As we live in an era where almost everyone uses internet, the usage of social
media platforms such as “X”, “Facebook” and "Instagram" is on the rise. Even
not using these apps became more unusual than using these apps. And with these
platforms we got the chance of following celebrities, politicians and influencers
almost everywhere and anytime we want. And of course the name is not the only
thing that is different among these platforms. One of the biggest difference
among these platforms is that the use of language. So lets look at a celebrity to
understand the difference better.
The person that I chose is " Sheeya Bin Abraham - Joseph" also known as "21
savage". He is a British rapper currently living in United States. He was born in
London and he began his recording career in 2013. After his first three
independent mixtapes, he gained popularity. As he is a rapper, he has a unique
way of using English.
Such as:
As we can see from this tweet, he has an ungrammatical language which also
does not have any punctuation. So this tweet is mostly incomprehensible for
ordinary people. But the reason why he uses such a language is that he wants to
create an impression of a "gangsta". Another reason for why he embraces “hip
hop”and "hood" culture is that he comes from hoods and gangs. Apart from his
language, there are some other factors can be seen such as: usage of n word and
slurs, As he has gang related activities, most of his tweets include threats and
hatred. He uses social media to publicly announce his bravery and to gain
popularity from people who like gangsta type events. And similarly, N
word, which is mostly used by black people, can be seen everywhere in his social
media accounts because he is also black and wants other black people's
sympathy.
As also seen in this tweet, we can see him using tweeter for addressing certain
people whom he has a beef with.
But when we look at Instagram, his language is mostly used for daily events
such as:
He posts some photos of him smiling and saying " 1 promise I don't have a lazy
eye my camera be wigging".
As we see he still uses an informal language but for daily experiences.
For example, he uses “be” instead of using the right form of it “is” and using
such hard to understand words like “wigging”. When we look at the meaning of
that word, we see that it actually means “scolding” but he uses that word in a
different meaning that we can only predict with the context of the photo.
He uses Instagram not only for daily events but also for public announcements
like his new albums and tours. Unlike tweeter, his language is slightly more
grammatical and purpose of the language is different.
21 savage's way of talking may be normal in his culture as most of his fans are
black people. But for other celebrities using a language that has slurs and is
informal would not be right. Everybody's way of using a language may differ
from one person to another and every celebrity should make wise decisions for
their careers, thus, they may choose to hire a publicist.
The line "ball should bounce the same for everyone" meaning that everyone
should be equal no matter what they look like or what they believe represents
equality. Nike tried to raise awareness about an ethical issue here, so it touches
the emotions of the audience who can sympathise with this line. So, pathos was
also used as a persuasion technique here.
Also throughout the advertisement there are a lot of people from different ethnic
groups and religions to make the advertisement more appealing and to make us
trust their sincerity. And this method is called ethos
Apart from these two methods, logos can also be seen in this advertisement, they
use this method by showing athletes drawing white lines with spray paints to
create a logical argument meaning that those boundaries that results in
inequality are created by us. And with this example they try to create a common
logic to help viewers to develop an awareness for this topic. So, we can say that
all the three methods are used in this advertisement.
And finally, Nike is not the only company that uses persuasion techniques.
These methods can be seen in almost every successful companies'
advertisements. They come up with brilliant ideas to catch viewers attention and
to make a place in their minds,And most of the income that these companies get
is the fruit of these advertisements,
The online article that I chose is titled as "Kendrick Lamar announces one-oft
concert at LA's Kia forum. Get tickets" and it was under the category of
entertainment on New York Post According to the Ballotpedia, the New York
Post was founded on November 16, 1801, by the first U.S. Secretary of the
Treasury Alexander Hamilton and a group of investors from the Federalist Party
(led by Hamilton at the time). The first editor was William Coleman, but a more
well-known editor was William Cullen Bryant, an abolitionist and poet. It has
been a reliable and relevant news source since 1801 and it still is.. As one can
infer from the title, this article mainly focuses on Kendrick's concert at LA's Kia
forum. But when we start to read the article first information that we get is the
beef between Aubrey Graham also known as "Drake" and Kendrick Lamar.
Previously, Kendrick Lamar started a beef in his song "like that" and after a
while famous rapper Drake responded him with a diss track. Just by looking at
the start of the article me can see the difference between hard copy print and
online articles. As we all know hard copy prints mostly used for public
announcements and uses a formal language. So, In had copy prints there would
not be such an information as it is not related to ordinary folk. The topic that
online article talks about is an informal and non-governmental topic. Thus, this
topic is only related to the people who are following at least one of the
mentioned artists.
