3. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
It was late in the evening on Thursday when mother was seriously ill at home. Mr. Chibisa
decided to go and pick her up so that he could take her to the hospital. He jumped into his car
and drove to his car and drove to his brother’s house. From there the two drove home.

As they were going home the lights of their car fell on four men beating a man. When the
four men saw the car, they dumped the man on the road and ran away. Mr. Chibisa and his
brother stopped and picked the man into a car. They drove the nearest village and hooted the
horn of the car several times, but nobody woke up. They came out of the car and knocked on
the door of the house, but no one answered. They walked to several houses but still no one
opened his/her house. It was almost half past twelve in the night. Mr. Chibisa and his brother
did not know what to do. They had a bruised passenger in a car who they did not know. The
passenger did not answer any of their questions. Mr. Chibisa and his brother realized that the
best way to help the passenger was to leave him at the hospital but the hospital was eighty-
five kilometers in the opposite direction. So they decided to pull the passenger out of the car
and dump him at the Veranda of one of the houses in the village. He shouted to the owner of
the house, “I have left a man on your veranda.” Then they jumped into the car and left the
silent village.

The battered man was not attended to by any of the villagers. Everyone kept quiet and slept in
his house. Early in the morning, the owners of the houses did not bother to check the
conditions of the man on their veranda.

They picked up their Hoes and Axes to their garden. The other villagers heard that the car
which drove in the night had dropped a visitor at Mr. Baka’s house. However, no one came to
see the visitor. Everyone went to do the activities they had planned. When Mr. Baka came
back from his garden and found a visitor to the village head to report about the midnight
visitor. The village head sent his advisors, when the advisors came they agreed to report the

matter to the Police. After that they took the midnight visitor to hospital where he died two
days later. Up to now the Police are still investigating the incident.
