au] Well, I'm sorry. There's nothing I can do. We'll have to collect the fees for late returns.

3. [M-Br] OK, I think I've fixed that leak for you. One of the pipes under the sink had a small
hole in it, so I replaced it.
[F-Au] Great. Thanks for coming over so quickly. There was water all over the kitchen floor.
[M-Br] Happy to help. Just sign here at the bottom of this form. You have full coverage for this,
so there's no need to pay.
[F-Au] That's great. I'm really glad I took out that policy now!

4. [F-Cn) The regional manager will be here next week, for our annual review.
[M-Am] Yes, I know. I've prepared a schedule already. Do you think we should get all the shift
supervisors together at the end of this week to discuss it?
[F-Cn] It wouldn't hurt. We can meet in my office and I'll give them a brief overview of what's
planned. This will be my first annual review since I took over running this store, so I want to
make sure things go well.
[M-Am] I'm sure it will all be fine.

5. [M-Br] Excuse me. Do you think I could have another orange juice, please?
[F-Cn] Yes, of course. Can I ask you to keep your seat belt fastened while you're sitting down? It
can get a little bumpy if we hit any turbulence.
[M-Br] Oh, OK. Sorry. I didn't realize I left it off. I've been feeling a little airsick, actually.
[F-Cn] Well, we should be landing in around a half hour. I'll get you your drink now.

Exercise B _ Track 68

Scripts
1. [M-Au] Hi, Susan. How did it go last week? Were there many people there?
[F-Am) Yes, it was packed the whole time. There must have been over 3,000 visitors. Our booth
was right in the center of the main hall, so the location couldn't have been better.
[M-Au] Great. Did you get any new orders?
[F-Am] A couple of good contacts, which I need to follow up on, but no firm orders yet.

2. [M-Am] There's still no sign of it. It should be here by now.

[F-Cn] I know. It's usually on time, isn't it? I guess the traffic is bad today.
[M-Am] Well, I hope it arrives soon. We've been standing here for 20 minutes in the cold. I bet
when it comes there are no seats left.
[F-Cn] I only need to go three stops. If it doesn't come soon, I think I'll walk.

3. [F-Br] Have you had any feedback about how your interview went?
[M-Am] No. It's been three weeks now and I haven't heard a thing. I was wondering about
contacting them, but I don't want to seem too desperate.
[F-Br] Well, maybe it's worth just giving them a call. I mean, it won't do any harm, will it?
[M-Am] I guess not. And all this uncertainty is making me stressed out.

4. [M-Cn] I don't know why, but my neck's still really stiff. It hurts when I move it. Look. I can't
turn it very far to the left, or the right. Ouch.
[F-Au] Hmm. It's been a problem for a couple of weeks now, hasn't it? If it isn't getting any
better, why don't you go ask Dr. Gerringer? Maybe she'll give you some painkillers or
something.
[M-Cn] There's no point in going to her. This is a sports injury. She won 't know what to do.
5. [F-Cn] Here's my key. Room 314. I'd like to check out, please.
[M-Br] Certainly, ma'am. Was everything to your satisfaction?
[F-Cn] Yes, it was fine, thanks. The room was a little too warm overnight, though, and I couldn't
open the window. The air-conditioning controls don't work.
[M-Br] Oh, I'm sorry about that. The windows don't open, I'm afraid, as the building is
completely sealed to control the temperature. I'm sorry you were too warm. I'll pass that message
about the controls on to the maintenance manager. Thank you for mentioning it.

IV. Locations

Exercise B _ Track 69

Scripts
1. [F-Cn] So you want a compact four-door, that's for two weeks, with full insurance?
[M-Am) Yes, that's right. And unlimited mileage. I'd like to drop it off at Los Angeles airport.
[F-Cn] No problem. Just make sure you keep all your documents with you to hand in when you
get there. OK, so with the child safety seat as extra, and all taxes, that comes to $812. How
would you like to pay?

