Introduction

This is a step-by-step tutorial in which you learn how to adjust a network comprising of GNSS baselines
and level lines.

GNSS data have been collected and processed to create thirteen independent baselines. These
baselines, along with six level lines that were measured by a digital level, form a combined surveying
network. This network is adjusted to provide optimal coordinates for the points.

The functionality discussed in this guide requires the Adjustment 3D license option.

The data from the following folders will be used in this tutorial:
• GNSS contains the GNSS baselines
• LEVEL contains the level lines
• CONTROL contains the control points
• C-SYS contains the coordinate system and the geoid files.

1. Import GNSS data and coordinate system

1.1 Start Infinity and create a new

project. To import the data, select
Import from the Home ribbon bar.

• The Import dialog opens.

1.2 To import the processed GNSS

baselines, navigate to directory
“GNSS”, highlight the file
“GNSS_Baselines.xml” and select
Import.

1.3 To import the level data, navigate to

directory “LEVEL” in the Import dialog,
highlight the file “Level-Lines.xml” and
select Import.

1.4 To import the control points, navigate

to directory “CONTROL” in the Import
dialog, highlight the file
“control_points.xml” and select
Import.

1.5 To import the coordinate system,
navigate to directory “C-SYS”,
highlight the file “TRFSET.DAT” and
select Import.

1.6 To assign the imported Coordinate

System with the geoid model to the
project as Master, click on the icon
on the right side of the Status
bar, and select UTM32N.

• UTM32N includes the geoid

model which will be used to
compute orthometric heights.
• The graphical view shows the
GNSS baselines, the level lines
and the control points.

2. Define adjustment settings

2.1 To define the adjustment settings,

starting from the coordinate system
kind that will be used, select
Coordinate System in the
Adjustments ribbon tab.

Leica Infinity, How to adjust a GNSS + Level network 4

2.2 Modify the settings in this dialog as
described below:
Coordinate System: WGS84
Select OK to accept the new settings.

2.3 Select Test Criteria from the

Adjustments ribbon tab.

2.4 Modify the settings in this dialog as

described below:
σ a posteriori: Ignore
Select OK to accept the new settings.

2.5 Select GNSS from the Adjustments

ribbon tab.

2.6 Modify the settings in this dialog as
described below:
Source for Centring/Height Errors:
Default Settings for all Observations
Reference Centring Errors: 0.002m
Rover Centring Errors: 0.002m
Reference Height Errors: 0.002m
Rover Height Errors: 0.002m

Select OK to accept the new settings.

2.7 Select Level from the Adjustments

ribbon tab.

2.8 Modify the settings in this dialog as

described below:
Source for Standard Deviations: Use
Defaults
Absolute Level Line: 0.000m
Relative Level Line: 0.001m/sqr(Km)

Select OK to accept the new settings.

2.9 To define the confidence levels used
for computing the absolute and
relative error ellipses as well as the
reliability boxes, select General from
the Adjustments ribbon tab.

2.10 Modify the settings in this dialog as
described below:
Heights – 1D: 95.0%
Error Ellipses - 2D: 95.0%

Select OK to accept the new settings.

3. Adjust the network

3.1 To adjust the network of baselines

and level lines, select Run Full 3D
Adjustment from the Adjustment
ribbon tab.

GNSS data are treated as 3D

and level data as 1D
The adjusted 2D position is
derived from the GNSS
observations and the adjusted
1D position is derived from
both GNSS and level
observations.
3.2 To view the results, select the
Adjustment Results side button from
the Adjustments tab in the Inspector.
• Currently, the network is
adjusted using inner
constraints (free adjustment).
This can be seen in the
Adjustment Type column.
• For the inner-constrained
(free) network solution, the F-
Test value is smaller than the
Critical F-Test value. This
means that, in general, there
are no problems in the
network.

3.3 To view more details for the
adjustment, drill in the results. Use
the drill-in arrow next to the name of
the adjustment result.

3.4 To drill in the results for the

Coordinates, use the drill-in arrow.

3.5 To switch to Observations, use the

drill-in arrow next to the name of the
adjustment result.

3.6 To view the observation residuals, the

standard deviations and the statistical
test results, drill in GNSS or Level
observations, under Observation
Type.

4. Create a report

4.1 To create a network adjustment

report, return to the Adjustment
Results view, highlight the adjustment
result and select ReportsNetwork
Adjustment Report from the
Adjustments ribbon tab or right-click
for context menu.

• The adjustment report

contains all the necessary
information regarding the
network adjustment results,
i.e. parameters used, initial
and adjusted coordinates,
standard deviations,
adjusted observations,
residuals, absolute and
relative error ellipses and
statistical tests for the
reliability of the network.
• In case you need to change
the Report Header, select
Edit and follow the
instructions on the screen.
• In case you need to reset
the Report Header to the
default one, select Reset.
4.2 To view the contents of the report,
scroll down to the very end of it.
Once done, close the Report window
to return to the Adjustment Results
view.

• Under Observation Tests, the

values of the statistical tests
that exceed the critical values -
if any- will be flagged in bold
red.
• For detailed interpretation of
the adjustment report, please
refer to the “Advanced
Adjustment Concepts” and the
“Advanced Network
Adjustment” tutorials.

5. Adjust the network using the control points

5.1 Before running a constrained

adjustment (i.e. using control points),
select the control point icon from the
Adjustments tab in the Inspector and
activate Fix 2D and Fix1D for CP02
and CP04, and Fix 1D for LEV1 and
LEV2.
Hence, CP02 and CP04 will be held
fixed in both position and height
(Control Fixed 3D), whereas LEV1 and
LEV2 will be held fixed only in height
(Control Fixed 1D).

5.2 To run the constrained adjustment,

select Full Adjustment.

• The “Adjustment Type” is now

“Constrained”
• Compared to the previous
result, the “F-Test value” has
increased, but it is still smaller
than the “Crit. value F-Test”.
This increase indicates the
effect of the constrained
(fixed) control points in the
adjustment.

6. Store the result

6.1 To store the adjustment result,

highlight the last result and select
Store Result from the Adjustment
ribbon tab or right-click for context
menu.

You can change the name of

the adjustment result by
typing a new one in the
Property Grid.

6.2 Switch to the View tab to view the
adjusted network graphically.

The confidence ellipses (the

error ellipses multiplied by the
confidence level constant) and
the reliability boxes are also
displayed.
For the fixed control points,
only the reliability boxes are
displayed.
