Subject: Computing Worksheet

Name: _________________________Year: 9 Section: ____ Date: _________________

Learning Objective:

Understand the effect of sample rate, duration, and sample resolution on the playback quality and
the size of a sound file.

Unit2: Representing Sounds Topic: Sampling and recording

sound
Task:

A sound engineer is using a sampling rate of 2500Hz and a sample resolution (Bit Depth) of 5
bits. What is the minimum file size of a 6 second recording? Give your answer in Bytes.
File size of a sound file formula: sample rate (Hz) × sample resolution (bits) × duration (secs)

Calculate the file size in bits for a 1-minute sound recording that has used a sample rate of 2,000
hertz and a sample resolution of 6 bits.

Calculate the file size in bits for a 3-minute sound recording that has used a sample rate of 1,000
hertz and a sample resolution of 2 bits.

Sampling rate = 44,100Hz, Sample resolution = 16 bits and duration 5 seconds, Calculate the
sound file size in bits of the following sound recording?

Task2: Find the file size of a sound recording that has been sampled at 44,100Hz with a sample
resolution of 16 bits. The original analogue signal lasts for 200 seconds, how many bits of
storage will be required to store all the samples taken in the recording process?

Calculate the number of megabytes for the above recording

Calculate the file size of a 10 second radio jingle, using a sample rate of 8,000Hz and a 16-bit
sample resolution.

Convert this into kilobytes:

Calculate the file size – Solutions

Formula .
To calculate the file size of a sound file, use the following formula:

sample rate (Hz) × sample resolution (bits) × duration (secs)

Task Calculate the file size .

1) Calculate the file size in bits for a 2-minute sound recording that has used a sample rate of 2,000 hertz and a
sample resolution of 4 bits.

960,000 bits

2) Calculate the file size in bits for a 2-minute sound recording that has used a sample rate of 1,000 hertz and a
sample resolution of 4 bits.

Page 2
480,000 bits

3) Calculate the file size in bits for a 1-minute sound recording that has used a sample rate of 2,000 hertz and a
sample resolution of 6 bits.

720,000 bits

4) Calculate the file size in bits for a 3-minute sound recording that has used a sample rate of 1,000 hertz and a
sample resolution of 2 bits.

360,000 bits

Explorer task .
Convert your answers to the above questions into bytes.

1) 120,000 bytes

2) 60,000 bytes

3) 90,000 bytes

4) 45,000 bytes

Calculate the download time for sound it’s important to remember that 100Mbps stands for 100
Megabits per second (where 8 Megabits are equal to one MegaByte). For this reason, if you’re downloading
a 100MB (100 MegaByte) file, it will take you 8 seconds to do this and not one second.

Download time= 100MB/100Mbps =100MB/ (100/8)=8sec
