Marco Polo
A. GENERAL.
1
Marco Polo (°1254 +1324) was a Venetian merchant traveler from the Venetian Republic whose travels are
recorded in Il Milione, a book which did much to introduce Europeans to Central Asia and China. He learned
about trading whilst his father and uncle, Niccolò and Maffeo, travelled through Asia and apparently met
Kublai Khan. In 1269, they returned to Venice to meet Marco for the first time. The three of them embarked
on an epic journey to Asia, returning after 24 years to find Venice at war with Genoa; Marco was imprisoned,
and dictated his stories to a cellmate. He was released in 1299, became a wealthy merchant, married and had
three children. He died in 1324, and was buried in San Lorenzo.

H.4 Spud carrier
The working spud is mounted in a spud carrier moved by means of a hydraulic cylinder. The
cylinder allows a movement of 6 m.
Spudcarrier cylinder:
- Total stroke: 6300 mm
- Effective stroke: 6000 mm
- Bore diameter: 320 mm
- Rod diameter: 250 mm
- Maximum pushing force: 1250 kN
- Maximum pulling force: 500 kN
- Speed: 6 m/min out & 5 m/min in
H.5 Spudhoisting system
Spud hoisting winch suitable for hoisting force of about 200 % of the spud weight: see K.
Spud hoisting system provided with a buffering/wire tensioner/swell compensator cylinder.
- Stroke of swell compensator cylinder: 3 m
- Compensating force swell compensator: adjustable between abt. 5 and 30 % of
spud weight.
- Stroke of buffer cylinder: 1 m
- Force of buffer cylinder in function of the stroke: increasing from abt.50% up to
abt.120% of the spud weight.
H.6 Christmas tree
The Christmas tree’ anchoring system can replace the spud system in offshore sea state
conditions.
H.7 Anchor boom system
Two anchor booms, outreach 40 m, supported by guy wires connected to the cutter ladder
gantry. For anchor hoisting and guy winches see K.
J. DREDGING INSTALLATION
[In the near future :Discharge line of pump 1 in the pump room is provided with a bypass line
enabling water pumping of the inboard pump(s) when pump 1 is stopped.]
At the bow of the vessel, a turning gland with bend, with ball joint for connecting the floating
pipeline is provided.
J.3 Barge loading system
A barge loading system is installed suitable for barges of types: Magellano, Geelvinck,
Niña, Concepción and L’Aigle. Diameter of barge loading system: 800 mm.
