• If destination machine is
different from the
DSafeServer machine
• You will find the
DsafeClientSetup.exe in
‘C:\Program
Files\DSafe\SetupFiles\’.
• You will need to Run this
Setup on the machine
designated as Destination.
Configuration
Backup profiles are automatically generated for each drive of the machines on which you have
installed DSafe.
When DSafeServer Setup is done, by default, *.* is selected for backup. You can fine tune this to
suit your requirements. The better you fine tune, the better the backup performance, with respect
to size, speed and virus immunity. Once you have selected what you want to backup, you can
define that Backup Profile as a Template, so that when new machines are added, their Backups
Profiles will replicate the Template. Two templates one for C drive and Other Drives need to be
defined. This is to be selected from Setup | Server Setup.
Kindly note: Even if you select *.* not all data will be backed up. This is due to Default Excludes.
• Exclude Folder/Files: This is used to Exclude undesired files / Folders from being backed
up. Kindly note there are Several files excluded from backups already, due to Default
Excludes. In case you want to overrule the Default Excludes just for this Backup Profile,
then click the ‘Default Excludes’ link.
• [Active PST]: In case you want to backup only the PST files configured in MS Outlook
then you need to activate this option from the Configuration | Standard File Types.
• Type of Backup: If you want to take Full Backups daily then change the option to Full
Backup, else leave it at incremental.
• Retain Version: There are times when you do not want the latest backup, you may want to
roll back in time. This may be due to several reasons like correct file being accidentally
overwritten, Ransomware attack etc.
• Scheduling: This option is mostly at Scheduled. In rare cases you may want to do a backup
just once or you may want to backup on rare occasions, then you have the other options.
• Start From: In case you want few machines to start their backup after a few days you can
manage using this option.
• Backup Time and Try up to: This is the period wherein your backups will be attempted. If
the backup has begun it will continue beyond the Try up to time. For Large First-time
backups wherein, you keep the machine running 24hrs, please do not forget to make these
timings 00:15 to 23:55
• In rare situations one may want to backup data on alternate days, this can be achieved by
selecting alternate days of the week.
• Frequency of backups can be selected using ‘Repeat Backups’
• Advanced/Backup Open Files: This is essential for consistent backups of Database files /
PST files etc.
• Command prior to Backup/Command Post Backup: You can execute a BAT file just before
or after a backup.
• Do not Backup old files: This is to avoid backup of files older than, say 2 years.
• Refresh Backups After: Since DSafe5 does not refresh data by default you can use this
option.
• MS-SQL: DSafe takes backup of the MS-SQL backup files, this option needs to be directed
to the folder where the files are located.
Local Destinations
Most commonly used method of Storage is the Local Destination. The local destination can be
a Local Drive of a machine on which DSafeServer/DSafeClient is installed. It can also be a
Remote Mapped Drive of a NAS, with the Share used only through this specific machine.
If the DSafe Destination Machine is not shared and if it is not being used for any purpose other
than DSafe, it will be highly resistant to any form of Ransomware/Virus attack.
• Destination Identity: Will be filled Automatically during Save, you can change it to a
preferred name anytime.
• Destination Machine Name: Select the desired machine, if it is not visible in the Drop Down
install DSafeClientSetup.exe on that machine.
• Public Static IP: If this machine is to be accessed from the WAN, enter the public static IP.
• Local IP: At times the local machines cannot access certain machines within the LAN by its
name, therefore it is preferred to put the Local IP too. If this value moves to the Static IP
during Save it is okay.
• Destination Drive/Folder: You can specify the folder in which you want \DSafeBack\ to be
created in. In case of Remote Drive you will have to Map the Drive from DSafeServer | Setup
| Remote Mapped Drives. This is required because the backup takes place in the System
User, and the mapping you may see through windows Explorer will not apply for the System
User.
• Maximum Simultaneous Copy: By default, this is set to 5 and can be increased/decreased as
per the capacity of your Network so as to utilise your bandwidth optimally.
• Setup this destination for Disaster Recovery: Here you can select another Destination wherein
you want to replicate the backup. The destination you select should be used only for DR and not
for Direct Backups.
• Schedule Disaster Recovery: You can schedule the DR so that DR copy starts off, say, only at
night.
Shared NAS
Not recommended, kept for Legacy as there is
chance for the transfer of
Ransomware/Viruses. There is also chance of
Users of the Client machines getting access to
the Destination directly. All the same it is a
fast method of backup and has larger storage
capacities. It is not recommended for usage on
the WAN as it can be hacked as
communication is not under Secured layer. All
Fields to be entered similar to Local
Destination except for the Authentication.
Onedrive / Sharepoint
This destination will make use of the Cloud storage of Microsoft’s Onedrive/ Sharepoint. You
just need to click on New Authentication and you will be taken to Microsoft’s Authentication
screen. After correct Authentication you can select a Remote Subfolder or leave it blank. Also
leave Use Application Folder Blank as it has been kept for legacy only. Kindly note that
Sharepoint will use the Root Site only.
