[22-23] Week 8

Exercise 1. Let’s warm up with a few simple questions.

Form pairs and ask each other the following questions. Also, ask any other additional question
you may come up with.

Exercise 2. Conversation in pairs: future expectations.

Form pairs and ask each other the following questions. Also, ask any other additional question

Where do you see yourself in five or ten years? Regarding your personality, would you like to
remain like you are now or is there anything you aspire to change? And what about your
relationships? Would you like to be in a relationship, single, married, with children…?

Do you believe things you like in life can remain like they are for a long time (e.g. habits, friends,
romantic relationship)? So far, have things in your life been more static or more dynamic?

Are you scared of changes or do you adapt well to them? Is there anything in particular you would
not like to change? Is there anything you can do now to make it stay like that for a long time?

Do you feel motivated, upset or jealous when you compare yourself to others who have now what
you wish to get? Do you often get the feeling that what others obtained was easier for them
because life was easier before?

How do you cope with the loss? Do you tend to ignore the bad aspects of an uncertain future or
do you, on the contrary, think and psychologically rehearse sad scenarios?

Which things make you feel hope for the future? What do you believe the future generations will
be or look like?

Where would you be living if you had the means or the chance to go anywhere? Would you go
there alone or in company of others? Would you come back at some point?

Discuss your predictions about the following aspects for the next decade: the food industry, the
fashion industry, the entertainment industry, social media, education, learning abilities and
disorders (e.g. dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD…), animal rights,
equality of sexes

Exercise 3. Conversation in groups.

In a bigger group, discuss the following issues.

What is your perception about the loss of values these days? Are you concerned about the isolating
and individualistic tendencies? Which living standards do you think will be prominent in the near
and distant future?

THINK ABOUT/OF
The phrasal verb “think of/about” means to consider something carefully.
• Debora is thinking about moving to Australia.
It also means to remember.
• Laura often thinks of her ex-boyfriend.
THINK AHEAD (TO)
When you make plans and arrangements for the future, you think ahead to it.
• It’s time to think ahead to our trip to Spain.
THINK FOR YOURSELF
If you think for yourself, then you have an opinion of your own regardless of what other people might say or think
about it.
• You shouldn’t care about what other people think, you should think for yourself.
THINK SOMETHING OUT
To think something out means to consider something carefully and thoroughly.
• You need to think things out if you want to go to college.
THINK SOMETHING THROUGH
To think carefully about the outcome of your doings.
• After his illness, Harry took some time off to think things through.
THINK OVER
Its meaning is similar to “think through” and “think out”. It refers to careful planning and considering before making
any decisions.
• I need some peace and quiet to think things over.
THINK BACK (TO)
If you think back to something, then you remember or think about something from the past.
• I enjoy thinking back to my childhood when I was worriless and happy.
THINK UP
This phrasal verb means to invent something in your head, especially excuses.
• You have to think up a good excuse for not attending the meeting.
FIGURE OUT
To figure out something means to be able to understand the problem and/or solve it.
• We have to figure out the cause of why the system is crashing in order to fix it.
WORK OUT SOMETHING
To work out something means to think about a problem and develop a strategy to solve it.
• Scientists and experts have been trying to work out the solution to global warming for decades.
PUT HEADS TOGETHER
If you put your heads together, you are brainstorming a problem.
• We should put our heads together and try to find a way out of this situation.
MULL OVER
Mull over means to spend some time thinking about something.
• Sandra mulled over different solutions for her problem.
MUSTER UP
If you muster up, you try to produce courage or energy to accomplish something.
• John mustered up the courage to ask his boss for a promotion.
SLEEP ON SOMETHING
Sleep on something means to wait and think about things before making a decision.
• I can’t make a decision now so I’ll sleep on it and let you know tomorrow.
