UNIT -IV
TOPIC: HEAT EXCHANGERS, BOILING & CONDENSATION
1. Explain the regimes of pool boiling.
2. In an industry 0.6 kg/Sec of oil (Cp=2.5 kJ/kg-K) is to be cooled in a counter flow heat exchanger
from 110 ºC to 35 ºC by the use of water entering at 20 ºC. The overall heat transfer coefficient is
1500 W/m2-K. Presuming the exit water temperature should not exceeds 80 ºC, using NTU method,
Calculate:
a. Water flow rate
b. surface area required
c. The effectiveness of heat exchanger
3. The outer surface of a vertical tube of 1.5 m length and outer diameter of 10 cm is exposed to saturated
steam at atmospheric Pressure and is maintained at 50 ºC by the flow of cool water through the tube.
Calculate the rate of heat transfer to the coolant and the rate of condensation of steam. The properties
of saturated vapour at atmospheric pressure are as follow. Density = 0.596 Kg/m3, latent heat of
condensation is 2257 KJ/Kg. The properties of water are p=975 Kg/m3,µ = 375 X 10-6
W.Sec/m2, K=0.668 W/m-K.
4. Derive an expression for effectiveness of a counter flow heat exchanger using NTU method.
5. Refrigeration is designed to cool 250 kg/h of hot liquids of heat 3350 J/kg k at 120 ºC using a parallel
flow arrangement. 1000 kg/h of cooling water is available for cooling purpose at a temperature of
10 ºC. If the overall heat transfer co-efficient is 1160 W/m2K and the surface area of the heat
exchanger is 0.25 m2. Calculate the outlet temperature of the cooled liquid and water and also
effectiveness of the heat exchanger.
6. Water at a rate of 4080 kg/h is heated from 35°C to 75°C by the oil of Cp 1.9 kJ/kgK.The heat
exchanger is a double pipe counter flow. Oil enters at 110°C and leaves at 75°C. Determine: i) mass
flow rate of oil, ii) area of the heat exchanger to handle heat duty if the overall heat transfer coefficient
is 320 W/m2K.
7. A counter flow heat exchanger has an overall heat transfer coefficient of 225W/m2K and a surface
area of 33m2. The hot fluid [cp=3.56kJ/kg K] enters at 94 0C and flows at the rate of 2.52kg/s. The
cold fluid [cp=1.67kJ/kg K] enters at 16 0C and flows at rate of 2.27kg/s. Determine the rate of heat
transfer.
8. A heated polished copper plate is immersed in a pool of water boiling at atmospheric pressure. If the
surface temperature of the copper plate is maintained at a temperature of 1130C , determine the
surface heat flux and the evaporation rate per unit area of the plate.
9. Derive the expression of LMTD for parallel flow heat Exchanger.
