I. Key points :-
1.The uppermost layer of the Earth is called soil. It is made up of
tiny pieces of rocks and remains
of dead plants and animals.
2.Soil is very important for living beings because :
1) It provides all minerals that plants need to grow.
2) It protects the roots of the plants from exposure to the hot rays
of the sun.
3) It provides shelter to some animals like insects, rats etc.
4) Micro - organisms present in the soil help in maintaining the
fertility of the soil.
3.The process of breaking up of rocks by wind , water etc. to form soil is called weathering.
4.The three layers of the soil are :
a) top soil- upper most layer
b) sub soil – middle layer
c) bed rock- bottom layer
Top soil- It contains lot of humus, fine particles of sand
and clay ,air and water. Plants receive all the nutrients from
the top soil.
Sub soil- It contains very little organic matter. The roots of
some plants grow in sub soil.
Bed rock- It contains large pieces of rocks. Water is less in this layer.
1. afforestation
2.terrace farming
3. building embankments
4. constructing wind breaks such as trees and hedges.
5. Avoiding t leaving the soil bare
9.The method in which slope of the hill is cut into steps is called
terrace farming. This reduces the speed of flowing water and only less amount of soil is lost.
The soil that is eroded from
one step is deposited on the next step. So it helps in reducing soil erosion.
II.Answer the following:
Q1. What would happen if there was no soil on Earth?
Q2. Top layer is important for the growth of the plants .Why?
Q3. How do terrace farming help in reducing soil erosion?
III Research Work:-
1.Find out the different types of soil found in UAE and prepare a report on it and write it in the
note book.
