What makes us a good team to solve the problem we chose?

We possess skills like communication, empathy, determination and a willingness


to research and analyze the problem chosen.
PROBLEM:
PERC-Perchloroethylene is a dormant solvent used for dry cleaning. exposure to
PERC, even for a brief time may cause headache, fatigue, confusion, dizziness,
nausea, and irritation of the eyes, mucus membranes, and lungs. Longer
exposure to perc can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, and mouth. It can also cause
damage to the liver and might even cause respiratory failure. We are looking for
reasons why it hasn't been replaced with an alternative safer method of dry
cleaning, why it is still in practice despite the harmful life threats it poses, and
also to come up with a safer and eco-friendly method of dry cleaning that
satisfies most of the requirements of dry cleaners and its customers.

We found that approximately 90% of the customers that we


interviewed are facing this problem.
EXISTING ALTERNATIVES:
CO2 Cleaning: Usage of pressurized liquid CO2 to dissolve oils, dirt, and fats in
clothing. This method does not create new CO2 at the end of cleaning and the CO2
is pumped back into a storage tank to be used again.
Wet Cleaning: Water+special non-toxic soaps and conditioners are used. This is a
more high-tech version of a home laundry machine keeping in mind the ph of a
stain and treating it accordingly. after washing, clothing is placed on tensioning
equipment to reshape them.
Silicone cleaning: Use of Siloxand D5 solution in place of PERC. this works
similarly to PERC to remove stains and odors from clothing, but it is not classified
as an air contaminant and is not linked to chronic illnesses.
K4 system: The solution is still in the works but it's designed so that it doesn't pose
a risk to air, water, soil or human health.
