3rd Sunday after Pentecost

ELW Holy Communion Setting Seven

GATHERING
The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (ELW p. 94)

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God,
who forgives all our sin,
whose mercy endures forever.
Amen.
God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your
people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the
power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive
your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our
Savior and Lord.
Amen.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free
ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and
deed, by what we have done and by what we have left
undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we
have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of
your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew
us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk
in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.
Amen.

Water is poured to remind us of our baptism.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in
sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have
been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are
forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the
Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith.
Amen.

GATHERING SONG God of Grace and God of Glory (ELW

705)

1 God of grace and God of glory,

on your people pour your pow'r;
crown your ancient church's story;
bring its bud to glorious flow'r.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
for the facing of this hour,
for the facing of this hour.

2 Lo! the hosts of evil round us

scorn the Christ, assail his ways!
From the fears that long have bound us
free our hearts to faith and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
for the living of these days,
for the living of these days,

3 Cure your children's warring madness;

bend our pride to your control;
shame our wanton, selfish gladness,
rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
lest we miss your kingdom's goal,
let we miss your kingdom's goal.
4 Save us from weak resignation
to the evils we deplore;
let the gift of your salvation
be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
serving you whom we adore,
serving you whom we adore.

GREETING (ELW p. 175)

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.

KYRIE (ELW p. 175)

Lord, have mercy on us; O Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy on us; O Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy on us; O Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy on us; O Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy on us; O Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy on us; O Lord, have mercy.

CANTICLE OF PRAISE (ELW p. 176)

Gloria, gloria, gloria, glory to God on high!
Gloria, gloria, gloria, glory to God on high!
And on earth peace to God's people. Glory to God.
And on earth peace to God's people. Glory to God.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.
All-powerful God, in Jesus Christ you turned death into life
and defeat into victory. Increase our faith and trust in him,
that we may triumph over all evil in the strength of the same
Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
CHILDREN’S FOCUS

WORD
God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.

FIRST READING: Genesis 3:8-15

A reading from Genesis.
8
[Adam and Eve] heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the
garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his
wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among
the trees of the garden.9But the LORD God called to the man, and
said to him, “Where are you?” 10He said, “I heard the sound of you
in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid
myself.” 11He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you
eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12The
man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave
me fruit from the tree, and I ate.” 13Then the LORD God said to the
woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The
serpent tricked me, and I ate.” 14The LORD God said to the
serpent,
“Because you have done this,
cursed are you among all animals
and among all wild creatures;
upon your belly you shall go,
and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.
15
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
Word of God, word of life.
Thanks be to God.
PSALM: Psalm 130
1
Out of the depths
I cry to you, O LORD;
2
O LORD, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my
supplication.
3
If you were to keep watch over sins,
O LORD, who could stand?
4
Yet with you is forgiveness,
in order that you may be feared.
5
I wait for you, O LORD; my soul waits;
in your word is my hope.
6
My soul waits for the Lord more than those who keep
watch for the morning,
more than those who keep watch for the morning.
7
O Israel, wait for the LORD, for with the LORD there is steadfast
love;
with the LORD there is plenteous redemption.
8
For the LORD shall redeem Israel
from all their sins.

SECOND READING: 2 Corinthians 4:13—5:1

A reading from 2 Corinthians.
13
Just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance
with scripture—“I believed, and so I spoke”—we also believe, and
so we speak, 14because we know that the one who raised the
Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you
into his presence. 15Yes, everything is for your sake, so that
grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase
thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
16
So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is
wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.
17
For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal
weight of glory beyond all measure, 18because we look not at
what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be
seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.
5:1
For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we
have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal
in the heavens.
Word of God, word of life.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (ELW p. 179)

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia, alleluia,
alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL: Mark 3:20-35

The holy gospel according to Mark.
Glory to you, O Lord.
[Jesus went home;] 20and the crowd came together again, so that
[Jesus and the disciples] could not even eat. 21When his family
heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, “He
has gone out of his mind.” 22And the scribes who came down from
Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the
demons he casts out demons.” 23And he called them to him, and
spoke to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24If a
kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
25
And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be
able to stand. 26And if Satan has risen up against himself and is
divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come.
27
But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his
property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the
house can be plundered.
28
“Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and
whatever blasphemies they utter; 29but whoever blasphemes
against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of
an eternal sin”—30for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
31
Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside,
they sent to him and called him. 32A crowd was sitting around him;
and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters
are outside, asking for you.” 33And he replied, “Who are my
mother and my brothers?” 34And looking at those who sat around
him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35Whoever
does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON

HYMN OF THE DAY A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (ELW 505)

1 A mighty fortress is our God,

a bulwark never failing;
our helper frees us from the flood
of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe,
forsworn to work us woe,
with guile and dreadful might
is armed to wage the fight:
on earth there is no equal.
2 If we in our own strength confide,
our striving turns to losing;
the righteous one fights by our side,
the one of God's own choosing.
You ask who this may be:
Christ Jesus, it is he,
the Lord of hosts by name.
No other God we claim!
None else can win the battle.

3 Though all the world with devils fill

and threaten to devour us,
we tremble not, we trust God's will:
they cannot overpow'r us.
Though Satan rant and rage,
in fiercest war engage,
this tyrant's doomed to fail;
God's judgement must prevail!
One little word shall triumph.

