TRANSITING
TO PRIMARY 1

• A smooth transition
69
is made when your
child:
o feels safe and
comfortable in
their new
environment.
o is able to manage
the daily
challenges of
school life.
HOW CAN I PREPARE MY CHILD
FOR PRIMARY 1?
• Parents often feel that literacy and numeracy are the most important
foundations for primary school. However, studies have shown that
academic preparation alone does not guarantee a smooth transition
for children.
• Over-preparation in academic areas is at the expense of adequate
preparation in other areas such as socio-emotional learning and
motor skills.
• Research is also clear that socio-emotional competencies are
beneficial for better coping during transitions and for progressing
through school. (Margetts, 2014)
