G Reading: Recognizing topic sentences

Six sentences are missing from this text. Choose the correct sentences for each
gap. There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.

Words and pictures

Subtitles – the words that translate what is said in a film

into a different language and appear at the bottom of the
screen – are becoming more common as people watch
film and TV content from all over the world, but that’s
not their only function.
1

Creating subtitles for film or TV requires a lot of skill. In most

countries only two lines are allowed on the screen, with a limit of 37
characters. These stay on the screen for between two and six
seconds. This length is really important. If it’s too short, people won’t
understand; if it’s too long, people will start reading the text again or
get annoyed.
2

Traditionally, subtitles are used with foreign-language material, or to

help viewers who have difficulties hearing. However, in recent years
people have started using them in various ways to improve their
viewing experience. Recent statistics suggest that on some websites
85% of videos are watched without sound. This means that subtitles
are now part of everyday entertainment.
3

Subtitles mean that people don’t miss anything. Many people watch
videos on smartphones while travelling to work. Subtitles are often
switched on to make sure they don’t miss any important dialogue on
noisy public transport. Also, many young people report using
subtitles as a way of following dialogue as they multi-task. For
example, they might be watching a film while discussing it on social
media.

4

As people sometimes watch a whole series in a couple of days,

subtitles can be a useful tool for working out complex plots and
relationships. Many viewers report using ‘closed-caption subtitles’,
which give names as well as dialogue, to help them follow stories
where there are lots of characters.
5

Subtitles also have a benefit for younger viewers. Watching films and
videos might not be everyone’s idea of a suitable learning
experience, but there is growing evidence that using subtitles helps
develop reading skills. As children watch and read, they become
better at matching spelling to sounds, increase their vocabulary and
improve reading speed.
6

Subtitles don’t solve all communication issues. Sometimes people

question how good the translations are. One challenge is that many
programmes come from East Asia where very specific words are used
to refer to people based on their relationships. Often these are badly
translated or there isn’t enough detail in the subtitle for audiences to
understand why a word has been used. As programmes become
more global, this is a problem to solve.

A They can also be helpful to keep track of who is who in a story.

B Creating subtitles for film or TV requires a lot of skill.
C Many viewers complain that subtitles distract them from the images.
D Not all communication issues are solved by subtitles though.
E Subtitles help people stay focussed in busy environments.
F The role of subtitles has been changing lately.
G Subtitles will clearly become even more important in the future.
H Subtitles bring an extra benefit for younger viewers.
