Problem Set No. ______

Allowable Stress Design and Thin Walled Pressure Vessel

Name: ____________________________________ Date: ________________

Year and Section: ___________________________ Subject: _____________
Instruction: Solve the following problem correctly. Strictly. NO ERASURES/CORRECTION
ALLOWED, ERASURES/CORRECTIONS MEANS WRONG.

1. The wall thickness of a 4-ft-diameter spherical tank is 5/16 inch. Calculate the allowable
internal pressure (in MPa) if the stress is limited to 8000 psi.
2. A cylindrical pressure vessel is fabricated from steel plating that has a thickness of 20 mm.
The diameter of the pressure vessel is 480 mm and its length is 2.0 m. Determine the
maximum internal pressure that can be applied if the longitudinal stress is limited to 140
MPa, and the circumferential stress is limited to 60 MPa.
3. Find the limiting peripheral velocity of a rotating steel ring if the allowable stress is 10 ksi
and steel weighs 470 lb/ft3. At what revolutions per minute (rpm) will the stress reach 30
ksi if the mean radius is 11 in.?
4. The tank shown in Fig. 1 is fabricated from 1/4-in steel plate. Calculate the maximum
longitudinal and circumferential stress caused by an internal pressure of 125 psi.
5. A pipe carrying steam at 3 MPa has an outside diameter of 430 mm and a wall thickness
of 9 mm. A gasket is inserted between the flange at one end of the pipe and a flat plate used
to cap the end. How many 40-mm-diameter bolts must be used to hold the cap on if the
allowable stress in the bolts is 80 MPa, of which 55 MPa is the initial stress? What
circumferential stress is developed in the pipe? Why is it necessary to tighten the bolt
initially, and what will happen if the steam pressure should cause the stress in the bolts to
be twice the value of the initial stress?
6. The 50-kg flowerpot is suspended from wires AB and BC which have diameters of 1.5 mm
and 2 mm, respectively. If the wires have a normal failure stress of 350 MPa, determine
the factor of safety of each wire. (Refer to figure 2)
7. The hangers support the joists uniformly, so that it is assumed the four nails on each hanger carry
an equal portion of the load. Determine the smallest diameter of the nails at A and at B if the
allowable stress for the nails is 2000 psi. The hangers only support vertical loads. (Refer to figure
3)
8. The pin support A and roller support B of the bridge truss are supported on the concrete abutments.
If the square bearing plates at C and D are 25 in. × 21 in., and the bearing failure stress for concrete
is 4 ksi, determine the factor of safety against bearing failure for the concrete under each plate.
(Refer to figure 4)
9. The aluminum bracket A is used to support the centrally applied load of 8 kip. If it has a constant
thickness of 0.5 in., determine the smallest height h in order to prevent a shear failure. The failure
shear stress is 23 ksi. Use a factor of safety for shear of F.S. = 3.5. (Refer to figure 5)
10. The steel pipe is supported on the circular base plate and concrete pedestal. If the thickness of the
pipe is t = 5 mm and the base plate has a radius of 150 mm, determine the factors of safety against
failure of the steel and concrete. The applied force is 520 kN, and the normal failure stresses for
steel and concrete are 250 MPa and 35 MPa, respectively. (Refer to figure 6)
