Beth's cables by Knit-a-Zoo

Beth's cables is a seamless top-down raglan cardi


for baby girls, with beautifully combined cables along the
raglan sleeves and down the sides.
It is not difficult to knit but is challenging –
it requires some skills for the cables, but with patience and good
will also beginners will make a beautiful cardi to be proud of!

Beth's cable cardi comes in sizes from 3 months to 1 year but I suggest you rely on the chest measurement rather
than the age, and adapt the lenght of the sleeves and of the body according to your child's measures.
Beth's cable cardi has a garter band on the front with buttons. Buttonholes are on the left side of the cardi seen
from front (female standard buttonholes) so these are knitted at the end of the row since you are knitting from top
down.

Sizes:
3 months: chest 42cm, sleeve 14cm, length 25cm
6 months: chest 44cm, sleeve 18cm, length 29cm
9 months: chest 47cm, sleeve 22cm, length 33cm
12 months: chest 50cm, sleeve 25cm, length 37cm

Material:
Grignasco Knits Merinogold, 100% extrafine sleeve
merino wool, 50 gr 125 m/137 yrd
150-200-250-300 gr

Gauge: length
23 sts x 31 rows = 10 cm/4 in.

Circular needles 4.0 (US6) (you can use straight


needles and circular needles or dpn's for the
sleeves), cable holder, spare yarn, tapestry needle,
locking stitch markers, 4 (5 – 5 – 5) funny buttons.

Abbreviations:
CO: cast on
BO: bind off
K: knit
P: purl
C2F (cable, 2 sts held in front): slip 2 sts on cable holder, hold in front, knit 2, knit 2 sts from cable holder
C2B (cable, 2 sts held back): slip 2 sts on cable holder, hold back, knit 2, knit 2 sts from cable holder
KF&B: knit the same stitch first in the front loop and then in the back loop (increase)
YO: yarn over
K2TOG: knit two stitches together (decrease)

Garter front band: knit the first 4 and last 4 sts of every Cables are worked every 6 rows, buttonholes every 18
row, both RS and WS. rows. Use the stitch marker as a guideline if you get
lost!

Size 3 months:
Work cables on rows: 11, 17, 23, 29
Work buttonholes on row: 25

Size 6 months:
Work cables on rows: 11, 17, 23, 29, 35
Work buttonholes on row: 25

Size 9 months:
Work cables on rows: 11, 17, 23, 29, 35, 41
Work buttonholes on row: 23, 43

Size 12 months:
Work cables on rows: 11, 17, 23, 29, 35, 41, 47
Work buttonholes on row: 23, 43

(All sizes) To finish the yoke, work one more row: R30
(R36 – R42 – R48 – R54).

Buttonholes: in the rows where you find written


"buttonhole" you have to knit k1, yo, k2tog, k1 instead
of the last garter band (at the end of your row).

Cables: first cable: p1, C2F, p1 - second cable: p1, C2B,


p1. (one set for each sleeve).
Cables are knitted between the increases for the raglan
sleeve. So you will not increase before and after the
stitch marker, but just BEFORE and AFTER each cable.
The cable is intended *1 purl st, 4 knit sts, 1 purl st*.

Increase row: the increase is [k to marker, kf&b, cable,


kf&b] 4 times, k to end, on every right row – 8
increases per row.

YOKE
Sizes: 3 (6 – 9 – 12 months)
CO 70 (80-80-90) sts on straight or circular needles.
R1-2: knit all
R3: k9 (12-12-14), *p1, k4, p1, k9 (9-9-10), p1, k4, p1*,
k10 (14-14-18), repeat *-*, k9 (12-12-14)
Place markers before and after the cables as you go.
R4 and all even rows: k4, purl the purls sts and knit the TORSO
knit sts, k4 Buttonholes
R5 increase row and cable (take as example for the (Row count starts again from R1 below, so you have to
other cable-rows): k8 (11-11-13), *kf&b, 1st cable, knit these buttonholes at the indicated rows, counting
kf&b, k7 (7-7-8), kf&b, 2nd cable, kf&b*, k8 (12-12-16), from row 1 of the torso)
repeat *-* kf&b, k8 (11-11-13). 3 months: work buttonholes on rows: 13, 31
Fix a stitch marker to a stitch on this row so you have a 6 months: work buttonholes on rows: 7, 25, 43
starting point for row count. 9 months: work buttonholes on rows: 1, 19, 37
R7: buttonhole as described above. 12 months: work buttonholes on rows: 13, 31, 49

GARTER BAND (start on wrong side)


R1-4: knit all
R5: BO loosely knitwise. Sew your buttons.

SLEEVES
Transfer the sts of the sleeve from spare yarn to a
circular needle and pick up 3 sts from under the arm.
There is a sideways loop at the edge of each side of the
work: pick up the closest to the right needle*, pick up
through the stitch underneath the arm that sits
between the two sides, and then the other loop.
Check your gauge! Could be different when you use
straight or circular needles. Use Magic loop method for
Courtesy of Knisterose sleeves. (*Put a stitch marker before this stitch. This is
the beginning of the round if you use dpn's).
R1 (right side): (remove all markers as you go) knit to Knit all for 33 (43, 53, 63) rounds, decreasing every 4
one st before the cable, kf&b. *P1, put 4 sts on cable (5, 7, 8)th round for a total of 8 times.
holder on front , p1, knit the sts on cable holder. Put Decrease: k1, k2tog, knit to 3 sts from the end, ssk, k1
the sts of the sleeve on a spare yarn. Put 1 st on cable
holder on back, k4 pulling your yarn very well, purl the
st on cable holder, p1*. Kf&b, knit across the sts of the
back, kf&b before the cable. Repeat *-*for the other
cables and sleeve. Kf&b, knit to end.
The cable is now *2 purl sts, 8 knit sts, 2 purl sts* (no
more increases before and after the cables)

R2-4: k4, purl the purls sts and knit the knit sts, k4
R5: *knit to before the purl sts, p2, C2F, C2B, p2*,
repeat once, knit to end.
R6-10: k4, purl the purls sts and knit the knit sts, k4
