1. Introduction
The term ‘bench work’ relates to the work performed by the
mechanic at the machinist’s bench with hand tools rather than
machine tools. Among of the operations that can be performed
at the bench such as marking, cutting, filing, chiseling, drilling,
sawing and fitting. The prime requirements for bench work are
should be strong, rigid and proper width and height that the
work can be performed conveniently. In other for those skills to
be mastered, students will be introduced to the basic
complement of hand tools commonly used in all branches of
mechanical technology such as bench vise, files, hacksaw,
center punch, and scriber.
2. Methodology
1. Use “L” square and appropriate file to obtain flat surface on
each side of the work piece (90˚ and 180°) until the
measurements about 100x70mm.
2. Use engineering square to check the surfaces, if rays of light
cannot be viewed between the work piece and the engineering
square, the surface is already flat.
3. Select the flat surface as the reference surface for marking
process
4. Mark the work piece at the edge with a dimension of 45˚ and
the side
with a size of (20x20) mm using high vernier caliper and plate
angle on the marking table.
5. Create the rounded curve using divider with a dimension of
radius 8 mm.
6. In order to make the cross section point line more visible, use
the center punch. This to ensure the measurement is
consistently correct.
7. Begin the removing process by cutting the unused material
using hacksaw only.
8. Smooth the edges of the work piece through filing.
9. Do the drilling work for through hole accordingly with a depth
of 5 mm as the drill sizes are M10x1.5 mm, M8x1.2 mm and
M6x1.0 mm.

10. Lastly, choose the right scriber and write your student ID on
the work piece.
3. Analysis
a. Basic tools for linear measurement are a ruler and vernier
caliper. It can be used to measure linear distance, circle
diameter and part thickness. Then, another important
measurement is angular measurement. Normally using ‘L’
square because it can serve several purposes including laying
out lines on metal and checking two surfaces for right angle (90
degrees).

attachable to a workbench and used to hold work piece
securely for sawing, chipping, filing and tapping operations. The
bench vise is made of casting iron except adjusting screw and
the mounting, made of harder steel. Normally work piece will
be clamped between softer materials to avoid damage. Bench
vise should be mounted correctly on the workbench where the
top of the vise jaws should be at elbow height.
d. Hand hacksaw is available with a fixed frame and adjustable
frame. The main components of hacksaw are handle, frame and
blade. A suitable blade pitch must be selected based on
material to be cut (for harder material, use the finer blade) and
thickness or shape of the material. Normally, the blade is made
from tool steel and high speed steel (HSS) due to their good
mechanical properties. The diagram shows example of hand
hacksaw and correct hand position when sawing.

4. Conclusion
Hence it was concluded that every operation needs bench
work to perform even the single task at critical case which was
done by use of hacksaw, scales, markers and files. After
completion of this report, we come to know about the different

components of workshop and description and procedure to use
different hand tools, machine tools etc. In order to make
different equipments like hacksaw, files, etc. Similarly we got
knowledge about different types of metals and their description
and their work in the workshop. Similarly, we become familiar
about marking, cutting, filing, chiseling, drilling, sawing and
fitting. Finally, we hope this report will prove much useful to us
in our current semester and hope that the report will be fruitful
for the future guidance and reference also.
