Part I Introduction to Loop-iNET

Chapter 1 - Key Features
Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the key features of Loop-iNET and ways that it can make
network management more effective for you.

Loop-iNET provides its users with integrated network management over all of Loop’s products. It is
highly scalable (up to 100,000 network elements) and can meet the needs of network management,
both large and small. Loop-iNET provides alarm management, report& statistics, operation fault
tolerance, and FCAPS (fault-management, configuration, accounting, performance and security)
support. Operators’ frequent tasks are automated to save time. Traffic can easily be diverted around
network faults by single point and clicks.

Continue reading to learn more about the capabilities of Loop-iNET.

1.1 Graphical Views

Loop-iNET provides a web-based Graphic User Interface(GUI) to view the Network objects
graphically. Details can be viewed by right-clicking on the views to “drill down” for more detail.

1.1.1 NE Panel View

The Network Element Panel View allows users to determine the status of modules and cards. Loop-
iNET displays a front view of the device with associated modules and cards. The figure below shows
a sample NE panel view, which looks like the actual physical device.

1.2 Alarm Management

Loop-iNET provides current network alarm updates. The object with a current alarm can easily be
seen in the Alarm Monitor Panel. By right-mouse-clicking to gain access to a drop-down menu of
options, the user can instantly gain insight into active alarms occurring in their network. These
features are state-of-the-technology allowing network operators to provide the best network
performance by having instant access to the health of their network.

Alarm information in Loop-iNET permits operators to quickly get to the source of any network
problems by combining a lot of the most useful alarm information into a single window and then
allowing users to quickly gain even more detail by right mouse-clickings. Alarms can then be
forwarded (based on the user’s forwarding criteria) to the appropriate network personnel and tracked
to closure. Statistics of alarms histories are easy to follow to identify repeat problems and then
remedy them. At the bottom of the screen, it shows the Alarm Monitor Panel that displays alarms,
events and Current Active Alarm Summary (CAAS). A sample screen is shown as below.

Part III –Primary Functions & Use

This part of the manual explains the most commonly used system functions after you are familiar with
launching the system, have set Loop-iNET system properly. At this point, you are ready to use Loop-
iNET to gain powerful and extremely useful insight into your network.

This section begins with an overview or high level explanation of the Loop-iNET GUI. It then
progresses to using views of links, nodes and panels, and then closes with a discussion on
monitoring alarms. From the toolbar of Loop-iNET, View and Alarm are discussed in this part of the
manual.

Chapter 3 - Topology View Management

3.1 NE Subnet View Management
Along with the hardware devices, Loop-iNET provides logical views of your network and allows you to
build your network based on those views. Your networking records and database are always kept in
sync with changes to your network with Loop-iNET. The purpose of this section is to instruct you to
view and add objects in Loop-iNET topology.

3.1.1 Working with the Resource Tree and MIB Tree

On the left of NE/Subnet Topology, we have Resource and MIB tabs. A sample screen is shown as
below.

Resource Tree

The Resource tree shows all icon objects in the map. This includes subnets (which contain lower
levels), and NEs(Network Elements). Links are not shown in the resource tree.

Loop-iNET Intelligent Network Management System Page 17

Part III –Primary Functions & Use
Chapter 3 - Topology View Management

 Check the small box on the left of a subnet icon (folder icon) to open or close that sublevel in
the Resource tree.
 If you just want to select one subnet without the underlying NEs, press the Ctrl key and check
the small box to the left of a subnet icon.
 Double-click on any resource name to locate it quickly.
 Input partial or whole resource name in the Find column, the displayed results will be limited
according to the name you input.

Each icon in the Resource Tree is colored according to the status of the represented resource.
Subnet icons (and the top level Root Subnet icon) show the highest priority color of all underlying
resources.

MIB Tree

Select a NE and click on the MIB tab to access the MIB tree. Here is a sample screen.

Most of the functions you perform with the equipments involve the use of Management Information
Bases (MIBs). The MIB is a definition of what management data can be read from and written to a
Loop-iNET managed device. Use this tree to select MIB tables or variables for operation with MIB
menu commands.

Right-click on a MIB table and select Properties to view the details, as shown below.

Page 18 Loop-iNET Intelligent Network Management System

Part III –Primary Functions & Use
Chapter 3 - Topology View Management

By double-clicking the MIB table, you can enter the setup page, as shown below. You can edit the
blue entries, or make setting on Edit MIB Table Entry on the right. After confirming the settings,
please press Apply to save it, or press Cancel to revert it.

