Background Information for Learners:

There are two classifications of matter:


Substance Substances are form of matter that has definite and unchanging chemical
compositions. Substances are further broken down into elements and compounds.
Properties of substance:
1. Has constant chemical composition and characteristic properties.
2. It cannot be separated into components without chemical bonds.
3. Substance can be solid, liquid, gas and plasma.
Changes in temperature or pressure can cause substances to shift between the
different phases of matter.
Mixture
A mixture is a material system made up of two or more different substances which
are mixed but not combined chemically. It is a physical combination of two or more
substances in which the identities of the individual substances are retained. Mixtures take
the form of alloys, solutions, suspensions and colloids. The amount of each substance in the
mixture is not fixed.
