Object: Desk Drawer Slides:
Motivation for choosing this object: The object I have chosen is a pair of desk drawer slides. These
are commonly found in office desks and furniture to facilitate the smooth opening and closing of
drawers. I selected this object because it is a vital component in providing functionality and
convenience in everyday life. The design and precision of the drawer slides directly impact the user
experience, and the application of GD&T and datums can ensure their proper functioning and
longevity.

Tertiary “C” Translation Along Y
Part B:
1. Smooth Sliding: The main function of the desk drawer slides is to allow the drawers to open and
close smoothly. This function requires precision in manufacturing to ensure there is minimal friction
and no binding during operation. Design Characteristics/Features: The alignment of the slide's
tracks, the straightness of the rail, and the parallelism between the left and right slides are critical
design aspects that control smooth sliding.
2. Stability and Load-Bearing: The drawer slides must support the weight of the drawer's
contents and remain stable without wobbling when fully extended. Design
Characteristics/Features: The
thickness and material strength of the slide components, the perpendicularity of mounting holes,
and the flatness of the mounting surface are essential design aspects that control stability and load-
bearing capacity
Part C:
Geometric Tolerances (GD&T) with Datums:
1. Flatness: Applying flatness tolerance to surface which will lie flat on the bottom of the drawer
during assembly. It will allow stability of the drawer while sliding in and out and if the surface is
irregular, it may have an adverse effect on the assembling operation as the slide will not mate
properly with the drawer surface and may cause wobbling of the drawer when sliding.
2. Perpendicularity (to Datum A): Apply perpendicularity tolerance to the mounting holes relative to
Datum A, which is a flat reference surface on the slide. This ensures the slides can be accurately
mounted, allowing smooth sliding and proper alignment.
3. Perpendicularity (to Datum B): Apply perpendicularity tolerance to the slide tracks relative
to Datum B, which is a reference axis on the slide. This ensures that both left and right slides
are precisely aligned with each other, providing smooth operation and stability.
PART D
Inspection Method: To verify that the desk drawer slides meet the specified GD&T controls and
datum requirements, the following inspection process can be used:
