READING

1 Read the article and number the events in order. The first one is numbered
for you.

Broken Dreams
In the early 1900s, Annie Edson Taylor was the first person to go down the Niagara
Falls in a small wooden ‘boat’. It was a very dangerous thing to do but Annie hoped
that it would make her rich and famous.
Annie Edson Taylor was born on October 24, 1838 in New York. She was one of
eight children. As a child, Annie liked to read books and play outside. She married
when she was 17 years old and then she became a teacher. Her husband died a
few years later.

After he died, life was very difficult for Annie. She continued to work as a teacher,
but she had money problems. She worried about her future. One day, she had an
idea. She planned to become the first person to ride down Niagara Falls. She hoped
that this would end her money worries, as she would be famous.

Annie designed a special wooden ‘boat’ for her dangerous adventure. She had to
climb inside it and close the door. She paid a manager to organize the event and tell
rd
the newspapers. On October 24, 1901 it was Annie’s 63 birthday. At exactly 4
p.m., Annie climbed into her ‘boat’. Several thousands of people watched her as the
river pushed her towards Niagara Falls.

The trip took less than 20 minutes. When they opened up the door at the bottom of
Niagara Falls, Annie was fine. She had a small cut on her head but that was all.
Annie made a little money from newspaper interviews. However, her manager stole*
her ‘boat’ and she spent this money trying to find him. Annie gave a few talks, but
sadly people soon forgot about her adventure. It didn’t make her rich or famous and
she was poor for the rest of her life. She died on April 30, 1921 when she was 83.
