Faculty of Science and Engineering
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Semester Final Examination Semester: Spring 2023
Course Code: ME 313 (9A evening) Time: 3 hours
Course Title: IC Engine Full Marks: 150
PART-A (Marks: 75)
(Answer any three questions including Q. No. 1)
Marks COs

1. (a) Explain blow-down and exhaust stroke by drawing a graph against crank 10 1
angle of an IC engine.

(b) In some IC engines turbochargers are used. What is the purpose of it? 10 2

(c) How does exhaust gas recycle reduces generation of Nitrogen Oxides in IC 10 3
engines.
(d) Exhaust manifolds are usually made of cast iron and are sometimes designed 5 4
to have close thermal contact with the intake manifold. Explain why?

2. (a) Write down the mathematical equation for exhaust gas temperature during 5 1
blow-down.

(b) A 6.4-liter V8 engine with a compression ratio of 9:1 operates on an air- 15 2

standard cycle and has the exhaust process as in Otto cycle. Maximum cycle
temperature and pressure are 2550 K and 11,000 kPa when operating at 3600
RPM. The exhaust valve effectively opens at 52° bBDC. Calculate:
1. time of exhaust blowdown
2. percent of exhaust gas that exits the cylinder during blowdown
3. exit velocity at the start of blowdown, assuming choked flow occurs.
3. (a) Write down the energy distribution equation in an IC engine explaining each
term. 5 3
(b) A 3.0 liter, 5-cylinder, 4-stroke cycle SI engine, with a volumetric efficiency
of 82%, operates at 3000 RPM using gasoline with a lambda value of 0.91. 15 4
Bore and stroke are related as S=1.08B. At a certain point in the engine cycle,
the gas temperature in the combustion chamber is Tg = 21000C while the
cylinder wall temperature is Tw =1900C. Calculate the approximate convection
heat transfer rate to the cylinder wall at this instant.
4. (a) Heat transfer within engines depends on many different variables. List the 10 1
names of some of these variables with short notes
(b) Draw the graphs of engine temperatures as a function of engine speed for a 10 4
typical SI engine and discuss about it.

PART-B (Marks: 75)

(Answer any three questions including Q. No. 5)

5. (a) What is dual cycle IC engine? 5 1

(b) Compare the thermal efficiencies of Otto, Dual and Diesel cycles with graphs. 10 2

(c) The actual cycle experienced by an internal combustion engine is not, in the 5 3
true sense, a thermodynamic cycle. List out the major differences between an
ideal air-standard thermodynamic cycle and actual cycle of IC engines.
(d) Cylinder conditions at the start of compression in an SI engine operating at 15 4
WOT on an air-standard Otto cycle are 60°C and 98 kPa. The engine has a
compression ratio of 9.5:1 and uses gasoline with Combustion efficiency is
96%, and it can be assumed that there is no exhaust residual. Calculate: (a)
Temperature at all states in the cycle. [°C] (b) Pressure at all states in the
cycle. [kPa] (c) Specific work done during power stroke. [kJ/kg] (d) Heat
added during combustion. [kJ/kg] (e) Net specific work done. [kJ/kg] (f)
Indicated thermal efficiency. [%]
6. (a) Two types of friction occur that result in dissipation and loss of useful power 5 2
inside an IC engine. What are these frictions?
(b) A five-cylinder, in-line engine has an 8.15-cm bore, a 7.82-cm stroke, and a 15 4
connecting rod length of 15.4 cm. Each piston has a skirt length of 6.5 cm and
a mass of 0.32 kg. At a certain engine speed and crank angle, the
instantaneous piston speed is 8.25 m/sec, and clearance between the piston
and cylinder wall is 0.004 mm. SAE 10W-30 motor oil is used in the engine,
and at the temperature of the piston–cylinder interface, the dynamic viscosity
of the oil is Calculate the friction force on one piston at this condition.
7. (a) What do you understand by fmep of an IC engine? Explain by mathematical 5 2
equation.
(b) Dynamometer data of a five-cylinder, four-stroke cycle, displacement, CI 15 3
engine gives:

Calculate:
1. indicated power at 3000 RPM
2. fmep at 1500 RPM
3. friction power lost at 4000 RPM

8. (a) Oils are used in IC engines for different purposes. List out the purposes with 5 1
short notes.
(b) Viscosity is an important property of lubricating oil. Explain viscosity by 15 4
mathematical equation. Draw dynamic viscosity graphs as a function of
temperature for common engine oils.

Note:This format is reviewed by our honorable VC sir. Please follow this format for
semester final question. The instruction are as follows:

 The total marks of the question is 150. It will be converted to 50% while putting in
orbund.
 There will be two parts in the question. Part A and Part B.
 The marks of the parts are distributed equally, i.e. Part A 75 and Part B 75.
 There will be a total of 4 questions in each part.
 From these 4 questions one question is compulsory in both Parts, i.e. in Part A it will be
question no. 1 and in Part B it will be question no. 5.
 The compulsory question has a total mark of 35 and will be divided in 4 sub-sections. All
CO from 1-4 will be covered in this compulsory question.
 From the rest three questions (in each Part) only two questions have to be answered.
 The rest questions have a total of 20 marks.
 The CO of these rest questions can be distributed from 1-4 (you may follow the format in
the given format or divide according to your convenience)
