had unique and fascinating concepts. Certain dragons were
locked to one plane while others shifted between planes and
some controlled time. Some of these dragons were
reabsorbed into the current dragons we have but certain
dragons such as the generic chromatic dragons should be
their own entities.
Dragon Dilemma
So where are these dragons today? These fantastical beasts
that had such unique and fascinating concepts seem to have
been integrated back into the original chromatic dragons and
not their own standalone entities. For example, the Styx
Dragon which swam in the River Styx seems to have been re-
integrated right back into the Black Dragon.
From a gameplay designed standpoint, it makes sense to
not reprint almost identical material, unless its meant to be
reprinted, if that material already exists or it can easily be
tweaked to be that way by a Dungeon Master. For an
inexperienced Dungeon Master who just wants to run a
yellow dragon would almost never know to run a brass
dragon with yellow scales and a different breath weapon
especially when the information on that breath weapon
differs from source to source. Not to mention that yellow
dragons have access to some spells, some of which do not
even exist in the current edition of D&D. Furthermore, some
people will never hear of such amazing dragons such as a
radiant dragon or a lung dragon or even the family of gem
dragons.

much easier to differentiate and find information on than the
generic gray dragon.

The Reason Why:

This has happened becuase the shift from 3e
(Third Edition) to 4e (Fourth Edition) changed Gray
and Purple Dragons quite a bit. Fang Dragons and
Deep Dragons were the original Gray and Purple
Dragons but 4e changed the dragons to drastically
different creatures. This effected the Gray Dragon
much more than the Purple Dragon which stayed
mostly the same but did create essentially two
different dragons both referred to as "Gray
Dragons".

Why They Changed Them?

The working theory is as when D&D was acquired
by Wizards of the Coast (WoTC) from TSR (Tactical
Studies Rules) they had kept most of the lore the
same. But, as 4e came out and WoTC wanted to
create their own game with their own lore, thus the
split occured, leaving two very different dragons.

Lost Since 2nd Edition

Yellow dragons have not made an appearance in
Dungeons & Dragons since 2nd edition which was
a vastly different game. This more modern yellow
dragon has taken some liberties while still trying to
keep the same feel as the original yellow dragon.

Disclaimer: I have only ever played 5e but have wondered why we were so limited and then looked through the internet to see
all of what 5e is missing. Since, I have never personally played an older edition nor own the materials to recreate these older
dragons I'm using other sources. Furthermore, even if I did own the materials I'd need to learn the whole system just to
understand how to read their stat block and then update them.