2. [M-Cn] This place is huge. We've been here all morning and we've only seen the ground floor.
[F-Am] Yeah, I know. It's amazing. I want to go to the special exhibit on China next. They have
a collection of ancient paintings there from the Tang dynasty.
[M-Cn] Sounds good. But after that we really have to go, or we'll miss the bus back.
[F-Am) OK. I want to stop at the gift shop on the way out, though, to get a few postcards as
souvenirs.

3. [M-Au] OK. I'm off now. Is there anything you want me to get on my way home?
[F-Cn] No, that's all right. We don't need anything from the store.
[M-Au] It's the last game of the season, so I might be late getting back. It'll probably be packed.
[F-Cn] Don't worry. You just enjoy the game. I hope they win for a change!

4. [F-Au] And here are your tickets. The seat numbers are printed on the side, right there. It can
take time to make your way to your seats, so make sure you arrive well in advance.
[M-Br] Oh, OK. Thanks. K25 and 26. Where are they?
[F-Au] If you look at this seating plan, you can see you'll be sitting about halfway in this row
here in the middle. You should have a great view of the stage, and you 'll be able to hear the
orchestra perfectly from there.
[M-Br] That's great. Thank you.

5. [F-Am] How did the visit to the supplier go?

[M-Cn] It went really well. They showed me around the design studio, and their production
facilities. It's a big place. They gave me some samples of the new fabrics they're working on, too,
and I got their latest catalog.
[F-Am] Well, if they can give us the same discount as last year, then I think we might put their
new summer line in the window.
[M-Cn) Good idea. The customers seem to like their styles a lot, so it should help us draw more
people in.

V. TIMES, REASONS & FEELINGS

Exercise B _ Track 71

Scripts
1. [M-Cn] Don't forget Mr. Bartelles will be here after lunch. We have a meeting scheduled for
two o'clock in the boardroom. All the department heads have to be there.
[F-Br] OK. I won't forget. I have an important supplier coming at three, though. Do you think
we'll be done by then?
[M-Cn] I doubt it. His memo said we should allow two hours. Why don't you call your supplier
and reschedule, if it's not too late? Maybe say five o'clock, to be safe?
[F-Br] I can try, I suppose. But I don't think he'll be happy.

2. [F-Am] I haven't heard anything from Hannah Wilson yet about next year 's ad campaign. Has
she been in touch with you at all?
[F-Cn] No, I haven't heard from her. It's becoming a problem, actually. I mean, we can't really
sign off on our television and print ads until we hear from her, can we? Maybe I should give her
a call.
[F-Am] No, I'll do it. I don't know what's taking her so long. I hope there's nothing wrong.
[F-Cn] Hmm. The last thing we need right now is another round of advertising reviews.

3. [M-Am] So you 're saying that I've lost almost seven pounds in the last two months!
[F-Cn] That's right. It's all down to the new diet and exercise program that you started when you
came here. It was designed to help you lose weight quickly, and that's what you 've done.
[M-Am] Well, I'm happy about that. If I keep this up, I should be a lot fitter and healthier by the
summer.
[F-Cn] Let's hope so. That's when you 'll have your annual health check. You still have a long
way to go, but it's a promising start.

4. [M-Cn] Why is it still so cold in here? I turned up the heat ages ago, but it's no warmer. My
hands are freezing. I guess the heat isn't working. Or it might just be the thermostat.
[M-Cn] Well, whatever it is, it needs to be fixed. This is ridiculous. They can't expect us to work
like this. Have you called Mr. Bashir in maintenance?
[F-Br] I tried a while back but the line was busy.

5. [F-Au] I just got an e-mail from Julia.

[M-Am] Oh, yes. How is she? Did she say when she's coming back?
[F-Au] Apparently the doctor still doesn't think she's well enough to return. He gave her another
two weeks off.
[M-Am] Two more weeks! That means she'll be out for six weeks total before she comes back...
assuming she comes back then. I don't know how we're going to manage.

VI. Requests/Offers, Advice, and Opinions

Exercise B _ Track 73

Scripts
1. [F-Am] Hello, Mr. Kobayashi. It's Alana Gibson here from Supplies Direct. This is just a
courtesy call because we're reviewing your account with us today. Do you think you need to
order any office supplies?
[M-Cn) Oh, right. Well, we could use some more printer paper and ink cartridges, but your
prices are a little high, if I remember correctly.
[F-Am] Well, I can give you a 15 percent discount if you place an order today.
[M-Cn) That sounds good. OK, let me think about it and I'll get back to you.

