1 General Information
The Beckwith M-3425A converter is designed for use with the OMICRON Test Universe 2.22 software for
testing the M-3425A generator protection relays. The converter provides all necessary data for testing the
generator protection functions (see chapter 2 ) of the M-3425A relays.
The following software version and functional range are modeled in this converter:
• M-3425A Expanded
Note: This converter is tested with the relay described above. It may work with similar relays, too.
In any way the converter is used, follow the quick start instructions and create your test using LinkToXRIO
or start using the relay specific test template (for more information, see the test template documentation).
5 Functional Range
The Beckwith M-3425A XRIO converter implements the following functions:
• 81 Over/Underfrequency protection
• 27 Phase Undervoltage protection
• 59 Phase Overvoltage protection
• 59N Neutral Overvoltage protection
• 24 Volts/Hz protection
• 87 Phase Differential protection
• 49 Stator Overload protection
• 46 Negative Sequence Overcurrent protection
• 50, 50N, 50DT, 51N, 51V Instantaneous/Definite/Inverse Timed Phase/Neutral Overcurrent
protection

Some of the functions listed above use the RIO interface of the Test Universe software. Consequently, the
test modules are configured automatically without using LinkToXRIO.
The following functions use the RIO interface:
• 87 Phase Differential protection (#1 and #2)
• 21 Impedance protection
• 78 Out of Step protection
• 40 Loss of Field protection
• 46 Negative sequence
• 50, 50N, 50DT, 51N, 51V, 67N Instantaneous/Definite/Inverse Timed Phase/Neutral Overcurrent
protection
• 49 Thermal overload protection (#1 and #2)
8 Converter Structure
The converter is divided into two sections: the M-3425A section and the RIO section. Both sections
consist of several function blocks. The converter comes up in the standard view; the RIOplus section and
the template controller section can only be seen in the advanced view.
Note: The default value of current direction of the CT's is set to FromProtectedObject viz. from the
generator away. If your CT's are connected differently to your system, please change these parameters
under Power System Parameters.
Note: The converter is build for a generator system which has two equal dimensioned phase current
transformers on both sides of the generator. If your system is different please change the settings for the
primary and secondary nominal current transformer values under Power System Parameters. This
changing may not cause to problems, because most of the pickup values of the different generator
protection functions are relative to the generator nominal currents. The others protection functions are
dedicated to a generator side and its nominal currents. For more information see the Beckwith Generator
Protection Test Template manual or chapter 8 .

Warning: Do not change any values in this section. The values have been set using the relay settings of
the Relay Parameter Section.
Exception Note: Every protection function is dedicated to one of the generator side like it is described in
the M-3425A Typical Connection Application Diagram for large machines (Introduction Manual Beckwith
M-3425A Generator Protection page 20-21 or Appendix A). To use this converter for testing smaller
machines control the links for the CT settings of the active overcurrent protection stages (46, 51V, 50/51)
with your connection diagram. The 50N/51N neutral overcurrent protection function for side 1 and 2 is
already included. To set this function to side 1, please change the additional setting Neutral (Residual) CT
Connection under Additional Information – Test Parameters – 50/51N Neutral Overcurrent. If they are not
conforming with your connection diagram, you have to change the links for CT Star Point and the relative
IPickup value of each overcurrent group and stage.
Note: Do not activate the former test object view in the advanced mode of the XRIO test object. Changing
parameters in this view could disable formulas in the RIO section.
