Leave Salary Calculation in Qatar
Leave Salary Calculation in Qatar
High salaries are one of the major attractions of working in Qatar! Net income in Qatar is usually higher than in
western nations due to the lack of taxation. In the past, remuneration packages were divided into various
elements like basic salary, car allowance, housing allowance, medical cover, children education and air tickets for
home visits. Today, a total salary is paid to cover all these expenses along with other bonuses too.
Here’s a run-through from qatarloving.com on Leave salary calculation in Qatar. Read on at your own pace...
Some of the common benefits that companies offer to employees in Qatar are:
Indemnity
Contract workers are awarded an 'indemnity' at the end of the contract period apart from their salary. On the
basis of basic salary (excluding bonuses) the indemnity is calculated. For people working in Qatar for a long
period, indemnity can be quite high. The indemnity is more of an end-of-the-term bonus & not related to
insurance. Qatar labour laws make it mandatory that expatriate workers need to be paid thanking them for
serving the state. Indemnity is also known as ‘end-of-contract benefits’ or ‘end-of-service’ benefits. The indemnity
scales are for the first three years in the range 15 to 20 days of basic pay per year of employment, and thereafter a
month’s pay every year.
Leave
Generally, after one year of continuous service, an employee is eligible for an annual paid leave of at least three
weeks. If the service is less than five years, and at least four weeks if the service is more than five years.
Annual leave date is usually fixed by the employer as per the work requirements. He may divide the leave with the
consent of the worker, provided, it should not be divided for more than two periods. In case the employee
submits a written application to postpone the annual leave, it can be postponed to next year. But, it is necessary
that it should not be more than half of the annual leave.
The worker is not allowed to waive his entitlement to the annual leave, and any agreement done on the contrary
would be considered as void. In case the contract is terminated before the worker claims his leave, some
companies may offer compensation in lieu of annual leave of the employee, equivalent to the wage of the
employee for the leave days for which he is entitled.
Sick leave
Paid sick leave is given to employees for every year of their service, but the leave can be availed only on
completion of three months in service, and on producing a medical certificate. If the sick leave does not exceed
two weeks, the employee shall be paid full wages and half his wage for another four weeks if it extends further.
Thereafter, the sick leave can be extended without pay till he resumes his work/resigns/service is terminated for
health reasons.
The employee’s work may be terminated at the end of the twelfth week of sick leave. This is done if a report is
issued by the physician that the worker cannot resume his work.
Pilgrimage leave
For once during the period of his service a Muslim worker is eligible to take leave without pay, not exceeding two
weeks. The pilgrimage leave is given to fulfil his obligation to go for pilgrimage only as & when the work
circumstances permit. Based on the work requirements & priority given to long-time employees, the employer will
specify the number of workers for pilgrimage leave.
Others
In Qatar, you will be offered leave for public holidays like Eid Al Fitr, Eid Al Adha, Independence Day, National
Sports Day and other festive days. The leaves are given as specified by the employer apart from annual leave.
Female employees can avail maternity leave (50 days) on completion of one year of service.
The Article 79 of the Labour Law in Qatar states that, a worker who has completed one continuous year in the
service of the employer shall be eligible for an annual leave with pay. The wage of the worker during the annual
leave shall be calculated on the basis of his basic wage on the date of entitlement.
Before commencement of the annual leave, the employer shall pay the wages to which the worker is entitled for
the work he has performed and the leave salaries to which the worker is entitled before starting the leave. For the
worker with service less than five years the leave shall not be less than three weeks and for the worker whose
service is more than five years it is four weeks.
Gratuity and Leave Salary
The end of service gratuity is paid to the worker who has completed employment of one year or more. This
gratuity shall be agreed upon by the two parties initially. It should not be less than a three-week wage for every
year of employment. The worker shall be eligible to gratuity for the fractions of the year in proportion to the
duration of employment.