. And afterwards, article starts to give general information about the concert. At
one part of the article, they state that Kendrick's song "like that" is among the
sags that the billboard hot 100 chat topper. This also is an information that we
would not see on the hard copy print. Also, in the article there are hyperlinks
which are directly linked to other sites provided for the fans who want to buy the
tickets. The traditional print media me can ot access links directly and have no
opportunity like this. Apart from the hyper links, there are also visual materials
related to the beef between the artists to support the idea of the article and enrich
the quality of the content.
And the topic chosen is not the only difference we can spot between hard copy
and online version. it is the language. in traditional print media we would not see
such a word as "beef" as it is an online source. We see that the language used is
mainly similar to the language used in the social media. And one of the main
reason for this is that the traditional print needs to produce red life material
whereas in the online articles, the news can be shared by just few clicks. So this
situation makes it easier for online print to share specific content that is related
to certain group of people
And last but not least, biggest factor in my opinion is recency. What I mean is
that me can get the access to online print wherever and whenever we went. With
the invention of internet, reaching to information became faster and easier than
ever before. So for this reason, traditional print media has no chance against
online media in terms of speed and accessibility. And in some cases, there is a
false information that first tought as correct and falsified afterwards. In these types
of events traditional media print can not do anything but to release a new version
of the previously falsified newspaper, this is a big money-wise problem for them
of course. But when me look at online media print, we see a faster and easier
solution: click some buttons. Itis much more easy right? At the end of the day,
online media is a faster, more recent and more topic related than traditional print
media.
Question 4 film and television script
The show that i chose is an anime named "Naruto" Naruto is A Japanese anime
written and illustrated by " mosashi kishmoto. " It tells the story of Naruto
Uzumaki, a young ninja who seeks recognition from his peers and dreams of
becoming the Hokage, the leader of his village. And Naruto is one of the biggest
three animes in the world alongside with "Bleach"and "One Piece"
And the scene that I am going to talk about is the speech of the main villain of
the show "madara uchiha". As Naruto’s universe includes superpowers, we can
see supernatural events in this show. And for you to understand the context,
Madara Uchiha is a very strong character with the capabilities of like throwing a
small meteor, breath fire, and many more catastrophic events. So a character like
him is a world level threat to Naruto’s universe. And Madara is a character who
was on the good side once and after some certain events he turns to the bad side.
The events that he goes through are really hard to overcome and this leaves him
no choice but turning to bad side. And at the scene we see Madara Uchiha really
old and at the brink of death. He gives a speech to a young ninja that he trains
“Obito Uchiha”. And that student is a ninja who has good dreams and goals like
living with his lover and become so strong that he can protect the people he
loves. But Madara had something else in his mind for him. He plans an evil
scenario which leads to the death of his student’s lover “Rin” before his eyes.
After that event, Obito rages so hard that he goes berserk and kills everyone that
caused her lovers death except Madara Uchiha. After his lover dies in his arms
he turns into an evil person and curses the world with his hatred. Little did he
know was the person behind all these things was Madara Uchiha. And then,
Madara tries to manipulate Obito to revive himself after his death. And gives a
really philosophic speech that represents his ideas about the world. And it goes
like this;
“Wake up to reality. Nothing ever goes as planned in this accursed world. The
longer you live the more you will realize that the only things that truly exist in
this reality are merely pain, suffering and futility. Listen… everywhere you look
in this world wherever there is light, there will always be shadows to be found as
well. As long as there is a concept of victors, the vanquished will also exist. The
selfish intent to preserve peace, initiates wars. And hatred is born in order to
protect love. There are nexuses, causal relationships that can not be separated. I
want to sever the fate of this world. A world of only victors, A world of only
peace, a world of only love… I will create such a world. So revive me after my
death and I will make this dream come true”
After this speech, Obito who can be considered as a second to Madara Uchiha,
uses all his might and power to revive Madara and after accomplishing it they
both start a war to the whole world. And that speech affects not only the
character development of Obito Uchiha but also affects the whole plot of the
Naruto by initiating a war and leading a lot of innocent people’s death. As we
can infer from Madara’s speech he has a negative thinking style about the world
but inside, he still has a good side that wants to create such a world. With this
character Naruto makes us think that “who is the villain here” because even the
villains want to make the world a better place. So how can we consider them as
villains if they are the product of our decisions.
