At this stage the students have got over their stage fright and the stage is set for further niceties of speech craft
to be inculcated into the speakers. Stage fright, nervousness, distracting mannerisms are got rid of; now it’s a
case of building up gradually. Since the students have had five years of basic speech training when they reach
this level, they are now given the freedom of choosing their own topics. The students have to prepare their own
speeches. No set speeches are given by the teacher except to the students who need special guidance (on very
rare occasions). Topics are suggested only in case a student is unable to select one on his or her own. Students
need to be monitored and guided in the preparation of their speeches. Special care has to be taken in order to
correct the usage of language and vocabulary. Corrections of the speech manuscripts are made well ahead of
the day the students are expected to deliver their speeches
Aims
• Better organization of speech topics with an
opening, a body and a conclusion.
• Training on the use of body language in
enhancing the spoken word. Gestures, Facial
Expressions and Eye Contact.
• Short Impromptu Speeches.
• Round Robin.
• Training of School Assembly Speakers

● Warm up exercises
A sequence of exercises to develop relaxation, extend vocal range, support good breathing, posture,
develop team spirit and enhance creativity.
● Poetry
All poems and follow up activities found in the child’s Speech and Drama book will be completd
within the year.
Poetry is used in the class in such a manner that the performance lends audience impact. Students are
encouraged to explore the context literally and artistically so that the meaning is appreciated and the
content experienced in terms of a performance. Group ensemble, rhythmic chants, music, movement,
song and dance are all synchronized as and when required. A wide range of poetry is used at this level
so that at least the basics of lyrical narrative and dramatic verse are experienced. Some literary back
ground knowledge is shared with the students so the work of the poet is appreciated.
● Theory
Understanding theory is an integral part speech and drama and its practical usage is incorporated in all
areas of the subject matter. The technical aspects of the theories used in speech and drama have been
incorporated into the child’s speech and drama books and will be taught to the children accordingly.
- Resonance - Articulation
As we would like all students to understand the context of the work done in class a “spotlight” on a few
famous poets, writers and other concepts relating to the field of speech and drama will be explored.
- Greek Theatre - Stage Make up
● Sight Reading
Reading in terms of a performance is encouraged using the text for the grade.
Activities that are devised from the reader to lend to creative writing and extend the students’ vocabulary are
found in the speech and drama books and will be completed within the year. Sight reading is assessed individually.
The Speech and Drama syllabus ensures that all students will be able to sit for one of the individual
examinations on offer at the Festival of Arts conducted by Lyceum Assessments. Any student
interested may opt to sit for such an exam. They will receive guidance and advise from their respective Speech
and Drama teacher.
Students will be at the discretion of their teacher selected on merit to sit for a group examination conducted by
the Festival of Arts.
- All Festival of Arts examinations are OPTIONAL.
- The syllabus will be uploaded in due course :