2. [M-Am) What do you think of the new storage unit? Have you seen it yet?
[F-Au] Yes, I went there yesterday to pick up some stock. It's very large. Are you sure it's worth
the price?
[M-Am) We got a bargain. They reduced the monthly rent by 30 percent.
[F-Au] I know, but we had to sign a five-year lease, and it's still double what we were paying
before.

3. [F-Am] So how do you like your new office, Brian? It's a lot larger than the one in the old
building.
[M-Br] Yes, it is. It's a little darker, though. I mean, I need the lights on all day here, or I can 't
see properly.
[F-Am] Well, why don't you move your desk over by the window? That might help.
[M-Br) Yes, I could do that, I guess. It's a shame there aren't more windows.

4. [F-Cn] So, are you going to take that job or not, Danny? You 've been thinking about it for a
week now, and they need a decision.
[M-Au) I still haven't decided. It's an interesting opportunity and the pay is good, but it's not
really what I'm used to. To be honest, I don't feel confident I can do it.
[F-Cn] I'm sure you'll be fine. They'll give you all the training you need. You did say you wanted
to try something different, remember?
[M-Au] Yes, yes. I know. I think I'll ask for another day or so to make up my mind.

5. [F-Am] That was a good presentation, don't you think?

[M-Am] Well, the beginning was a bit slow but he eventually made quite a lot of good points.
[F-Am] Hmm. I thought the case study about that marketing company was very practical. Look
at all these notes I took.
[M-Am) Wow. I took a lot too, actually. There was a lot of information there that I might be able
to work in to my current project.

exercise means a healthier and longer life.

2. [M-Cn] I'd like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to everyone for all your hard
work over the last year. Without your efforts, we would not have won the Best Conference

yourselves.

You’re hungry, but you don’t feel like going out. Unfortunately, your favorite
restaurant doesn’t deliver. Don’t worry, just call Waiters on Wheels, and we’ll
bring your favorite food directly to your house or apartment. We serve all
sections of town, and we’ll go to any restaurant you like, all for a very reasonable
delivery fee. Can’t decide what you feel like eating? Visit our website and you’ll
see menus from almost every restaurant in the city.

Good afternoon, this is Eliza Hinson, your WBOM weather forecaster. In most
parts of the city, there’s over ten inches of snow right now, and there will
probably be 18 inches before this storm clears out tomorrow morning. Tonight,
it will get much colder and the winds will become stronger. The roads will be
very bad and very dangerous. If you don’t have to go out tonight, stay home. If
you do have to go out, be very, very careful.
3.
Now, before we close the meeting, I’d like to take this opportunity to say
goodbye and good luck to Derrick Wheeler. Today is Derrick’s last day at
Fairfield Communications. As everyone who has talked to Derrick knows, he
comes from Australia. However, you may not know that he attended university
in Ireland and the U.K. before moving to the U.S. about 20 years ago. Derrick
worked in banking and in software before he went to work for our competitor,
Global Communications. When Global merged with Fairfield, Derrick came to
work for us, and soon became vice-president of marketing.

Attention, all members and guests of Crystal Springs Athletic Club. The
management regrets to announce that the indoor swimming pool will be closed
for two weeks for repair, cleaning, and painting. All other facilities at the club—
the outdoor pool, the workout room, the tennis and squash courts, the snack
bar—will remain open. The management of Crystal Springs is sorry for any
inconvenience this may cause you.

Good afternoon, this is Sylvia Vickers with another hour of “Travelers’ Tales,”
the radio program that brings you the world. Today, I’m going to start our
program with a review of a new travel book, Paris on the Cheap. This is a book
for travelers on very tight budgets. It’s a well-written book, full of interesting
ideas. My only complaint, in fact, is that there is too much information on cheap
places to eat and not enough about cheap places to stay. Almost half the book is
about restaurants, but there are only ten pages about reasonably priced hotels.

