Mary and Joseph: The Faithful Couple

1. Mary’s Role in the Story

 The Annunciation:

o Mary, a young Jewish woman from Nazareth, received a visit from the angel Gabriel
(Luke 1:26-38).

o Gabriel announced that she would conceive a child by the Holy Spirit and give birth to
the Son of God.

 Mary’s Faith and Obedience:

o Despite the social stigma and potential consequences, Mary responded with faith and
submission: “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

o She willingly accepted her role as the mother of Jesus.

2. Joseph’s Role in the Story

 Joseph’s Dilemma:

o Joseph, a righteous man and descendant of King David, was engaged to Mary.

o When he learned of Mary’s pregnancy, he initially planned to quietly break off the
engagement (Matthew 1:18-19).

 The Angel’s Message to Joseph:

o An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, explaining that Mary’s child was conceived by
the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20-21).

o Joseph obediently took Mary as his wife and became the earthly father of Jesus.

3. The Journey to Bethlehem

 The Census and the Journey:

o Mary and Joseph traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem for the Roman census (Luke 2:1-
5).

o Despite Mary’s advanced pregnancy, they made the arduous journey, fulfilling the
prophecy that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).

4. The Birth of Jesus

 The Humble Setting:

o Arriving in Bethlehem, Mary and Joseph found no room in the inn. Jesus was born in a
stable and laid in a manger (Luke 2:6-7).

o The King of kings entered the world in the most humble circumstances.
5. The Flight to Egypt and Return

 The Threat from Herod:

o After Jesus’ birth, an angel warned Joseph in a dream that King Herod sought to kill the
child (Matthew 2:13).

o Joseph took Mary and Jesus to Egypt for safety.

 The Return to Nazareth:

o After Herod’s death, Joseph received another dream instructing him to return to Israel
(Matthew 2:19-23).

o The family settled in Nazareth, where Jesus grew up.

Mary and Joseph exemplify faith, obedience, and trust in God’s plan. Their willingness to play their
unique roles in the birth of Jesus is a testament to God’s providence and love.