4 God's Word shall stand above the pow'rs,

shall end all their thanksgiving.
The Spirit and the gifts are ours,
for God with us is living.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
though all of these be gone,
they yet have nothing won.
The kingdom's our forever!
CREED (ELW p. 105)
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
We come before the triune God to pray for our communities,
ourselves, and our world.
You reawaken our hearts to your mercy. We give you thanks for
renewers of the church in every age. We give thanks for chances
for the church to come together and grow, like this weekend’s
Synod Assembly. Enliven the creativity and persistence of all
seeking to transform the church into a closer vision of your
beloved community. We pray for our new bishop, Bishop (
name here ). We give thanks for the work of Bishop
Laurie Skow Anderson and look forward to your continued work in
our midst. Merciful God,
receive our prayer.
Our nations and communities are divided, O God. Teach us again
to listen with curiosity and mercy, even in disagreement. Grant us
the humility to acknowledge our hardness of heart and make us
bold in modeling cooperation for the sake of the common good.
Let us not lose heart when the world seems full of conflict and
suffering, but trust in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the renewal
of hope for all people. Merciful God,
receive our prayer.
Hear the prayers of all who cry out to you from the depths of fear,
despair, or hopelessness, especially: Ann & Rod; Gary & Kay;
Deb; Dan, Lauren, Michael & Mary; Brad, Jessica, Cole & Mason;
Pastor Jeff & Jennae; Katharine; Michael & Susan; Nancy;
Shirley; Michael; Katharine & Bob; Jasmine; Mike; Marie & Ray;
Pastor Dale & Kathy, Phyllis, Kaitlin, Mark & Sharon, Evelyn,
Caroline & Cliff….and all others we now lift up in prayer.
Strengthen first responders and health care workers in their times
of exhaustion or frustration. With haste, rescue victims of
trafficking, exploitation, and abuse, and bless organizations and
individuals who work on their behalf. Merciful God,
receive our prayer.
Grant wisdom and clarity to all who are in seasons of discernment
and transition: high school graduates preparing for first jobs or
new educational journeys, those who are shifting careers, and
those who are navigating changes in their relationships.
Accompany them with your peace. Merciful God,
receive our prayer.
Mighty God, keep our children safe in all they do. Give wisdom to
our young drivers and those who play outdoors. Show us all a
good balance of work and play, so that we may fully enjoy the
wonders of your world. Today we especially pray for: Frederick;
Tatum; Neve & Lane; Meghan; Mary & Michael; Tessa, Toryn, &
Tadym; Lewis, Eli, Addie & Finn. Merciful God,
receive our prayer.
Receive our prayers, O God, and come quickly to our aid, through
the power of the Spirit and the love of Jesus Christ.
Amen.

PEACE (ELW p. 180)

The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.

MEAL
God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ.

OFFERING Let the Vineyards Be Fruitful (ELW 184)

Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord,

and fill to the brim our cup of blessing.
Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown,
that we may be fed with the bread of life.
Gather the hopes and dreams of all;
unite them with the prayers we offer.
Grace our table with your presence,
and give us a foretaste of the feast to come.

OFFERING PRAYER (ELW p. 180)

Let us pray.
God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love
endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit
from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the
world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior
and Lord.
Amen.

GREAT THANKSGIVING
DIALOGUE (ELW p. 180)
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

PREFACE (ELW p. 181)

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,
that we should at all times and in all places
give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God,
through our Savior Jesus Christ;
who on this day overcame death and the grave,
and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of
everlasting life.
And so, with all the choirs of angels,
with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven,
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (ELW p. 181)

Holy, holy, holy Lord God,
God of might and power; holy is the Lord.
Holy, holy, holy, holy Lord God,
God of might and power; holy is the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest, hosanna here on earth.
Blest is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest, hosanna here on earth.
Blest is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE (ELW p. 182)
In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

LORD’S PRAYER (ELW p. 182)

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught
us.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
ALL ARE WELCOME
The story of God in the Hebrew Scriptures and Christian
Scriptures tells us that God cares for the whole community, from
kings to widows, from sick to strong, all imperfect humans. God
brought life to God's people, and we know that life is meant also
for us. This table is God's table, and no one will be denied God's
grace and mercy.
This time is holy time, extended through all of God's creation
through the power of the Holy Spirit, connecting us to the Saints
that came before, the saints that will come after, and the saints
with us now. Please come and break bread with us wherever you
are- online, in the pew, or with us at the table.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION (ELW p. 182)

Come to the banquet, for all is now ready.

COMMUNION SONG (ELW p. 182)

O Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
grant us your peace, grant us your peace.

COMMUNION (ELW p. 182)

The body of Christ, given for you.
The blood of Christ, shed for you.
Amen.
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION (ELW p. 183)
Let us pray.
God of abundance, with this bread of life and cup of salvation you
have united us with Christ, making us one with all your people.
Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may
proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue forever in
the risen life of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

SENDING
God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.

SENDING OF COMMUNION (ELW p. 183)

Gracious God, loving all your family with a mother’s tender care:
As you sent the angel to feed Elijah with heavenly bread, assist
those who set forth to share your word and sacrament with those
who are sick, homebound, and imprisoned. In your love and care,
nourish and strengthen those who will receive this sacrament, and
give us all the comfort of your abiding presence through the body
and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

MISSION STATEMENT (SUMMER)

Seeing God at work in the world, we are moved by the Spirit
through the stories of our ancestors to proclaim our mission
statement with our hearts and our lips: Responding to great
love, given by God's grace, it is our mission to do God's
work with our hands.