Hello, this is Lawrence Talbot of Talbot Commercial Insurance Associates. I will
be visiting out-of-town clients on Wednesday and Thursday, and will not be
back in my office until Friday. I will be checking my voice mail as often as
possible. In case of an emergency, call my assistant at (303) 555-1451, and she
can reach me on my cell phone. Thanks!

I’ve called this meeting to talk about our new evaluation system. First, a little
background: From the time this company opened 12 years ago, we’ve used
annual job evaluations. For years, workers and managers were evaluated only
by their supervisors or, in the case of the factory workers, their foremen. Then,
two years ago, we started to use the peer evaluation system. In this system, you
are evaluated by someone at the same job level as you. This year, we are going
with what is called 360-degree evaluations, where you are evaluated by your
supervisors and by your peers.

Thank you for calling Health Line. Health Line is a free automated system
providing you with information about health and medicine. The topic you chose
was sore throats. Most sore throats are caused by viruses. However, some sore
throats are caused by bacteria. This condition is called strep throat. If you have
a sore throat and a fever, but not a cough, and if there are white spots on the
back of your throat, then you may have strep throat. You should see a doctor,
who can do a simple test to see if you really do have strep throat.
PART 2 ‐ Questions 9‐20
Questions 9 to 12. Listen to a radio programme.
Ben: Hello and welcome to ‘Future Shop’, the radio programme where we look at the
gadgets of the future! We have a few different gadgets to look at today, don’t
we, Lisa?
Lisa: Yes, we do, Ben! Let’s look at these headphones first of all. We'll all have
headphones like these in the future! You probably have headphones for listening
to music and playing computer games, don’t you?
Ben: Yes, that’s right. I do.
Lisa: Do you think you maybe play your music a little too loud?
Ben: Yes, sometimes. That’s true.
Lisa: Well these very special headphones are for you, Ben. If you’re playing your music
too loudly, they automatically turn down the volume. Ear doctors across the
world will love these headphones!
Ben: Amazing! Now, what about this wonderful fridge?
Lisa: It doesn’t look anything special to me.
Ben: Well, let me tell you that these fridges are going to be in every house in the year
3000. The fridge remembers all your favourite foods: milk, chocolate, cheese,
whatever. Then when your fridge is getting empty it plays some music and a red
light comes on with a picture of the thing you need!
Lisa: Wow! I want one of these fridges!
Ben: Well Lisa, you can’t have one now, I’m afraid. They won’t be in the shops for
another few years!
Lisa: Aw! Well, take a look at this 3D TV.
Ben: Where’s the plug?
Lisa: It doesn’t have one! You don’t need to plug it in. It also makes special smells, so
if you’re watching a TV programme about cooking you’ll smell the food too!
Ben: I like that idea! It’s making me feel hungry just thinking about it. Well, our next
gadget is this very special dishwasher.
Lisa: Hm . . . What’s this on the front?
Ben: It’s a television screen. While you wash your dishes, you can watch all of your
favourite programmes too!
Lisa: I don’t think that’s a very good idea! Who wants to stand up and watch the TV?
That won’t sell very well. I prefer this microwave. I’m going to buy this as soon as
it gets to the shops. It plays music when your food is ready.
Ben: Now, that does sound like a good buy. I think I’ll get one too – do you know how
much it costs?

Questions 13 to 16. Listen to a conversation between a student and a university

employee.
M: Hi, do you need any assistance?
W: Hi! Yes, is this where I buy tickets for tonight’s jazz concert?
M: Yes, you can get them here, at the student center, or at the auditorium. How
many tickets do you need?
W: I need to buy one for myself and one for a friend.
M: OK, can I see your student ID?
W: Here it is.
M: That’s fine and is your friend a student here?
W: No, he’s not. Are the tickets different prices?
M: Yes, the tickets are different prices. The non‐student ticket is five dollars more
than the student ticket because students that go to this university get a discount.
W: Hmm, so how much are they?
M: The student ticket is ten dollars and the non‐student ticket is fifteen dollars. Do
you still want them?
W: Oh, that’s OK. Yeah, I’ll still take the tickets.
M: Great. The total for two tickets is twenty‐five dollars. We don’t have the tickets
here, but you can collect them at the auditorium.
W: Great, thanks. Oh, where is the auditorium?
M: It’s the building next to the recreation office, and it starts at 7 p.m., so you should
be there by 6:15 to collect your tickets and get a good seat.
W: Thanks so much for your help.
M: No problem. Here is your receipt. You need to show them this receipt to collect
the tickets. Also, make sure to take your ID. They will want to verify the name on
the tickets with your student ID.

