managed by a Japanese named
Ishiwara.

English was prohibited.

introduced but not
well-embraced by the Filipinos.

● The use of vernacular language


flourished.
Literary Forms ● Poetry

1. Haiku

Haiku Description:

It is a Japanese poem of 17 syllables


divided into three lines of 5,7,5.

Example:

Ulilang damo,
Sa tahimik na ilog,
Halika, sinta.
Tanka Description:

It is a Japanese poem of 31 syllables


divided into five lines of 5,7,5,7,7.

Example:

Araw na mulat,
Sa may gintong palayan,
Ngayong taglagas,
‘Di ko alam kung kelan,
Puso ay titigil na.
Tanaga Description:

It is a Filipino poem of 28 syllables


divided into four lines of 7,7,7,7.
It is written in the following rhyme
schemes: aaaa, aabb, abba, abab .

Example:

Sa gubat na madawag,
Tala’y mababanaag.
Iyon ang tanging hangad,
Buhay ma’y igagawad.
SWOT
Strengths
1. Use of vernacular language flourished.

2. Cultural consistency: Despite Japanese invasion,


Philippine literature reflected the durability of
Filipino culture by keeping traditional stories and
ideals.

3. Resistance Narratives: Writers used literature to


combat Japanese oppression, crafting narratives
that inspired the spirit of nationality and resistance.

4. The introduction of literary forms such as haiku and


tanka.

5. The spirit of nationalism strengthen.


Weaknesses 1. The Japanese language was introduced but not
well-embraced by the Filipinos.

2. Suppression of Freedom: Japanese censorship


limited the expression of free thought in literature,
hindering the development of diverse and critical
perspectives.

3. Cultural Appropriation: Some aspects of Philippine


literature may have been appropriated or distorted
under Japanese influence, impacting the
authenticity of certain literary works.
Opportunities 1. Post-War Reconstruction: After Japanese
occupation, Philippine literature had the opportunity
to rebuild and redefine itself, reflecting the struggles
and hopes of the nation during the post-war period.

2. Cross-Cultural Exchange: Interaction with Japanese


literature during the occupation could have provided
opportunities for cross-cultural exchange,
influencing the evolution of Philippine literary styles
and themes.

3. Adaptation and Innovation - writers explored new


forms and styles to convey messages indirectly ,
opening opportunities for innovative literary
expressions.
Threats
1. Changing of cultural values.

2. Loss of Cultural Identity: The dominance of


Japanese cultural influences and the
suppression of Filipino expression posed a
threat to the preservation of Filipino cultural
identity.
