The OMICRON test strategy is described in the OMICRON Protection Test Template (PTT) Generator
documentation. For detailed information, see the PTT Generator documentation.

8 Converter Structure
The converter is divided into two sections: the M-3425A section and the RIO section. Both sections
consist of several function blocks. The converter comes up in the standard view; the RIOplus section and
the template controller section can only be seen in the advanced view.

8.1 M-3425A Section

The M-3425 section is divided into four groups: the Relay Parameter Section, the Additional
Information section, the RIO Plus section and the TemplateController section.

8.1.1 Relay Parameter Section

The Relay Parameter Section includes the parameters which have to be changed by the user. All relay
parameters are included in this section and have to be set to the actual relay values. The parameters are
grouped and named as in the Beckwith software IPScom M-3425 Series (M-3820D). Each parameter in
this block is identified by a Foreign ID.

8.1.2 Additional Information

This block contains additional data for testing the M-3425A relay functionality. The block is divided into the
following sections:
General section – includes detailed information needed for the test report like manufacturer,
device type, substation name etc. This section includes parameters which have to be changed by
the user according to the customer relay type and substation.
Power System Parameters section – includes power system configuration information which is
needed for testing the relay protection function with OMICRON Test Universe software, e.g. CT or
VT connection and dimensioning settings. This section includes parameters which have to be
changed by the user according to the customer power system.
Relay Information section - This block has been added for relay specific parameters such as
tolerances which cannot be set by the user, because they are constant values. All values set in
this block can be found in the "M-3425A Generator Protection Relay" manual (M-3425A-SP-05
(10-07) Screen.pdf). Typically, these blocks do not have to be changed, as they are already set to
the values given in the user manual of the relay.
Circuit Breaker Information section – includes information which is required for the CB test.
Test Tolerance section – includes an additional test tolerance to calculate the start and end value
for trip and pickup tests by using the OMICRON TU Ramping module.
Test Parameters section – includes additional test parameters for testing adaptive functions
witch are not directly supported by the OMICRON TU test modules e.g. a voltage level for the 51V
tests. Furthermore it includes additional test parameters which are needed for testing the
protection function but not found in the relay settings. e.g. high operating current stage for the 87
Phase Differential protection function. This section includes parameters which have to be
changed by the user.

Note: The default value of current direction of the CT's is set to FromProtectedObject viz. from the
generator away. If your CT's are connected differently to your system, please change these parameters
under Power System Parameters.

Note: The converter is build for a generator system which has two equal dimensioned phase current
transformers on both sides of the generator. If your system is different please change the settings for the
primary and secondary nominal current transformer values under Power System Parameters. This
changing may not cause to problems, because most of the pickup values of the different generator
protection functions are relative to the generator nominal currents. The others protection functions are
dedicated to a generator side and its nominal currents. For more information see the Beckwith Generator
Protection Test Template manual or chapter 8 .
