The Legend of Surabaya
The Legend of Surabaya
Once upon a time in East Java there were two powerful animals, namely Sura and Baya. Sura is a shark
and Baya is a crocodile. They live in the sea. Actually they are friends. But when they are hungry, they
are very greedy. They don't want to share their food. They will fight for it and never stop fighting until
one of them gives up.
It was a very hot day. Sura and Baya are looking for food. Suddenly Baya saw a goat. Then Sura and the
baya fought over who would eat the goat until a fight broke out .
"Me too. What should we do to stop fighting? Do you have any ideas?" Baya asked.
Then Sura suggested that they divide the territory, Sura looked for food in the sea and Baya looked for
food on land, the border was the beach. Baya agreed to this suggestion. Then they both lived in different
places.
But one day, Sura went ashore and looked for food in the river. He was very hungry and there was not
much food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he found out that Sura had broken his promise.
“Hey, what are you doing here? This is my place. Your place is in the sea!”
“But, there is water in the river, right? So, this is my place too!” Sura said.
Then Sura and Baya fought again. They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya's tail. Baya did the same thing
to Sura. He bit so hard that Sura finally gave in. He returned to the sea. Baya was very happy. He's got
his place again. The place where they fought was a mess. Blood was everywhere. People then always
talked about the fight between Sura and Baya. They then named the place of the fight Surabaya, derived
from the words Sura the Shark and Baya the Crocodile. The people also made the war a symbol of the
city of Surabaya.
