Assignment

Question one: Characteristics of a good supervision

Abstract

Education is very crucial to the attainment of national development. This opinion


necessitated this opinion to examine the characteristics of a good supervision.
Appropriate evaluations techniques determine extend of achieving the objectives
or goals effectively in a school environment. We shall therefore look at the
characteristics of good supervision in the subsequent paragraphs.

Introduction

Supervision focuses on sharing and enhancing knowledge and skills to support


professional development and improving service delivery. Supervision is regular
and based on the needs of the individual in case of needs. Supervision however is
about assisting the teachers and also the learners to recognize and implement
their capacity in their respective fields of work. Looking at the definitions of
supervision, Walls defines supervision as “assistance provided for the
advancement of a better teaching and learning circumstances”. According to Bigs
and Justman, “supervision is a means to coordinate, stimulate and direct the
growth of teachers in the power to stimulate and direct the growth of every
individual pupil through the exercise of his talents toward the richest and most
intelligent participation in the civilization in which he lives”.

Supervision does not imply inquiring or finding fault in a performance, it is a


method of providing guidance, support and exchanging of ideas with all the
people involved in the process of teaching and learning.

The concept of supervision

Supervision is a way of advising, guiding, refreshing, encouraging, stimulating,


improving and over seeing their cooperation in order for the supervisor to be
successful in their tasks or supervision. Ogunu(1998:128) again defines
supervision as the art of overseeing the activities of teachers and other
educational workers in a school system to ensure that they conformed with
generally accepted principles and practice of education and the stipulated policies
and guidelines of education authority which controls the system of education and
providing professional guidance to them (school personnel) to improve the
conditions which affects the learning and growth of students and teachers. Igwe
(2001) states that to supervised means to direct, oversee, guide or to make sure
that expected standards are made. Thus, supervision in the school means that the
laid down rules, regulations, principles are followed to maintain the minimum
standard lay for the schools are carried out effectively and efficiently.

Good supervision is characterized by the following enumerated points.

- It is based on mutual trust and respect


- Supervisees are offered a choice of supervisor to secure a good match in a
personal level and to meet cultural needs.
- Both supervisors and supervisees have a shared understanding of the
purpose of the supervisory sessions.
- Supervision focuses on sharing and skills to support professional
development and improving service delivery.
- Supervision is regular and based on the needs of the individual and
supervision is provided in case of need.
- Supervisory models are based on the needs of the individual such as one to
one, group, internal or external or distance.
- The employers create protected time for supervisory training and provide
space to facilitate the supervisory session.
- Training and feedback is provided for supervisors.
- Supervision is delivered using a flexible timetable to ensure all staff have
access to session regardless of working patterns.
- Different types of supervision including practice, professional and
managerial supervision is delivered by different supervisors or those who
are trained to manage the overlapping responsibility as both line managers
and supervisors.
- Encourages students to explore new ideas and techniques and to “think
outside the box”.
- Fosters autonomy and independence.
Conclusion
With the era of globalization in every area of human endeavors including
education supervisors and their functions of education inspectors should
resume and behave as instructional leaders of educational transformation
since they are the inputs hence the evaluative statement and value will be
determine by the quality of their guidance and developmental services to
teachers in the classroom.

Question two: Objectives, techniques, and materials of staff supervision

Abstract.

The aim of this exercise is to bring out the objectives, techniques and materials of
staff supervision in schools. Supervision of learning materials is also an important
part of academic supervision, where the school principal checks and assesse
learning device documents, such as lesson plans that are in accordance with the
recent curriculum. In our subsequent paragraphs, objectives, techniques and
materials required for supervision shall be examined.

Objectives of supervision

A few crucial duties of supervision includes: providing directions, developing


policies, analyzing teaching and learning situation, identifying problem areas and
offering solutions. Additionally, it helps to enhance staff relationships, group
dynamics and educational outcomes. There are eight supervision techniques
proven to have a positive influence on teachers work performance, there are
classroom actions, research, classroom visits, teaching demonstrations, in-on-in
activities, teachers work group meetings, training, seminars clinical supervisions,
check lists and rating scale.

Techniques

Impair performance, work problem checklist, handling conflicts, creative problem


solving, design thinking, making meetings meaningful, business meetings and
etiquette rules (Dart Mouts).

Materials

Types of materials needed depend on whether the supervisor is an internal or


external person. An internal supervisor will be the school head or head of
department whereas the external supervisor may be a person from the school
board or ministry of education. Each of these persons need similar but not
identical materials. For the internal supervisor, he or she needs materials such as
pens, note book, recorder, copy of the syllabus, school calendar, school time
table, nominal rule of teachers, and classroom layout and enrolment statistics by
class. For the external supervisor mobility means and time.