Questions 17 to 20. Listen to a conversation on campus.

W: Hey, Dave. I was told you are going to be moving out of the dorm this week.
M: Yes, I am. I was going to come and talk to you. Since you’re the RA, I am hoping you
can answer a question for me.
W: Sure, what’s your question?
M: Will I get any kind of refund from my housing payment since I am leaving early?
W: I presume you will only get a partial refund. I think you would have received a full
refund if you made this decision within three weeks of orientation.
M: I guess a partial refund is better than no refund. Where do I go?
W: That is true. Apparently, you can collect refunds from the Accommodation Office,
so go there first. But let me know if you have any problems.
M: Great, thanks.
W: Why are you moving?
M: Well, I don’t feel like dorm life is for me; I think I made a mistake moving into the
dorms. I found having three roommates a burden. I am moving in with my
brother. He has moved a few blocks from the school.
W: I understand. It is hard to live with three people. One roommate is much better.
You will also save money. Although, I don’t know if I could live with my brother!
M: Ha ha! Well we get along really well, so I am looking forward to living with him.
W: That’s good! When do you plan to move all your stuff out?
M: I should have all my stuff out by Friday.
PART 3 ‐ Questions 21‐35
Questions 21 to 25. Listen to part of a talk about Greenpeace.
Hello everyone. Today’s session is the second of our lectures focusing on the
environment. This week we're looking at Greenpeace, one of the leading international
groups working for the environment. A key area of Greenpeace’s work is climate
change. Stop and think for a moment ‐ think of all the different things you do that might
impact on the climate ‐ for example, you might drive a car every day, or use a lot of
electricity ... this is only part of the overall impact. Now think of all the different things
companies and governments do that have an effect on the environment.
Greenpeace works hard to influence the impact that the public, companies and
governments have on the climate. It organizes its work in five main ways. Greenpeace
focuses on key places in the world and works towards protecting these. They conduct
a number of investigations that highlight a problem. At present, there are two main
areas that are being investigated because of climate change. The first is the Arctic and
Antarctic, where Greenpeace is focusing on rising sea levels, pollution levels and global
warming. The second is rainforests ‐ Greenpeace is looking at a number of rainforests
around the world and considering the impact of deforestation in places such as
Indonesia and Brazil. They are examining issues such as the destruction of biodiversity
and culture, and the wider impact that deforestation is having on the planet.
Greenpeace does a lot of other work in areas such
as ...
Questions 26 to 30. Listen to the lecture about a jazz musician.
W: Who built the pyramids? Historians used to think that slaves were forced to. But it's
not true. Researchers have been studying the areas around these ancient structures.
They are looking at the cities that formed while they were being built.
For example, the food the builders ate shows us they were not slaves. Historians have
found bakeries where bread was made to feed the workers. They have also found
bones of the meal they ate. It seems that the builders ate quite well. Only the best
meat for them! But, slaves are not usually fed high quality food.
Furthermore, it seems that there were different types of workers. Some were highly
skilled and stayed in the cities all year. Others worked for only short lengths of time.
And guess what time of year they chose? Yes, the summer! Not because it was warm,
but because that is when the Nile flooded. These workers, we can guess, were farmers.
They couldn't work the fields when they were flooded. So they came in to help build
the pyramids tor. . . maybe some money. Of course, we don't really know if they were
paid. They may have been told they had to help. But that's not really the same as
slavery. Or, they may have wanted to help. Maybe they felt loyal to the pharaoh. We
don't really know. But, it seems that they were not forced to. Nor were they treated
badly.
Another piece of evidence is graffiti. That tells us a lot about the social structure. The
graffiti found does not support the idea that they were slaves. Rather, it shows groups
of workers who were committed to their work.

