441 Applied Mathematics for Civil Engineering

Time Allowed: 3 hours Thu Htet Zaw
1. Solve the following equations correct to 3.d.p
(a)
10 = 5x
30 + 27 =
(b) 2𝑥−5 2𝑥+5
13

2. (a) Solve the equations x3 – 2x2 - x + 2 = 0 by factor theorem.

(b) In a construction project, a civil engineer needs to determine the cost of materials and labor for
building a bridge. The cost of materials per unit is represented by x yen, and the cost of labor per unit
is represented by y yen. The total cost of materials and labor for the bridge is 10,000,000 yen
Additionally, the engineer knows that the ratio of materials cost to labor cost is 3:2. This means that for
every 3 yen spent on materials, 2 yen is spent on labor. Find the individual costs of materials and labor
to complete the project within the budget.

𝑢𝐿
(c) Transpose m = for L.
𝐿+𝑟𝑐𝑅

2−𝑥
3. (a) Solve the inequality ≥4
𝑥+3

(b) A simple framework is shown in figure for the simple framework ABC that supports load of 100 N
at A, Find the forces

(i) in the ember CA and BA

(ii) Exerted by the framework on the wall at C and B.A.

C

B A

2 tan 𝑥
4. (a) Prove that tan 2 x =
1−𝑡𝑎𝑛2 𝑥

(b) Show that 2 𝐶𝑜𝑠 2 𝐴 – 1 = 𝐶𝑜𝑠 2 A - 𝑆𝑖𝑛2 A

(c) Solve the ө in the range -180֯ ≤ ө ֯ ≤ 180֯ in cos 2 ө + 2 sin ө = -3

5 (a) Differentiate the following

(i) y = 3x2 – 2x2 + 5x – 2

(ii) y = x3 cos 2 x

sin 𝑥
(iii) y=
𝑥

(b) Differentiate y = (2x+1)4 and find the gradient when x = 0

(c) A fencing material with a length of 20m is to be used to fence a secured storage area within a
construction site. Using calculus, determine the dimensions that will give the maximum fenced area.
The fence area is in the shape of a four-sided polygon.

6. (a) ∫ e -2x dx

(b) ∫ (sin ө + 3 cos ө) d ө

(c) Find the area if A ∫o1 e 2x+1

7. In a water absorption test on the following results

were obtained

(a) Mean Absorption

(b) Standard Deviation of absorption

8. (a) Determine the following(i) Deciles (ii)Quartiles

(b) The frequency distribution for a batch of 50 resistant

of similar value as shown in table. Draw the histogram and
ogive.

9. Thirty four percent of cement bags delivered to a construction site is found to not meet the design
specification. A sample of twenty bags is chosen at random from the population. Determine the probability
that the number of cement bas that do not meet the design specification will be (i) exactly three(ii) fewer
than three(ii) three or more.

10. A box contains 40 nickel door handles and 24 brass door handles and 36 aluminum door handles.
Determine the probabilities that (a) both door handles are nickel without replacement. (b) one is brass and
one is nickel without replacement if a component is drawn at random from he box and tested and then a
second component is drawn at random.