FTP/FTPS
This Destination can be either an FTPS provided by an ISP or your own NAS device with
FTP/FTPS activated. If using FTPS this can be also be done safely across the WAN. The Level of
Security will depend upon the NAS provider and not DSafe.
Email Configuration
Internet machine: In case your DSafeServer does not have connection to the internet, you need
to assign another machine within your network for essential communication.
Email Time: This is for sending Email of Previous day’s backup logs.
Send Backup Logs using DSafe VPS: The email content is transferred under SSL to DSafe’s Server,
which in turn sends the Email to the desired recipients. In case you need to use your own SMTP
account to send emails then you can drop down the Standard Defaults and select <specify>.
• System Backup Machine: In case your DSafeServer Machine crashes then you need a backup
of the DSafe Configuration. You need to remember this Machine Setting if every required.
• Send System Backup to DSafe VPS: This will additionally store your DSafe Configuration files
on our Server.
• Templates: You can define two templates, one for C: and another for any other Drive. New
machines File Include/Exclude will be picked up from these templates.
• Do not Update DSafe Versions Automatically: This option should not be ticked as this is
essential for healthy backups.
• Show User name in Email Log: When Machine names are similar and confusing you may want
User-Name attached.
• Auto Enable backup on installation: When DSafe is installed on a New Machine, its Backup
Profiles will be enabled and will start immediately. If your installation has multiple destinations
and your default destination is not the correct one for the new machine, then backups will
begin to the wrong destination, therefore you must use this option carefully.
• Default Destination: Any new machine being installed will be given this destination. Applies
only if there are more than one destination.
• Template for Default Client Configuration: In case you have done Client Setup to restrict
Restore from Client machines and want to avoid repeating the steps, then you can decide any
one machine as the Template for the Client Configuration.
• Super Server Address: This is if you have multiple DSafe Installations and want to view Backup
Activity at one Location whose Branch ID is ‘SUS’ For the Super Server leave the Address Blank
whereas in the other Locations mention Public Static IP of the Super Server.
• Scatter backups across: If several backups start at, say 10am, then the Destination machine
will have to give all these machines their respective Last File status. To avoid overcrowding of
messages we have given this option to Scatter the backups. You will need this if you are
continuously getting the message Destination Overloaded. The Hour part does not get altered
only the Minutes part changes.
Password Setting
• Passwords in DSafe have to be Alpha Numeric. Special characters are not permitted.
• Administrative Password Entry: Apart from entry into DSafeServer, this password is also used
during Restore of DSafeServer | Setup | Another User’s data. The default at setup is “DSafe”,
this should be changed after initial setup.
• DSafeServer | Setup | Standard Password for Backups: In case your data is lying in the Cloud
/ Data Centre etc, and you do not want any outsider to access the data, you can use this
password. Encryption method used is AES 256.
• DSafeClient | Tools | Password for Backups: Users who want to maintain the privacy of their
data can use this Password option. Encryption method used is AES 256. This will take
precedence over the Standard Password.
DSafeServer | Configuration | Client Configuration:
• Encryption of Backups: Administrator can make it mandatory for certain critical users to enter
their personal password. Administrator can also restrict a user from Entering a personal
password.
• Copy Priority Machine: Critical users can be given Copy Priority so that they are added directly
to the start of the File Transfer Queue.
• Use Server’s Datetime for Scheduling: By default, DSafe uses Server’s Datetime for End Point
backup’s scheduling. For End Points working in different time zones, you may want to untick
this option so that those machines will use their own Clock.
• Privileges: With this option you can decide if End Point user can Restore his own data or not.
You can also make DSafeClient silent on desired machines.
• Seed Data: This is for remote Machines with backups over 50GB etc. You can opt for seeding
wherein First Full backup will go to a Local Folder and same can be manually copied onto the
correct destination. Incremental backups will continue from there.
• Bandwidth Throttle: When backups going to OneDrive/Sharepoint need to be slowed down.
• Server Identity/ID (Local IP): This is filled by Default from the Settings during DSafe Server
Setup. In case you need to change it is better to contact DSafe Team, as any mistake will
disconnect the End Points from DSafeServer.
• Delete any existing Shadow Copy: Some applications maintain long term backups using
Microsoft’s Volume Shadow Copy. They may be active in your machine for months and may be
causing your machine to slow down. You have the option to delete any such backups prior to
our backup initiation. Deleting the older VSS will be your decision entirely.
• Microsoft Onedrive Folder: When your data is synchronised with the Onedrive cloud some
files may never reside on your HDD. In case you want a local backup then you need to select
the First Option. This flushing of the Cloud data onto your disk may take a few days.
• Email ID: User of the respective End Point can be sent a Email using this Email ID. Currently it
can be sent for users who are interrupting backups daily.
