By:- Gezahegn Tesama DERESSA

DIPP: Geography

YEAR 201
Abstract

This research action will entitled as how to improve grade 10 h female students’ participation in
Dilachin General Secondary school Addis ketama Kifla ketama , Ethiopia. The participation of
females in educational system is not equivalent to the participation of male students in developing
countries like Ethiopia due to traditional attitude and because of different factors. Dlachin secondary
school is one area where female participation is very low when compared with male students
especially in grade 10h students. The main objective of this action research will to improve the female
students’ participation in Addis Ababa Education Bureau Addis ketama Kifla ketama Dilachin
General Secondary school , Ethiopia. In this action research, 32 total populations of female students,
to achieve this action research, sample size used was 10 female students and 2 female teachers were
selected to collect appropriate information from primary and secondary data sources through
interview and questionnaire
CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Back Ground of the Study

Ethiopia is one of the member countries that adapted the millennium development declaration
with its main objectives of poverty reduction which resulted in prioritizing the improving
female students’ participation in education. Investigating on factors that affect female
students’ participation are the sign of for poverty alleviation programs since female education
is one of component of millennium development goal (Ministry of Education, 1994).
Assessment of factors in female students’ participation is a global concern. However,
developing countries like Ethiopia have suffered to improved students’ participation from
primary school to university. The participation of female students in Dilachin school in grade
10th is in question for different factors. The issue requires serious attention to improving the
participation of female students in Dilachin school in grade 10 th. Thus, the specific objective
of the action research is to minimize the factors that affecting females students’ participation
in Dilachin secondar school of grade 10th.

1.2. Statement of the Problem

The action research conducted to improving the participation of female students which is a
major problem in Dilachin secondaryschool of grade 10 th. There is low participation of grade
10th female students because after they learn certain contents of the lesson, some teachers
resist using student centred teaching and learning because they consider this way as their
limitation. On the other hand, Merger (1984), denoted that if teachers are teaching things that
cannot be evaluated they are in awkward position at bang unlike to demonstrate that they are
teaching anything at all due to this and other reasons this action research will conducted to
give answer for the following leading questions.

1.3. Objectives of the study

1.3.1. General objective

The general objective of the study will be improving female students’ participation in
Dilachin secondary school of grade 10th section 8
1.3.2. Specific objective
• To identify level of teachers’ difficulties regarding the teaching methodology

• To identify factors affecting female students’ participation

To assess the major difficulties that female students face in their current practices
participation

1.4 Research questions

• Do teachers face difficulty concerning student centred teaching methodology?

• What is the role of female students to improving their participation?

• Do teachers face difficulties to give tutorial for female students to improve the
participation of female student

1.5. Significant of the Action Research

Since the action research focused on how to improve the participation of female students
at dilachin general secondary school, all stake holders will be benefited from the result of
the result of this action research. Therefore, it is significant in the following areas: firstly,
it will create awareness about the level of difficulty that teachers face while they are
selecting appropriate teaching methods and inspire them to acquire further skill.
Secondly, it provides teachers information about the status of female students’
participation on the basis of current practice. Thirdly, it will inform female students to
consider their roles to wards to improving their participation. Lastly, it will insist other
researchers to do more on the same or related issue in the future.

1.6. Scope of the Action Research

Conceptually, this action research is delimited to improving female students’ participation
in Dilachin secondary school of grade 10th. Section 8

1.7. Limitation of Action Research

At the time of conducting this action research the researcher faced time and resource
constraints that cause challenges which made the action research from finding further
result beyond what will obtained.
CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

2.1 The role of teacher for student’s participation

Webb and villainy (1996) suggested that teacher need subject knowledge which concepts and
procedures of the discipline but also the pedagogical content knowledge which include the
way of representing the analogies like examples and demonstrations. You need to know how
they learn and what motivates them to learn both collectively and individually. The roles of
teachers are facilitating, controlling, promoting, providing resource, assisting, organizing,
initiating them to participate, giving tutorial and observing what the pupils do as information
providers as a role model and as a planner.

Generally, the teacher is responsible to students in making them to learn because he/ she
expected to set high expectation with inspire their motivation and challenging pupils,
Promote good progress and out comes by purples, Demonstrate good subject and curriculum
knowledge, Plan and teacher well-structured lessons and Manage behavioural effectiveness to
ensure a good and sate learning environments to have clear rules and routines for behavioural
in class room and take responsibility for promoting good and convertors behaviour both in
class room and in the school.

2.2 The role of students to improving students participation

Educator and researchers have recognized that students learn best by doing participation in
language caucuses.

According to Roscheleal (2000), when students engaged in activity in constructing

knowledge from a combination of experience inter privation and in structured interaction
with peers and teacher, they are more likely to going an expert in understanding of concepts.
In such case students are able to practice and master actively and effectively before going to
the next one. That means students need to respond to particular information before his/he can
be associated with a new one.

2.3 Teachers Professional Relation

Teachers link student with students and other school teachers, demonstrators’ families and
community members to faster the learning success and healthy development of their students.
The nature of these interactions among different stake holders varies depending on teacher’s
intension and needs of their students particularly those at risk of school failure can be fitte
from certain protective supports provide by teachers

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

To analyse the collecting data, the researcher to use qualitative technique of data analysis.
Because, this technique of data analysis is useful to explain the collected data by using
word, numbers, percentages and average values.

3 .2 Data source
The action research conducted in Dilachin secondaryschool of grade 10 th student to
investigate the improving female students’ participation, data sources use will be collected
through questionnaires, observation and interview and the secondary data sources will
collected from related reference books, study papers, other relevant materials and articles
from internet.

3.3 Study population

According to secondary data collected from Dilachin secondary school, the total number of
grade 10th female students is 32.

3.4 Sampling size

This action research will conducte in Dilachin secondaryschool because there are several
problems on the participation of female students in Dilachin secondary school. In achieving
this objective, the action research selected 10 female students form grade 10 and 2 female
teachers purposively because this sample size actually represent total population of the action
research.

3.5 Data Collection Methods (Gathering Tools)

To collect the required data form appropriate sources, the action research use interview,
questionnaire and persona observation.

3.6. Data collection techniques

The techniques of data collection were structured and semi structured open ended and close
ended questions by using pre informative technique to obtain full information regarding
improving female students’ participation in on study area, particularly grade 10 th students
section 8.
