Chapter 2: Motion in a Straight Line Assignment 1

1. A car travels a distance A to B at a speed of 60 km/h and returns to point A at a speed of 40 km/h. (a) What is the average speed for the whole journey?
(b) What is the average velocity?
2. A motor cyclist moving on a circular track of radius 100 m completes one revolution in 4 minutes. What is his (i) average speed (ii) average velocity in
one full revolution?
3. A man travels along a straight road for the first half with a velocity v1 and the second half with velocity v2. What is his mean velocity?
4. The position of a moving particle is given as x = 6 + 18t + 9t2 (x in m and t in s). What is its velocity at t =2s?
5. The v-t graphs of two bodies A & B make angles of 30o and 60o with the time axis. Find the ratio of their acceleration.
6. The displacement of an object along X –axis is given by x = 3 – 8 t + 7 t2. Find its velocity and acceleration at t = 2s.
7. Which among the two; velocity or acceleration decides the direction of motion of a body? Give an example.
8. An object is in uniform motion along a straight line, draw the position time graph for the motion of object, if
(i)x0 = positive, v = negative but constant. (ii) both x0 and v are negative and v is constant.
(iii) x0 = negative, v = positive and constant. (iv) both x0 and v are positive and v is constant. (where x0 is position at t = 0.)
9. Draw (a) acceleration - time (b) velocity - time (c) position - time graphs representing motion of an object under free fall. Neglect air resistance.
10. The velocity time graph for a particle is shown in figure. Draw acceleration time graph from it. v
(m/s)

11. For an object projected upward with a velocity v0 , which comes back to the same point after some time, draw
(i) Position-time graph (ii) Velocity time graph (iii) Acceleration-time graph.
12. If a body starts from rest and travels 5m in 6th second, then what is its acceleration?.
13. A ball is thrown upwards from the top of a tower 40 m high with a velocity of 10 m/s, find the time when it strikes the ground (g = 10 m/s2).
14. A particle experiences a constant acceleration for 20 second after starting from rest. If it travels a distance s1 in first 10 seconds and distance s2 in the
next 10 seconds, then what is the relation between s1 and s2?

Write the correct option for the following:

15. The coordinates of object with respect to a frame of reference at t = 0 s are (- 1, 0, 3). If t = 5 s, its coordinates are (- 1, 0, 4), then the object is in
(a) motion along Z-axis (b) motion along X-axis (c) motion along Y-axis (d) rest from t =0s to =5s
16. Which of these graphs represent a body moving with increasing velocity?

17. The displacement of a particle starting from rest (at t = 0) is given by s = 6t -t2 + 3 . The time in seconds at which the particle will attain zero velocity
again is
(a) 2 (b) 4 (c) 6 (d) 3
18. A particle is at x = 3 units at t = 0. It starts moving from rest with a constant acceleration 4 ms-2. The position of the particle at t = 3 s is
(a) x = + 21units (b) x = + 18 units (c) x = -21units (d) None of these
19. A person is moving with a velocity of 10 m/s towards north. A car moving with a velocity of 20 m/s towards south crosses the person. The velocity of
car relative to the person is
(a) -30 m/s (b) +20 m/s (c) 10 m/s (d) -10 m/s