Questions 31 to 35. Listen to a lecture in a psychology class.

We’re talking today about motivation, specifically about internal and external
motivation. Let's start with definitions. Okay, so who can tell me what motivation
P
is?
:
Motivation is? Well, it's, it's… what makes you want to do something?
Simply put, yes, that's right. Motivation stimulates behavior. It’s what induces us
S
:
P
:
to behave, act in certain ways. Motivation can be described as either internal or
external, internal motivation is as the term implies, motivation that comes from
the inside. A person is motivated to do something some task or activity, because
she finds the activity itself rewarding. She doesn't rely on any outside source to
make her want to do it. When internal motivation is an operation, a person has
good feelings about the activity, a sense of achievement or of self‐satisfaction.
External motivation, on the other hand, is motivation that comes from the
outside a reward, let’s say, bestowed by another person. The reward can take
different forms. Can anyone give me any examples? In a classroom? If the teacher
gives the kids stars or stickers or something like that for good behavior, that
would be external motivation. There are a lot of forms of external motivation in
the classroom, giving kids extra time at recess. That’s another example. Yes,
certainly. What about grades? Would you say that the grades a teacher gives
constitute external motivation?
Oh, yes, sure, grades are a really important type of external motivation, especially
for older kids.
P: Okay, so there are lots of ways external motivation can be used in the classroom
and in the workplace as well. Sometimes it's very effective, but it has its
drawbacks as well. There were some interesting studies done on this in the 1970s.
Quite a while ago now. And although other researchers tried to disprove the
results, they the results that is, were later backed up by further analysis and
research. Okay, so essentially what these researchers found was that external
rewards can have the result of weakening internal motivation. In one study,
children were asked to do puzzles, some were rewarded with money, while
others received no external reward. Then the researchers stopped giving the
reward and looked at whether the children's behavior would change. They found
that the children who had received money were no longer interested in the
puzzles. Once they saw they wouldn't be rewarded. The other children, the ones
who had received no reward still showed interest in the puzzles, their motivation
to do the puzzles was internal. Another study worked with children drawing
pictures. The children were divided into three groups. The children in all three
groups were asked to draw pictures. One group was told they would get a
certificate for drawing the pictures. The second group was told nothing to make
them expect a reward, but they were given certificates after having drawn some
pictures. The third group drew pictures with no certificates or any other type of
reward. Then the researchers observed the children at a later time, they saw that
the children in the first group weren't as interested in drawing pictures. As they'd
been before the experiment began. They learned to expect a reward, and when
one was no longer offered, they were no longer interested in the activity. The
children in the other two groups, the ones who had drawn pictures without
expecting to be rewarded, were just as interested as ever in drawing, their
motivation hadn't been affected. But for the children in the first group, the offer
of a reward the external motivation had later led them to lose their internal
motivation. So, these studies are very telling and fundamental really, to
understanding how internal and external motivation work.

