SOCIAL DANCING

Social Dances as Participation Dances

Participation dance, also known as group-participation dance or

audience participation dance, is a major category of dance forms or
dance styles based on purpose. The purpose of this type of dance is to
actively encourage participation in a group. The dancing that is
encouraged might be among those who would otherwise be passive
dance viewers, or it might be among dancers who are encouraged to
dance in a new way, or with new partners.

Participation dances are opposite the performance dances.

Performance dance (concert or theater dance) is a dance performed for
an audience. It is frequently performed in a theater setting, though this is
not a requirement, and it is usually choreographed and performed to set
music. Dancers here undergo rigid training unlike in social dancing.

A mixer dance (dance mixer) is a kind of participation game for

dancers that have some skills in social dancing. During a song or several
songs of a dance or dances well-known to participants (Waltz, Foxtrot,
West Coast Swing, etc.), at certain moments pairs exchange partners in a
random way. The rules of "mixing" vary. Some mixers have traditional
names. Mixers serve the purpose of introducing guests to one another
hence the name.

These dances are considered social dances since they serve the
purpose of participation rather than performance. They are danced
merely to socialize and for enjoyment. Social dances are recreational and
usually performed with a partner and in groups or as a community activity
for fun and enjoyment. Sometimes it does not require a partner but
simply a number of people in a group.

Ballroom Dancing

Ballroom dance is a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both

socially and competitively around the world. Because of its performance
and entertainment aspects, ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed on
stage, film, and television.
Ballroom dance may refer, at its widest definition, to almost any
recreational dance with a partner. However, with the emergence of dance
competition (now known as Dancesport), two principal schools have
emerged and the term is used more narrowly to refer to the dances
recognized by those schools.

The term 'ballroom dancing' is derived from the word ball which in
turn originates from the Latin word ballare which means 'to dance’. The
dance is named after a ballroom, a large room specially designed for such
dances.

In times past, ballroom dancing was social dancing for the

privileged, leaving folk dancing for the lower classes. These boundaries
have since become blurred. The definition of ballroom dance also
depends on the era: balls have featured popular dances of the day such as
the Minuet, Quadrille, Polonaise, Polka, Mazurka, and others, which are
now considered to be historical dance.

Ballroom Dancing of the Colonial Periods. Such dances reached the

Philippines during the Spanish colonial period and evolved into various
folk dances in the Christianized areas. During the American Period,
dances such as the Charleston, foxtrot and boogie woogie from the US
and the tango, rumba, mambo, conga, and cha-cha-cha from Latin
America were introduced.

Pop Dancing

Pop (popular), novelty or fad dances are social/participation

dances which are typically characterized by a short burst of popularity.
Some of them, like the twist, jerk, and hip hop dancing, have shown much
longer-lasting lives. They are also called dance fads or dance crazes.

As the pop music market got bombed in the late 1950s, dance fads
were commercialized and exploited. From the 1950s to the 1970s, new
dance fads appeared almost every week. Many were popularized (or
commercialized) versions of new styles or steps created by African-
American dancers who frequented the clubs and discothèques in major
U.S. cities like New York, Philadelphia and Detroit.

Among these were the Madison, "The Swim", the "Mashed

Potato", "The Twist", "The Frug" (pronounced /frʊɡ/), "The Watusi",
"The Shake" and "The Hitch hike". Many 1950s and 1960s dance crazes
had animal names, including "The Chicken" , "The Pony" and "The Dog".

Popular Dancing in the Philippines. Recording companies in the

Philippines starting in the late 70s like the WEA Records (now Universal
Records), Vicor Records, Dyna and Octo Arts started organizing their own
dance groups to promote newly-released records. The proliferation of
these groups promoting the latest dance tunes developed popular dances
like the Hustle, Swing, Salsoul, Freaky. Punk, Metallic Gigolo, Pop Dance
and the like.
