Professional research projects

1- Development of a coupled energy and IAQ model to predict electric and gas energy consumption
and air change rate for houses in Montreal and Miami. The simulated outputs of the coupled model
were verified and compared with single models of EnergyPlus and CONTAM. The results showed
differences between coupled and single-model outputs. The reason for these differences was the
potential of the coupled model to correct temperature and airflow input data instead of defining input
data in single models by users (2017-2019).
2- Designing a coupled model of IAQ and moisture performance with thermal comfort to predict indoor
CO2, indoor PM2.5 and VOCs concentrations, indoor relative humidity (RH), predicted percent
dissatisfaction (PPD) and predicted mean vote (PMV) for houses in Montreal, Vancouver and Miami.
The simulation results of the coupled model were verified and compared with the single models of
CONTAM and WUFI Plus. The results showed that the differences between the output of the
coupled model and the single model are due to the capability of correcting the airflow and
temperature data by the coupled model and their lack of correction by the single models (2019-
2021).
3- Development of triple energy, IAQ and moisture combined model in predicting space heating/cooling
energy consumption, indoor CO2 concentration and indoor relative humidity for houses in Montreal,
Vancouver and Miami. After verification, the simulated results of the triple combined model output
were compared with the single models of EnergyPlus, CONTAM and WUFI Plus, and there were
differences. The results showed that the reason for this difference is the potential of correcting the
parameters of airflow, temperature and space heating/cooling flow by the combined model and the
lack of this correction by the single models (2021-2022).
4- Energy optimization of a 10-story high-rise in Tehran by eQuest software. In this project, 11 energy-
efficient scenarios of exterior wall insulation, ground floor insulation, roof insulation, using double
glazing windows, window exterior shading, daylighting control, using lighting systems with low power
demand, equipment with low power density, fan power control, using a chiller plant with high
efficiency, and also efficient hot water loop were analyzed were optimized through the Life Cycle
Cost Analysis method. The results showed that energy optimization led to 57% energy savings in
the optimal building compared to the old building (2010-2011).
5- Technical, Economical and Environmental Assessment of the heating system of a residential
building and a four-floor 12-unit residential building in Tehran by using ProForm 4.0 software in
order to replace the boiler heating system with vertical geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) system in
Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), the results of this replacement forecasted 3-year SPB and
reduction of more than 6,000 GJ of natural gas and 3,000 tons of CO2 over 10 years during the
CDM project (2009-2010).
6- Using ASHRAE Standards 90.1, 62.1, 160 and 55 in the analysis of optimal space heating/cooling
energy consumption, indoor CO2, VOCs and PM2.5 concentration, indoor relative humidity (RH),
predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PPD) and predicted mean vote (PMV) for 3 houses in
Montreal, Vancouver and Miami. The results showed the differences between the energy, indoor air
quality, moisture and thermal comfort data and the acceptable ASHRAE Standards (2019-2022).
