Kamala Nehru

Kamala Nehru (née Kaul; ; 1 August 1899 – 28 February 1936) was an Indian independence
act ivist and t he wife of Jawaharlal Nehru, t he first prime minist er of India. Their daught er Indira
Gandhi was t he first female prime minist er of India.

Early life and marriage

Kamala Kaul was born on 1 August 1899 t o Rajpat i and Jawahar Mull At al-Kaul, who were from a
Kashmiri Pandit family of Old Delhi.[1]: 9–11 She was t he eldest child and had t wo brot hers, Chand
Bahadur Kaul and t he bot anist , Kailas Nat h Kaul, and a sist er, Swaroop Kat hju.

Kamala married Jawaharlal Nehru at t he age of 16 [1] at t he hist oric Haskar Haveli in Sit aram
Bazar.[2] Her husband went t o a t rip in t he Himalayas short ly aft er t heir marriage.[3] In his
aut obiography, Jawaharlal Nehru, referring t o his wife, st at ed "I almost overlooked her."[3] Nehru
gave birt h t o a girl in November 1917, Indira Priyadarshini, who lat er succeeded her fat her as
prime minist er and head of t he Congress part y.[3]

Contribution to the Indian Independence Movement

Kamala was involved wit h t he Nehrus in t he nat ional movement , t hat she emerged int o t he
forefront . In t he Non Cooperat ion movement of 1921, she organized groups of women in
Allahabad and picket ed shops selling foreign clot h

and liquor. When her husband was arrest ed t o
prevent him delivering a "sedit ious" public speech,
she decided t o go in his place and read it out t o a
large crowd of onlookers (filled wit h her
support ers). The Brit ish soon realized t he t hreat
t hat Kamala Nehru posed t o t hem and how
popular she had become wit h women's groups all
over India. She was arrest ed on t wo addit ional
occasions for her involvement in Independence
st ruggle act ivit ies, along wit h Sarojini Naidu,
Kamala Nehru's mot her, and many ot her women of
t he Indian freedom st ruggle.[4][5] During t his period Undated photograph

Kamala Nehru died from t uberculosis in Lausanne, Family Nehru–Gandhi


Swit zerland, on 28 February 1936, wit h her family
daught er and mot her-in-law by her side. During her
last few years, Kamala Nehru was frequent ly ill and t aken t o a sanat orium in Swit zerland for
t reat ment , t hough she ret urned t o India as she got well. In early 1935, as Kamala Nehru's healt h
again det eriorat ed, she was t aken t o Badenweiler in Germany by Subhash Chandra Bose and
admit t ed t o a sanat orium for t reat ment . Her husband Jawaharlal Nehru was in prison in India at
t hat t ime. As her healt h worsened, Jawaharlal Nehru was released from prison and rushed t o
Germany in Oct ober 1935. While Nehru's healt h improved init ially, it st art ed t o det eriorat e again in
1936, and she died on 28 February. In t he prologue t o his aut obiography, in a chapt er added aft er
Kamala's deat h, Jawaharlal Nehru recount s t hat he was devast at ed and remained in mourning for
mont hs.[7]
