Mary and Joseph
Mary and Joseph
The Annunciation:
o Mary, a young Jewish woman from Nazareth, received a visit from the angel Gabriel
(Luke 1:26-38).
o Gabriel announced that she would conceive a child by the Holy Spirit and give birth to
the Son of God.
o Despite the social stigma and potential consequences, Mary responded with faith and
submission: “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).
Joseph’s Dilemma:
o Joseph, a righteous man and descendant of King David, was engaged to Mary.
o When he learned of Mary’s pregnancy, he initially planned to quietly break off the
engagement (Matthew 1:18-19).
o An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, explaining that Mary’s child was conceived by
the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20-21).
o Joseph obediently took Mary as his wife and became the earthly father of Jesus.
o Mary and Joseph traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem for the Roman census (Luke 2:1-
5).
o Despite Mary’s advanced pregnancy, they made the arduous journey, fulfilling the
prophecy that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).
o Arriving in Bethlehem, Mary and Joseph found no room in the inn. Jesus was born in a
stable and laid in a manger (Luke 2:6-7).
o The King of kings entered the world in the most humble circumstances.
5. The Flight to Egypt and Return
o After Jesus’ birth, an angel warned Joseph in a dream that King Herod sought to kill the
child (Matthew 2:13).
o After Herod’s death, Joseph received another dream instructing him to return to Israel
(Matthew 2:19-23).
Mary and Joseph exemplify faith, obedience, and trust in God’s plan. Their willingness to play their
unique roles in the birth of Jesus is a testament to God’s providence and love.
