BA (JMC) 206: TELEVISION PROGRAMMING AND

PRODUCTION
Unit III [Production]

Idea to Screen (3)

Shooting the film: This stage of production is known as ‘point of no return’ or ‘principle
photography’ stage. After planning all the required things we start with the shoot and
from this stage a filmmaker cannot return back until the whole project is done. So
whatever pre-production work is done is implemented during the shoot. Director,
assistant director, line producer, production manager, cinematographer, art director and
every individual who are assigned with a job perform their duties. All the call sheets, cast
and crew sheets, shooting script, storyboard etc is referred to get a quick idea during the
shoot. While shooting, the director takes command of the production and guiding all
other hands deciding on the visual movement, dialogue delivery, placement of camera,
scenic beauty etc. which were chalked in the planning stage. All the department of the
production works closely in coordination with each other headed by the director. The
continuity of props, costumes, and actions are managed during the shoot. Most
importantly the assistant director keeps a detailed record of takes and shots in terms of
time code generated in the camera which are later used during the editing stage.

Previewing, structuring and editing : Previewing of raw footage is the first step before
giving a final shape to the story. The shots are taken several times and the main aim is to
select the best out of those. To get the best one, the process of previewing the footage is a
must. It further allows making an edit decision list (EDL) finalizing what all clips will be
used for the project. This process helps the filmmaker to analyze the video and audio
quality shot on location. All the bites, interviews and related visuals( for documentary)
are structured one after the another according to the script (if pre scripted) and according
to the idea (if post shoot script) later a final script is written. So while structuring the
elements of script there can be occasion when one may come up with more important
issues which may take the first seat then the initially thought important issue. So during
the previewing stage, simultaneously a paper cut is also prepared keeping in mind the
story line. Structuring and restructuring is a subjective matter and it depends on how a
filmmaker wants to present the film in front of the audience in a understandable manner.
While structuring the elements like bites, visuals, narrations, graphics etc. one after
another creates a flow and that is later designed in the editing table. The first step for
editing is selection and making an assembly. Later the selected visuals are trimmed to see
the tightness and looseness between the shots and sequences. One must know that every
scene has its mood and emotion and by managing the speed of the cuts we can create that
mood of slowness (where one is nostalgic) and fastness (where need to create confusion
or tension). Finally, all the scenes are assembled in the master sequence according to the
scene numbers and tweaking and sound treatment is given before finalizing the output.