Questions 9-12:
M: Hi, Professor Smith. Do you have a few minutes?
W: Sure. How can I help?
M; I want to know how to write a good essay.
W: I see. What exactly is the problem?
M: Well, Fm not sure. I mean I take many notes, and I understand the lessons. It’s just that my
essays aren’t very good.
W: Ah, yes. A good essay needs organization. Let’s go over the format for an essay.
M: That ’d be great.
W: So there are the three parts to an essay. First, there's the introduction. You need a strong
introduction. This gives the main idea for your whole essay. OK?
M: That makes sense.
- W: Next, there are the body paragraphs. They provide evidence or details for your main idea.
M: OK. [Slowly] I think I should write this down.
W: Yes; that is a good idea.
M: OK [Quickly] Can you tell me about body paragraphs again?
W: Sure. The body paragraphs provide evidence or details.
MrAhhh right.
W: And then there's your conclusion. The conclusion is just a summary of your main idea.
M: Wow! I've never thought of it that way.
W; Yes, it can make a big difference. Good organization is important for essay writing.
Questions 13-16:
M: Hi. Are you in charge of the Student Tutoring Center?
W: No, but I do tutor here.
M: Well, I need help with my mathematics class work. Can you help me?
W: That's fine. I'm actually a math major. lean help you. But, before we begin, I need to clarify
the rules.
M: Rules? What rules?
W: Well, there are some things I can help you with, and some things I can't help you with. Let me
explain.
M: OK.
W: First of all, our school has rules about cheating. It's pretty standardfor schools nowadays.
Anyway, according to the rules, if you cheat, then you can get kicked out of school
M: That makes sense. I don ’t want them to punish either one of us because of tutoring.
W: Exactly. OK, so I can help you with things like learning strategies for studying, and studying
from your notes. I can even help you take notes. However, when it comes to class work and
homework, you’re on your own. Are we all clear?
M: I think that’s fair.
W: Good. OK, let’s get started.
Questions 17-20:
M: Hi. Can I help you with anything?
W: Hi, Professor. Well, it's about our project that’s due next week. I was wondering if I could
get an extension. Can I get an extra week to do it?
M: Why are you asking?
W: I normally wouldn ’t, but I’ve been really sick and I was absent for a few of your lectures.
M: Well, I’m sorry but I can’t give you an extension. However, I can suggest a couple of ways to
make up for lost time.
W: I hope so. I really need a good grade or I could lose my scholarship. Then I wouldn’t be able
to pay my tuition.
M: You ’ll be fine. Here’s what you can do: borrow one of your classmate’s notes from the
lectures that you missed. Ask if he or she can help explain them to you.
W: OK.
M: Or you can go to the library and do the research yourself. I can give you an outline of the
lectures that you missed. You can look up the main information. Either way, you should be fine.
W: Yeah, I guess you’re right. I should get started. Thanks.

