A. Problem Statement

Design an HVAC (cooling) system for a building floor in Karachi, Pakistan. The space should include

at least three zones, such as offices, lecture rooms, or laboratories. The system must adhere to

ASHRAE standards to ensure indoor air quality and thermal comfort.

B. Tasks Related to HVAC System Design

I. Construction Plan

Sketch the Construction Plan:

- Include dimensions of all subspaces (rooms, windows, doors).

- Identify directions and unconditioned spaces.

- Mention the exact location (e.g., Karachi, Pakistan).

II. Selection of Input Parameters and Operating Schedule

Outdoor Design Values:

- Summer dry-bulb temperature: 35°C

Page 1

- Mean coincident wet-bulb temperature: 27°C

- Daily average temperature range: 10°C

Indoor Design Temperature:

- Occupied: 24°C

- Unoccupied: 28°C

Building Materials:

- Walls: Concrete (thickness: 0.2 m, density: 2400 kg/m³, specific heat: 0.84 kJ/kg·K, thermal

resistance: 0.15 m²·K/W)

- Roof: Insulated concrete (thickness: 0.15 m, density: 2200 kg/m³, specific heat: 0.84 kJ/kg·K,

thermal resistance: 0.2 m²·K/W)

- Floors: Tile (thickness: 0.02 m, density: 2300 kg/m³, specific heat: 0.84 kJ/kg·K, thermal resistance:

0.12 m²·K/W)

Windows:

- Glazing: Double-glazed, low-E coating

- Frame: Aluminum with thermal break

- Internal shading: Blinds

- External shading: Overhangs

Doors:

- Type: Solid wood door

Lighting, Equipment, and Occupants:

- Overhead lighting: LED fixtures

- Task lighting: Desk lamps

- Electrical equipment: Computers, projectors

- Occupants: 1 person per 10 m²

Operating Schedule:

- Working hours: 9 AM - 6 PM

- Unoccupied hours: 6 PM - 9 AM

III. Estimated Heat-Transfer Coefficients

Building Components:

- Walls: U-value = 0.6 W/m²·K

- Roof: U-value = 0.5 W/m²·K

- Floors: U-value = 0.8 W/m²·K

Windows:

- U-value = 1.8 W/m²·K

Doors:

- U-value = 2.0 W/m²·K

IV. Infiltration Requirements

Infiltration Rate:

- Estimate using the ACH method or crack method.

V. Ventilation Requirements

CFM Values:

- Offices: 5 CFM per person

- Laboratories: 8 CFM per person

- Lecture rooms: 10 CFM per person

VI. Selection of Parameters of Air-Conditioning System

System Components:

- Airflow control type: Variable Air Volume (VAV)

- Ventilation sizing method: ASHRAE Standard 62.1

- Damper leak rate: 5%

- Supply temperature: 12°C

- Coil bypass factor: 0.1

- Supply fan type: Centrifugal

- Fan configuration: Direct drive

- Fan full load performance: 70% efficiency

- Duct system type: Low-pressure

Zone Components:

- Diversity factor: 0.9

- Thermostat schedule: Occupied and unoccupied settings

- Terminal type: VAV boxes with reheat coils

- Minimum airflow: 0.3 CFM per ft²

Sizing Data:

- Safety factors: 10%

VII. Estimation of Cooling Load

Cooling Load Calculation:

- Use HAP to simulate and report the cooling load requirements for each zone.

VIII. Energy Requirements and Annual Operational Cost

Energy Simulation:

- Simulate using HAP.

- Report overall energy requirements and annual operational costs.

IX. Cost Saving Solution

Proposed Modifications:

- Implement energy-efficient components or strategies.

- Simulate modified system and report results.
