Roald Dahl is a British Novelist , Poet and Screenwriter born on the
13th of September 1916 . He is also a popular author for children’s literature and short stories. He was born in Wales to affluent immigrant Norwegian parents named Harald Dahl and Sofie Magdalene Dahl. Roald Dahl has five siblings in his family. He and his family spent most of their life in England. Roald Dahl spent two years at the Cathedral School in Llandaff, from the age of seven to nine. He then moved to St Peter's boarding school in Weston-super-Mare. At the age of 13 he moved on to Repton School in Derbyshire. Roald Dahl started his work life by working in Dar es Salaam , Tanganyika (now in Tanzania) from 1937 to 1939. However when World War 2 broke out, he had to be enlisted for the Royal Air Force. Roald Dahl became a fighter pilot. He was seriously injured in a crash landing in Libya. He also became a spy for the British government. Roald Dahl’s first ever written children’s book “Gremlins” is about some mischievous little creatures that were part of the Royal Air Force Folklore. The English Novelist C.S.Forester gave encouragement to Roald Dahl to write his first book ever, which was “A Piece of Cake” written on the 1st of August 1942. The book was about his wartime adventures. Charles Dickens,Rudyard Kipling are two of many people that influenced Roald Dahl on his journey of writing books. Most of the characters from Roald Dahl’s books are people who he knows very well such as the grandma in the book “Witches” is actually his mom and the small girl from the book “BFG” is actually his granddaughter Sophie. His works create incredible worlds and have shown the readers the immense power of language. “Charlie and the chocolate factory” is one of the most recognized books written by Roald Dahl. He was inspired to write the story because of experiences he had as a child when candy companies would solicit input from children about their products. “BFG”, “Matilda”, “Witches”, “The Enormous Crocodile” etc are four of many books written by Roald Dahl which were recognised by the whole world. Sadly, On 23rd of November 1990, Roald Dahl, one of the greatest storytellers for children in the 20th century, passed away at the age of 74.