3.1.2 Working with the Loop-iNET NE/Subnet Views

Loop-iNET offers hierarchical views of your network. The contents of a topology can be viewed
graphically in an NE/Subnet Topology window. It shows objects, including all subnets, links, NEs
and clouds based on the privilege assigned to the current login user. You can rearrange the contents
using drag-and-drop operations or automatic placement. Objects within it can be selected for menu
operations.

Loop-iNET Intelligent Network Management System Page 19

Part III –Primary Functions & Use
Chapter 3 - Topology View Management

When you click iNET START/ View / Topology View, and select NE Subnet tab, you will see the
following screen.

There are multiple ways to view NEs displayed in the network. The resource or geography trees’
relationship with the map on the right allows you to easily get to information whether you are in either
the resource tree on the left or the topology map on the right. Under the resource tree on the left, we
can deselect any object to make it invisible. Subnets are represented as circles in the right panel of
the window. The lines are topolinks and the small squares are the NEs (the NE names are below the
squares).

The frame of object icons are displayed using the color of the highest priority unacknowledged event
for the corresponding object.

On the right top of the topology view, there are some options. You can move the cursor onto it to see
the function summary shown on the top.

3.1.2.1 Subnet Views

If we double-click a subnet in the Resource Tree, that subnet will be highlighted in the center of
graphical display on the right. You can double-click the subnet to expand or shrink it, or move some
objects into this subnet for the sake of efficient management.

Page 20 Loop-iNET Intelligent Network Management System

Part III –Primary Functions & Use
Chapter 3 - Topology View Management

Here are some hints for you to rearrange the View window, for your reference.
 Double-click on any subnet in the topology to open or close that subnet. Note that a subnet
icon possibly contains sub-layers of subnets.
 To easily move the map view, select the button(the hand shape button), click anywhere
on the topology. Then scroll up/down to change the map size, or drag the whole map view.
 To move the resource within the network, select the button and move any item to
anywhere as you want. You can also select multiple objects by pressing the Shift key.
 Select the Zoom button (Zoom in/out) and click on the map view to see more or less
of the map view. Note when the map is already in original size, it won’t respond even if you
click the zoom in button.
 Use the button (original size) to return to the original map view.
 Use the button(View All) to view the whole topology. In this state, the view contents are
automatically zoomed so that all icons are visible. As the icon sizes get smaller, the icon
image is hidden and then the name is hidden.
 Use the button to move an object or change the size of a subnet.

3.1.2.1.1 Adding and Deleting a Subnet

A subnet can contain many other objects in multiple hierarchies. You can double click on a subnet to
expand or shrink the subnet view. Subnet cannot be polled or used as targets for MIB display

9.5 Schedule Polling

This feature is to view and query the schedule polling tasks, including the Task Name, Polling
Type, Equipment Name, Summary, etc. Currently it only displays the tasks of online DMEs, and
the Polling Type must be XC Data.

Click iNET START/System/Schedule Polling, then you will see the following screen.

If no value is input in the query conditions, you will see the list of all schedule polling tasks.
However, you can limit the display results by specifying some query conditions and clicking
Query. For how to make queries, please refer to other query sections, such as System Logs.

You can also choose an entry to Edit the settings, or Execute the task manually.

The edit page is shown as below. In this screen, you can specify the Start Time and Execution
Time, but the Execution Frequency Setting is fixed (Daily). Moreover, the Enable schedule
maintenance is inactive by default, but you can also select the checkbox to activate it. At last,

9.8 Services

9.8.1 NTP Time Sync

From the point of view of network administration, the use of NTP has many advantages since it
permits the automatic synchronization of all connected machines. In other words, the
administrator does not have to go from machine to machine setting the local clock. Besides,
security is reinforced with clock synchronization of the equipment hooked up, for the investigation
of attacks to computers depends on checking the logs in different machines. The inconsistency of
the time recorded by each machine makes this work impossible. Therefore, Loop-iNET
incorporates the NTP service, so that the customer can synchronize the time of different
computers conveniently.

Note: If you install multiple Loop-iNET servers on different machines, it is suggested

synchronizing the time of these machines by using NTP service, but it needs you to disable the
option of Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server, as shown in the screen below.

don’t forget to press Apply button to make your settings take effect.

0Appendix C: Frequently Asked Questions

3. The SNMP trap port is occupied by other program, so please end the program occupying the
SNMP port or change the equipment port.

2. Q. How does my event filter work?

A. If there are multiple filters for one event as shown in the screen below, the filter with the
smallest ID will take the highest priority, and so forth. Moreover, if no condition is set under Match,
all items listed in the Conditions will be matched as alarm under this filter.
In this example, the filter named Filter Creation OK takes the highest priority, and all events
related to Filter Creation will be shown as alarms.
