many famous stories follow the same pattern: the Hero’s
Journey. They will first discuss some beloved book and film
heroes, then watch the video and do some comprehension
tasks on it. They will also study different types of prefixes,
discuss their impressions of the video, and apply the theory
to other stories, as well as to their own lives.

grammar skills by providing opportunities to practise

Fixing conflict at work


Proficiency (C2)

This video lesson is about conflict at work. An expert in the


topic talks about what creates it in the first place and
suggests five steps to deal with it. First, students will see
some words that feature in the video and discuss how they
relate to the topic of conflict. They then watch the video and
do some comprehension and vocabulary tasks. They then
read a short text on the topic with further vocabulary.
Finally, they relate the content of the video to their
experience.

This breaking news lesson is based on the successful rescue


of 41 construction workers from a collapsed tunnel in
northern India. Students will watch a news report in which
the dramatic rescue is explained, followed by a
comprehension activity to check their understanding of the
details. This is followed by a short grammar section on plural
nouns that can be both countable and uncountable. Then,
students will look at an article that explores the background
of the tunnel collapse, and finally, there is a crossword
exercise to finish.

Volcano in Iceland causes problems


Mixed levels

In this lesson, we look at the volcano crisis in Iceland. After


thousands of earthquakes, cities have been evacuated, and
roads are cracked, but still, no one knows when and how the
eruption will happen. Students first see some vocabulary on
the topic, then listen to a news report about the situation in
Iceland and do some comprehension tasks. They then read
an article with fun facts about volcanoes, and complete a
vocabulary task on the text. They finish by talking about the
topic.

The world’s first eyeball transplant


Mixed levels

This lesson looks at the development of a patient in the US


receiving an eye transplant following a serious accident and
the topic of organ donation. Students will watch a news
report on the eye transplant and read an article regarding
how organs are allocated in the UK and US and the potential
issues surrounding this. Exercises focus on related
vocabulary, reading and listening skills and offer students an
opportunity to discuss questions on the topic.

Australia opens the door for Tuvaluan refugees


Mixed levels

In this Breaking News worksheet, students will look at the


news of an agreement between two countries that involves
replacing climate refugees. They will first look at the
meaning of refugee and what might cause people to be
displaced. They then listen to a news report of the
agreement between Australia and Tuvalu and do some
vocabulary and comprehension tasks. They move on to
reading an article about climate refugees and end by
discussing questions on the topic.

B2 First

This lesson helps students preparing for the B2 First exam


to recognise and employ a range of reading strategies
including prediction, skimming, sampling, scanning and
intensive and extensive reading. These skills will support
them in tackling the reading papers on the exam, as well as
in planning and carrying out a personalised programme of
self-study to prepare for the exam more generally. Students
will work with two music-themed articles, read useful tips
and reflect on their experiences. There is also an optional
extension activity which introduces invites students to apply
some of the same strategies to listening texts.

The full lesson plan takes a minimum of 60 minutes.

This lesson introduces students to Reading - Part 1 in a


guided way, by explaining the skills needed to successfully
complete the task and introducing key vocabulary ahead of
the task. Students will have the opportunity to discuss

PET for Schools

This is the third lesson for Unit 3 of PET for Schools. The
general theme of Unit 3 is Around the world and this lesson
focuses on travel and holidays. Some vocabulary from Unit 2
Lesson 5 related to transport may be recycled here. The
lesson can be summarised in three parts. First learners are
introduced to holiday vocabulary centering on types of
holidays, locations, and activities. Then they look at
sequencers. The exam focus is on how to write a story with
follow up activities on past perfect and connectors for
contrast.

Pre-intermediate (A2-B1)

This lesson revises all the language seen in the first four
lessons of Unit 3 in terms of vocabulary (hospital
departments and healthcare professionals), grammar
(talking about the future) and functional language (for
instructions, job interviews and referral letters). In addition,
students will read a text about how to write a good referral
letter and write their own correspondence. Finally, they will
listen to three healthcare-related conversations in the
format of the OET (Occupational English Test), then
roleplay the dialogues and prepare their own.
