Handle Housekeeping Requests

The Housekeeping Department

The housekeeping department is in charge of in daily and periodic cleaning of guest's


rooms; and in most cases, public areas. This department takes care of linen and furnishings,
carpets and furniture, beds and bedding, including laundry work for guests and the department.

Housekeeping is a very specialized and essential job. It maintains high standards of


housekeeping practices for optimum guest satisfaction. The efficiency of the housekeeping staff
contributes to the success of the whole hotel, equally with the staff of the kitchen, restaurant or
reception. The reputation and success of any hotel depends upon the efficiency and contribution
of its entire staff, especially the people who deal with the guests.

Roles and Functions of Key Personnel in Housekeeping Department

Executive Housekeeper
▪ Heads of the Housekeeping; represents the department at the General Manager’s meetings.
▪ Ensure the available resources (human resource, material, machine, space and time) are
effectively utilized
▪ Accounts for the over-all cleanliness, maintenance and aesthetic upkeep of the hotel/property.
▪ Responsible for translating hotel, policies, procedures and standards into housekeeping
operations

Assistant Housekeeper
▪ Assigns to the delegated works
▪ Explains the executive housekeeper’s policies, procedures and standards to all the
housekeeping supervisors
▪ Ensure the actualization at the operation level
▪ Perform the duty of an executive housekeeper in his/ her absence

Floor Supervisor
▪ Responsible for cleanliness, maintenance and servicing the allotted guest floors, such as
guest rooms, corridors, floor pantries, staircases and fire exits

Desk Control Supervisor


The control desk is the center of all accurate information dissemination in housekeeping
department. Hence, it has to be manned all-through 24 hours.
▪ Coordinates communication with housekeeping personnel spread to all parts of the hotel
▪ Coordinates with the front office to take over departure rooms for cleaning and to release
clean rooms.
▪ maintains all records, data required for day-to-day operations of housekeeping
▪ Controls lost and found procedures

Room Attendants
▪ Also known as chambermaids or room boys
▪ Perform cleaning of guest rooms and bathrooms
▪ Ensure the privacy of guests at all times
*** Guest Service Associates nowadays are called room attendants. Their performance
reflect directly the status of housekeeping of the hotel

Linen Room Supervisor


▪ Purchases, stores, issues and assures cleanliness of linen
▪ Keeps track of all types of linen in the hotel
▪ Coordinates with the exchange of soiled linen for fresh ones
▪ Maintains proper storage conditions to maximize security from damage and theft

Linen Room Attendant


▪ Assists the supervisor by issuing linen and maintaining the required documents

Uniform Room Supervisor


▪ Responsible for providing clean and presentable uniforms
▪ Oversees maintenance of proper condition of uniforms.
▪ Controls inventory of various uniforms at various stages of use such as soiled, sorted –out,
clean, torn, etc.
▪ Prepares intended budget for supply of additional uniform material

Uniform Room Attendant


▪ Issues the uniforms and receives soiled uniforms to be given to the laundry
*Physical work such as counting, bundling and transporting of uniform and linen are taken care of by
helpers

Public Area Supervisor


▪ Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of public areas such as restaurants, bars,
banquet halls, offices, lobby, shopping arcade, health club, swimming pool areas and guests
lifts.
▪ Works at one area per shift

Housemen
▪ Takes charge of heavy and physical cleaning (casual works) such as shifting of furniture,
cleaning of windows, scrubbing of the rooms and lobby.

Night Supervisors
▪ Handle all aspects of housekeeping for night operations
▪ Supervise the conduct of cleaning schedules
Tailor/Upholsterer
▪ Restores uniforms, linen and upholstery no longer in use

Horticulturist
▪ Responsible for the conservation of all landscapes and gardens

Florist
▪ Responsible for all internal flower arrangements in guest rooms, public areas, banquet,
buffets, etc.

Gardener
▪ Upkeeps the allotted landscape area and maintains internal plants and roof garden