Questions 21-25:
M: So I really appreciate your talking with me about this.
W: Well, I was concerned\ Generally I think students should get a grade based on your overall
work-but I could see that you didn't do as well on the last test... and you had done very well on
the first two exams.
M: I know. I was right in the middle of moving out of my dorm at the end of the semester and
that was my last exam. Normally, I wouldn't ask to take an incomplete, but I just didn't feel that a
lower grade really represented my work.
W: I agree. But, again, I don't usually like to do change-of grade forms.
M: OK. I understand
W: So ... well, I was thinking. Perhaps if you want to do an extra credit project ... Let's say,
something that will help you pull your grade back up to an A minus?
M: I can do that Look... it's so important that I maintain very good grades. My financial aid
package requires that I do...
W: I can understand that.
M: So what should Ido?
W: OK, here's the deal: You write a five-page paper on Shakespeare's worst play-and I mean,
you have to read all of them to decide what his worst play was. And tell me why you think so.
M: Uh, wow... that's...
W: You want to get that change of grade, right?
M: Right, yeah. Of course.
W: Fine, so you'll have two weeks to write this paper shouldn't take you too long if you have
done your reading.
M: Oh, I have. I've redd all the plays. And I think I know which one I'm going to choose.
W: Fine. Don't tell me... surprise me.
M: I will. So, what happens if I do a goodjob on the paper?
W: Then I will fill out the forms for a change of grade. It takes a few weeks after that, but the
new grade should go on your transcript afterwards.
M: OK... I guess I will have to go to the library over semester break... thanks for your
understanding.
Questions 26-30:
IW: Hi: 1 really need your help. Tve got to prepare for a presentation and I haven ft got a clue
about how to do a visual slide show...
M: Well, thafs why wefre here. We have tutors who know all the word-processing and
presentation programs. Uh, do you know what presentation viewer program you want to use?
W: I have no idea. Which is best?
M: That depends on what you want to do. Is your presentation just text or do you want to use
visuals with all the bells and whistles?
W: Um, you mean like images and graphics, and things that move around on the screen?
M: Exactly. You can include sounds or video too... .
W: Yes, absolutely ... the better it looks, the better I hope my grade will be.
M: Oh I think it is important that a presentation looks good-but you have to have the substance
too.
W: I guess so... uh...
M: You know what I mean ...ifyou have a good foundation for your presentation, you'll be fine.
W: Oh, right.
M: Anyway, I would advise you to use this presentation viewer program because ifs pretty
intuitive-you can figure it out as you go along.
W: Tve never really tried it.
M: After your tutorial, I think you'll find it is pretty simple. Speaking of which, uh, when do you
want to schedule your tutoring session?
W: As soon as possible! My presentation is next week and I'm nervous about speaking in front of
other people anyway. It would be bad if I had no time to practice using the program.
M: That's true. So ... then, how about tomorrow at 2 p.m.? Bring your outline.
W: Great. Ill do that. Can I bring my laptop with me?
M: Sure... see you then.
Questions 31-35:
With unemployment rampant in the economic depression of the 1930s, the government
established a program to put people to work. It was called the Works Progress Administration,
or WPA. The WPA funded the construction and maintenance of schools, parks and highways. A
small subdivision of the WPA, uh the Federal Arts Project, or FAP, was dedicated to employing
artists. The reasoning behind the FAP was that the arts, as much as schools and bridges,
contributed to the public welfare. And of course artists at the time of the Depression were
extremely vulnerable. Photographers were uniquely suited to the requirements of the FAP, not
least because much of their work constituted documenting the achievements of the WPA. -But
documentation in the larger sense of capturing the reality of an entire country was the mission of
many of the FAP photographers. One of the photographers funded by the FAP beginning in
1935 was Berenice Abbott. It was perfect timing for Berenice Abbott-she'd been photographing
New York City since her return from Paris in 1929. Long before the FAP came into being, her
stated purpose was to document and interpret America with love, but without sentimentality. And
she felt that New York represented the essence of the changing nature of American society. I
want to just go back to that word, sentimentality. Because it relates to how we can define
Abbott's approach to her art. As we talked about last week, photography in its initial stages had
been used in a very painterly fashion. People like Abbott realized early on that photography's
strengths had not been recognized or utilized. Abbott and her contemporaries rebelled against
the widespread painterly use of soft focus-in favor of the sharpness and clarity naturally
inherent in photography. And they also rejected the sentimentality of typical pastoral scenes and
landscapes in favor of a realistic depiction of fast-paced, modem urban life. It was this
sensibility that she brought with her to New York from Paris, where she had been living for eight
years. Abbott's project was, simply put, to photograph New York City. She called her project
ff
Changing New York." And the way she approached this project was to try to depict, through
photography, the uh, interaction between human beings and solid architectural constructs. Or
something like that ...I don't have the exact quote. See, she was trying to find a balance between
buildings and activity. So she decided to use more than just a hand-held camera... which was
perfect for, you know, capturing the hustle and bustle of the city, but would not have done justice
to the giant buildings that also define the city. At the same time, she didn't want to just
overshadow everything with those buildings. So she began to use a large format camera. One of
those rather bulky cameras you have to put on a tripod and then you have to view the image
under a black hood... difficult to carry around, but it widened her vision. It allowed her to
capture the size of massive modem buildings and also to juxtapose them in a shot with older,
humbler ones. And to keep the life in her shots she would often wait until someone passed by and
make sure they were in the frame. Or she would ask people to walk through or stand in the
frame. So, she ended up using the large view camera for most of the work. Well, this "Changing
New York" collection of 305 photographs is really a remarkable achievement. Its images are so
powerful that Abbott is considered by many to be one of the twentieth century's greatest
photographers. In fact, one more contemporary photographer- Douglas Levere-was so inspired
by her work that in the 1990s he decided to re-photograph Abbott's New York photos. Imagine
this: Levere went to the same locations, on the same day and same time with the identical
camera that Abbott had used. He reframed Abbott's shots as exactly as possible. Why would
someone do that? I have to admit; when I first heard about this 1 was skeptical of one artist
copying another so completely. But then I saw the photographs. And the amazing thing about
them is that if you put them side by side with Abbott's, you see that they are a logical extension of
her work. They take you even deeper into the contrast between the old and the new that Abbott
so expertly revealed in the 1930s.
