Report On CT Control Wire Replacement
Report On CT Control Wire Replacement
TOMS GYELPOZHING
2023
Executive Summary:
This report outlines the successful completion of the replacement work involving the
transition from single-strand copper wire to multi strand copper control wire in Current
Transformers (CTs) at Kanglung Substation under TOMS Gyelpozhing. The replacement
aimed to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and overall performance of the CTs, ensuring
optimal functionality in measuring and monitoring electrical currents.
Introduction:
The existing single-strand control wire in the Current Transformers has been replaced with a
multi-strand wire as part of set target for TOMS Gyelpozhing in the year 2023. This upgrade
was deemed necessary to address issues related to signal integrity, electromagnetic
interference, and to meet the increasing demands of modern power systems.
Objectives:
The primary objectives were as follows:
a. Improve Signal Integrity: The multi-core copper wire was chosen to minimize signal
distortion, ensuring accurate and reliable current measurements.
b. Enhance Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): The new wiring configuration helps
reduce electromagnetic interference, ensuring the CTs operate effectively in diverse electrical
environments.
c. Increase Resilience: Multi-core copper wire provides redundancy, reducing the impact of a
single point of failure and enhancing the overall reliability of the CTs.
d. Facilitate Modern Power Systems: The upgrade supports the evolving requirements of
modern power systems, accommodating higher currents and varying load conditions.
Implementation:
After receiving materials and equipment from PD, team consisting of Kanglung maintenance
group and TOMS staffs were engaged in replacement of single-strand wire to multi strand
copper control wire in Current Transformers at Kanglung substation.
Each task commenced with a meticulous adherence to safety protocols, including safety
drills, Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and Tool Box Meeting (TBM). These preliminary measures
ensured that all team members were well-prepared and aware of potential hazards before
undertaking their assigned duties. By integrating safety drills, JSA, and TBM into the
workflow, the team prioritized the well-being of its own safety while also promoting a culture
of proactive risk management and incident prevention.

Following the acquisition of the planned work permit, the teams implemented a shutdown for
5MVA Transformer-II to replace the old CTs single strand control wire with a new multi-
strand control wire. The actual work commenced with the removal of old cables from the CTs
terminal box and the control/relay panel, followed by implementing a new cable layout,
scheduling, ferruling, crimping of thimbles, and cable wiring in the designated TB for both
ends, exercising extra caution. The task was successfully completed for Transformer-
II (Both side) and NCT too.

The multicore cable laying from the CT secondary to the CT box was successfully completed,
along with termination and dressing at the CT box, Control & Relay panel on the LV side of
the 2.5 MVA Transformer-II. Additionally, layout and termination of a 2-core cable for the
Earthing Transformer were carried out, followed by termination and dressing at the CT box
and control panel for the 2.5 MVA Transformer-I.
Figure 4: Laying multi strand from CT terminal box to control/relay panel for 2.5 MVA transformer
The laying of multi-strand copper cables from the CT secondary to the CT box has been
successfully accomplished for both the 2.5 MVA Transformer-I and the 132 KV Corlung-
Kanglung feeders. To facilitate this installation, a shutdown was implemented for the 132 KV
Corlung-Kanglung feeders. Following the cable laying process, termination work was carried
out at the CT secondary, CT box, and Control panel of both systems.

With completion of replacement of single core copper wire with multicore copper wire for
transfer bus, the target now stands achieved against replacement of single strand CTs control
wire with multi strand wire at Kanglung Substation for the year 2023.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the replacement of single-strand copper wire with multi-core copper wire in
the Current Transformers at Kanglung Substation has been successfully completed without
any accident and completed safely. The project has achieved its objectives of improving
signal integrity, enhancing electromagnetic compatibility, increasing resilience, and
accommodating the requirements of modern power systems.
