PROCESS DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR

First Order System

&
First Order Plus Dead Time
(FOPDT) system
Prepared by: Zalizawati Abdullah
First Order System
 K 
Y (s) =   X ( s ) in s domain: 1st order transfer function
s + 1 
Process characteristics:
K = process gain, - model parameter that describes how much the
measured output (Y) changes in response to changes in the input (X)
 = time constant, – value of time which the response is 63.2%
complete
First Order Plus Dead Time System
 Ke  − st 0
Y (s) =   X (s) in s domain: FOPDT transfer function
 s + 1 

Process characteristics:
K = process gain, - model parameter that describes how much the
measured output (Y) changes in response to changes in input (X)
 = time constant, – value of t which the response is
63.2% complete
t0 = time delay or dead time, – delay from when an input (X) signal is
issued until when the output (Y) begins to respond
Objectives of this lab work:

1. to simulate the First Order System in Simulink

(MATLAB) to obtain the process response

2. to study the effect of process characteristics to the

process response
Effect of process characteristics (1 st Order system)
• To study the effect of process characteristics:
• vary the transfer function parameters ( K &  )
• change only ONE parameter at a time
 1 
• To study the effect of process gain (K ) Y (s) =   X ( s )
 s + 1 
• the gain value is changed to 3, 5,7 and -2
• The time constant value is fixed at 1s

• To study the effect of time constant, ( )

• the time constant value is changed to 3, 5,7 and 9s
• The process gain value is fixed at 1

Attention!!
Your task is to compare the
process output response
at different process gain
and time constant values
Effect of process characteristics (FOPDT)

• To study the effect of process characteristic:

• vary the transfer function parameter, t 0
• change only ONE parameter at a time  Ke 
− st 0
Y (s) =   X (s)
• To study the effect of dead time/time delay  s + 1 
• the dead time is changed to 3, 5,7 and 9s
• The process gain value is fixed at 1
• and time constant value is fixed at 1s
