READING REVIEW
Practice 15. Read the article and choose the correct answers.
Y ou may not know it, but you have always been a member of some specific social groups since
you were born. Everyone has. Where you live is your community of place. Your English class?
That’s your community of purpose. But what about your job? That one involves a whole mix of
challenges. It’s your community of practice.
Let’s say you work in an office, and you have a problem with the meetings. There are too many
meetings, and they take a long time. So, you and two colleagues decide to speak to your manager
about how meetings are organized. You decide that the “best practice” is to have fewer meetings
and to have a time limit of one hour. You’ve looked at the facts, the options, and you’ve just solved
a problem. Welcome to a community of practice.
A community of practice isn’t necessarily your entire company. In the last example, it was you and
some colleagues.
Practice 16. Read the article. Summarize how advertisers reach a particular target group. Write one
sentence for each step in the process.
S ometimes, a business has a product that it wants to sell to a certain group of people. For
example, there is no point advertising a new car to people who don’t drive. Governments,
too, sometimes want to get information to a specific group. This might be information about
children’s health that they want to give to parents. In both cases, it would be a waste of money to
inform everyone. It’s better to aim your message at the people you want to reach. How do you do
that?
First of all, it’s important to clearly identify the group of people you want to reach. Is it parents? Is
it teenagers? Is it homeowners? When you have a clear idea of your target group, then you can
think about how to reach people in the group.
Second, you need to think about how to communicate with that group. Teenagers and young
adults spend time on social networks. That might be the best way to reach them. It might not
work so well for senior citizens or other groups.
Third, you need to express your message in the right way. With professional people, you may want
to use serious language. With teenagers, you may want to use slang or informal language.
When you aim your message at a clear target group and use the right form of communication,
your message is more effective.
