Research Project Title: Understanding the leadership challenges of implementing and managing an adcvanced information system in an organisation: Case study
of Microsoft.

Research question(s), aim(s), objectives and/or hypotheses

In no more than 150 words specify the planned outcomes of your research. You may use questions, aims, objectives and hypotheses if you wish, but it is unlikely
that you will need to refer to all of these in a concise definition.
This research aims to investigate the leadership challenges of implementing and managing advanced information systems within Microsoft. It will provide
valuable insights into the best practices and strategies that can be applied in other organisations facing similar challenges.
1) To assess the effects of implementing advanced information systems on leadership practices within Microsoft.
2) To evaluate the specific challenges leaders face in managing these advanced information systems, including technological, organisational, and cultural
barriers.
3) To identify effective strategies and best practices used by leaders at Microsoft to overcome these challenges and ensure successful technology adoption and
integration.
3) To explore the impact of these leadership challenges on organisational performance and technological innovation within Microsoft.
One of the key outcomes of this research is the identification of effective strategies and best practices used by Microsoft’s leaders to overcome the identified
challenges. These insights will not only explain the unique approaches adopted by a leading technology company but also offer transferable lessons that can be
applied in other organisational contexts facing similar challenges. Additionally, the research will evaluate the impact of these leadership challenges on
organisational performance and technological innovation.

What data will be collected?

In no more than 50 words outline the data that will be collected (e.g. quantitative survey data from 300 UK cosmetics buyers, transcripts from ten 60-minute
interviews with UK business students etc.). If you are using secondary data, identify the dataset that you will be analysing, justify its relevance to your study and
give a brief evaluation of its validity and reliability. Please also note that, if you are collecting quantitative data via an online Questionniare, you must use
Qualtrics and share your project file with your mentor.

The research will collect qualitative data through transcripts from ten 30-minute interviews with leaders at Microsoft. Additionally, secondary data from
organisational databases, internal reports, industry publications, and case studies will be analysed. This combination ensures a comprehensive understanding of
leadership challenges in implementing advanced information systems. The secondary data is highly relevant as it provides contextual background and supports
1
triangulation of findings. These sources are credible, enhancing the validity and reliability of the study by offering well-documented and authoritative insights
into Microsoft's technology implementation practices.

How will your data be processed?

In no more than 50 words, explain how you will prepare the data for analysis. For interviews, this may involve processes such as transcribing audio recrodings of
interviews (or checking the accuracy of the Teams-generated transcript), anonymizing the transcript and uploading it to an analysis programme such as Nvivo.
For quantitative data this will involve processes such exporting data from Qualtrics to a statistical package such as SPSS or R, checking codings, deleting
incomplete responses and performing reliability analysis.

Interview recordings will be transcribed, anonymised, and manually coded to identify recurring themes and patterns related to leadership challenges. Secondary
data will be organised and similarly coded to ensure comprehensive analysis. This structured approach facilitates a thorough examination of qualitative data.
How will your data be analysed?
In no more than 150 words, explain how you anlayse the data. For qualitative data, you should identify the specific analytical method by which you generate
findings (e.g. thematic analysis, narrative analysis or framework analysis). For quantitative data, you should identify the statistical tests that you will apply. You
should show how this analysis relates to each of your research questions, objectives or hypotheses.

The data will be analysed using thematic analysis. Interview transcripts and secondary data will be systematically coded to identify recurring themes and
patterns related to leadership challenges in implementing and managing advanced information systems. This method involves:
1) Familiarisation: Reading and re-reading the data to immerse and understand the content.
2) Coding: Generating initial codes for significant features of the data relevant to the research questions.
3) Theme Development: Collating codes into potential themes that align with the research objectives.
4) Reviewing Themes: Refining themes to ensure they accurately reflect the data.
5) Defining Themes: Clearly defining and naming each theme.
This analysis will help achieve the research objectives by revealing the specific challenges leaders face, the strategies they employ, and the impact on
organizational performance, thereby providing practical insights into effective leadership in technology implementation.
What are the limitations of your data and its analysis?
In no more that 100 words, outline any limitations or shortcomings you can identify in your data or your analytical approach.

The primary limitation is the potential for bias in qualitative interviews, as responses may be influenced by personal perspectives. The sample size, limited to ten
interviews, may not fully capture the diversity of experiences within Microsoft. Additionally, the reliance on secondary data may result in outdated or
incomplete information. The thematic analysis approach, while systematic, is inherently subjective, and the interpretation of themes may vary. These limitations
could affect the generalisability of the findings, but triangulation with multiple data sources helps mitigate these issues.
