Relationship Between Teacher Use of Exclusionary Discipline and Using a Problem-Solving
Approach to Conflict with Eighth Grade Students
Rachel Austin, Becki Zeidler
University St. Catherine University
https://sophia.stkate.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1430&context=maed
II. Brief account of IMRAD contents
III. How was the thesis impact practice and dissemination plan in relation to your (own) present
institutional/ industrial situation
IV. As future Administrator of school/industry practitioner, Address the gap of the study by applying
learned administrative and supervision principles/ approaches.

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between the use of exclusionary
discipline by teachers and their implementation of a problem-solving approach to conflict
resolution with grade 8 students. This study addresses the issue of discipline in the classroom,
specifically focusing on the use of exclusionary discipline and its potential effects on implementing
a problem-solving approach to conflict resolution. The research design utilizes a qualitative
approach, employing assessment and observation methods. Participants will complete a series of
assessments that assesses their frequency and methods of implementing exclusionary discipline
and problem-solving approaches. Additionally, classroom observations will be conducted to
gather data on the actual implementation of these disciplinary practices. The collected data was
analyzed using statistical techniques such as correlations and regression analysis to assess the
relationship between teacher use of exclusionary discipline and the adoption of a problem-solving
approach. The findings indicated the frequency and effectiveness of different disciplinary
strategies, providing insights into their impact on student outcomes.

2. Research Application

1.) I. Describe the importance of research in relation to your field of specialization to

your current degree.
A thesis plays a crucial role in education as it fosters critical thinking, research skills, and
intellectual development. It requires students to delve deep into a subject, analyze information, and
construct a coherent argument. It promotes independent learning, encourages originality, and
prepares individuals for academic and professional pursuits.
II. What effect does research have something to do with your present teaching/job
assignment or future issues in your profession?
As a teacher, the effect of a thesis is twofold. Firstly, it helps you formulate clear learning objectives
and guide your instruction. Secondly, it encourages critical thinking and research skills in students,
fostering their ability to analyze, synthesize, and present information effectively. Ultimately, it
enhances the overall educational experience.
III. How would you strengthen research in your chosen field?
In order to strengthen research in my chosen field, I would prioritize collaboration and
knowledge sharing among researchers. I would encourage open access publications and
data sharing, promote interdisciplinary research, and support the development of research
networks and partnerships. Additionally, securing funding and resources for research projects
would be crucial in advancing the field.
3. Discuss the following questions by citing an example and considering the 5w’s (What,
who, why, where and when) and 1 H’s (how) answers.

1. Qualitative Research design

Qualitative analysis refers to the process of interpreting and understanding data or information through a
subjective and non-numerical approach. One common technique used in qualitative analysis is the 5W and
1H framework. The 5W and 1H method involves asking a series of questions: Who, What, When, Where,
Why, and How. These questions help researchers gather and analyze relevant information to gain a
comprehensive understanding of a phenomenon or problem.

For Example, Qualitative research design: A study exploring the experiences (what) of elderly individuals
(who) living in rural areas (where), aiming to understand their perceptions (why) of healthcare access (how),
using in-depth interviews (method) to gather rich, subjective data (what).

2. Quantitative Research design

The 5W and 1H framework provides a structured approach to understand the key components of a
quantitative research design. By considering these fundamental questions, researchers can enhance the
clarity and coherence of their studies and ensure that all important aspects are adequately addressed. For
example, a Quantitative research design investigates the relationship between the number of hours
students spend studying (who), their final exam scores (what), and factors like motivation, demographics,
and study techniques (why). The research method involves collecting numerical data (how) through
surveys and conducting statistical analyses to identify patterns and correlations.

Part II – Title Proposal ( 40 pts.) In a separate sheet.
