A Fascinating Career
You are sitting in front of the television. Maybe you are watching a movie or
playing a typical computer game. The characters look so real. They move like real
people, but they aren’t real. You wonder ... how does it happen?
In the past, most special effects were very difficult to do. Nowadays, most special
effects are done using computers. Who makes it all happen? Computer animators,
of course! A computer animator is a person who makes pictures move.
If you are interested in computer animation as a career, there are several things
you must do. First, most computer animators should have a bachelor’s degree. You
could major in art or media. Next, you may want to go to an animation school for a
training program. Then, decide on your specialty. You could specialise in web
animation, video game animation, advertising services, or animation for films.
Computer animation requires artistic skills such as creativity, in addition to
technical skill. Computer animators also have to spend a lot of time thinking about
small details. They may also have to work with tight deadlines which means they
have to work quickly to finish their products. However, there is a lot of competition
for jobs because many people want to become computer animators. It is a
challenging career, but it is never boring!

Reading
1- Read the words in the box. Use a dictionary to check the meaning of any
words you do not know.
Significance of Nature
Our relationship with nature has historically been one of imbalance
and overuse. Nearly every step in human history has unfortunately been
accompanied with a leap in environmental degradation.
Every form of nature, for instance, the plants, animals, rivers,
mountains, moon, and more holds equal significance for us. Absence of
one element is enough to cause a disaster in the functioning of human
life.
We achieve our healthy lifestyle by eating and drinking healthy food
which nature gives us. Similarly, it provides us with other life needs.
Rainfall and sunshine, the two most important elements to survive are
derived from nature itself.
Further, the air we breathe and the wood we use for various purposes
are also gifts. However, with technological advancements, people are
not paying attention to nature. The need to protect and
balance the natural assets is rising day by day which requires immediate
attention.

clear and stated
Adapting to your environment directly in the text.
Implicit
An adaptation is a change in the organism’s body or
information isn’t
behaviour that helps it to survive. It can be structural, which
stated directly, but
means it is related to a physical part of the organism. An
implied and hinted
example of a structural adaptation is the way some plants
at in the text.
have adapted to life in dry, hot deserts. They have adapted to
this climate by storing water in their short, thick stems and
leaves.
An adaptation can also be behavioral, affecting the way an
organism responds to its environment. Building nests,
communicating with one another, ways of finding food, and
seasonal migration are examples of behavioural adaptation.
For example, gray whales migrate thousands of kilometers
every year to the warm waters off the coast of Mexico.
Animals can react to climate change in only three ways: they
can move, adapt or die. Because moving isn’t always a
simple solution, in the harsh cold climate of Alaska, the
animals have learnt to adapt to the weather by storing food
in their body and protecting themselves from the cold with
thick furs. Human inhabitants in Alaska have also learnt to
cope with the environment by building shelters that hold the
heat inside, and yet do not allow the structure to melt.
15
a- The main idea of the text is:
1. not all organisms have the ability to adapt to their environment.
2. adaptation is a way to cope with conditions that organisms have no control on.
3. humans in Alaska have adapted their lifestyle to be suitable for harsh conditions.
b- What are the two types of adaptations? Give examples.
c- What does the underlined word ‘’themselves’’ refer to?

die.’’ In your opinion, what is the best way to react when you face a problem?

Our Story
A few years ago, a committee headed by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah
became the core team to develop an idea about the story of Jordan in a new way;
a new modern museum. The Jordan museum is a dream that comes true. The
Jordan Museum intends to enable its guests to experience Jordanian culture and
history in a lively way. It presents the Kingdom’s history and heritage as part of
the story of Jordan’s past, present, and future. It’s rough and smooth stones stand
for the past and present while the future is represented by glass.
The museum is located in the Ras Al-Ein area, near downtown Amman. It is the
largest museum in Jordan. The country’s most important archaeological findings
are found in this museum. It was officially opened in 2014 CE. Animal bones
dating back to 1.5 million years are hosted in the museum. What makes the mu-
seum special is that the collections (over 2,000 artifacts) are put chronologically
(arranged in the order in which they happened) and thematically (each group of
collections is based on a certain subject).
